    Directional adposition use in English, Swedish and Finnish

    Directional adpositions such as to the left of describe where a Figure is in relation to a Ground. English and Swedish directional adpositions refer to the location of a Figure in relation to a Ground, whether both are static or in motion. In contrast, the Finnish directional adpositions edellä (in front of) and jäljessä (behind) solely describe the location of a moving Figure in relation to a moving Ground (Nikanne, 2003). When using directional adpositions, a frame of reference must be assumed for interpreting the meaning of directional adpositions. For example, the meaning of to the left of in English can be based on a relative (speaker or listener based) reference frame or an intrinsic (object based) reference frame (Levinson, 1996). When a Figure and a Ground are both in motion, it is possible for a Figure to be described as being behind or in front of the Ground, even if neither have intrinsic features. As shown by Walker (in preparation), there are good reasons to assume that in the latter case a motion based reference frame is involved. This means that if Finnish speakers would use edellä (in front of) and jäljessä (behind) more frequently in situations where both the Figure and Ground are in motion, a difference in reference frame use between Finnish on one hand and English and Swedish on the other could be expected. We asked native English, Swedish and Finnish speakers’ to select adpositions from a language specific list to describe the location of a Figure relative to a Ground when both were shown to be moving on a computer screen. We were interested in any differences between Finnish, English and Swedish speakers. All languages showed a predominant use of directional spatial adpositions referring to the lexical concepts TO THE LEFT OF, TO THE RIGHT OF, ABOVE and BELOW. There were no differences between the languages in directional adpositions use or reference frame use, including reference frame use based on motion. We conclude that despite differences in the grammars of the languages involved, and potential differences in reference frame system use, the three languages investigated encode Figure location in relation to Ground location in a similar way when both are in motion.     Dating Victorians: an experimental approach to stylochronometry

    A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy ofthe University of LutonThe writing style of a number of authors writing in English was empirically investigated for the purpose of detecting stylistic patterns in relation to advancing age. The aim was to identify the type of stylistic markers among lexical, syntactical, phonemic, entropic, character-based, and content ones that would be most able to discriminate between early, middle, and late works of the selected authors, and the best classification or prediction algorithm most suited for this task. Two pilot studies were initially conducted. The first one concentrated on Christina Georgina Rossetti and Edgar Allan Poe from whom personal letters and poetry were selected as the genres of study, along with a limited selection of variables. Results suggested that authors and genre vary inconsistently. The second pilot study was based on Shakespeare's plays using a wider selection of variables to assess their discriminating power in relation to a past study. It was observed that the selected variables were of satisfactory predictive power, hence judged suitable for the task. Subsequently, four experiments were conducted using the variables tested in the second pilot study and personal correspondence and poetry from two additional authors, Edna St Vincent Millay and William Butler Yeats. Stepwise multiple linear regression and regression trees were selected to deal with the first two prediction experiments, and ordinal logistic regression and artificial neural networks for two classification experiments. The first experiment revealed inconsistency in accuracy of prediction and total number of variables in the final models affected by differences in authorship and genre. The second experiment revealed inconsistencies for the same factors in terms of accuracy only. The third experiment showed total number of variables in the model and error in the final model to be affected in various degrees by authorship, genre, different variable types and order in which the variables had been calculated. The last experiment had all measurements affected by the four factors. Examination of whether differences in method within each task play an important part revealed significant influences of method, authorship, and genre for the prediction problems, whereas all factors including method and various interactions dominated in the classification problems. Given the current data and methods used, as well as the results obtained, generalizable conclusions for the wider author population have been avoided

    Affordances and limitations of algorithmic criticism

    Humanities scholars currently have access to unprecedented quantities of machine-readable texts, and, at the same time, the tools and the methods with which we can analyse and visualise these texts are becoming more and more sophisticated. As has been shown in numerous studies, many of the new technical possibilities that emerge from fields such as text mining and natural language processing can have useful applications within literary research. Computational methods can help literary scholars to discover interesting trends and correlations within massive text collections, and they can enable a thoroughly systematic examination of the stylistic properties of literary works. While such computer-assisted forms of reading have proven invaluable for research in the field of literary history, relatively few studies have applied these technologies to expand or to transform the ways in which we can interpret literary texts. Based on a comparative analysis of digital scholarship and traditional scholarship, this thesis critically examines the possibilities and the limitations of a computer-based literary criticism. It argues that quantitative analyses of data about literary techniques can often reveal surprising qualities of works of literature, which can, in turn, lead to new interpretative readings

    A systematic review of trends and gaps in the production of scientific knowledge on the sociopolitical impacts of emojis in computer-mediated communication.

    This systematic literature review analyses trends in original research on emoji use in computer-mediated communications (CMC) published between 2011 to 2021. In total, 823 articles were identified that met the search criteria. The mixedmethod approach included qualitative coding of articles and frequency analysis by year, impact quartile, research topic and multidisciplinarity, as well as a cluster analysis to examine trends in sociopolitical research. The results show that Computer Science, Communications and Social Sciences disciplines accounted for largest proportion of original research on emojis and CMC in the time period analysed and that the degree of scientific impact increased significantly across the time series. In recent years, sociopolitical research has had higher than average growth and can be clustered into various groups based on two broad objects of study: “culture-identity” and “social exclusion”. The study also identified significant knowledge gaps, particularly in relation to emoji standardization and its sociopolitical implications. Overall, multidisciplinary approaches are epistemologically constrained, Spanish-language production is low, and there is an almost complete absence of context appropriate methodologies. The study concludes that there is a need to for more sociopolitical research on emoji use in CMC and multidisciplinary approaches, a shift away from the hegemony of Anglocentrism, and greater questioning of the structural influences of standardization process on questions of cultural, identity and social exclusion.post-print2114 K

Ein grundlegender Ausgangspunkt ist die Erkenntnis, dass die beiden Wissenssphären, die geistes- und die naturwissenschaftliche, häufig zur gleichen Zeit neue Untersuchungsmodelle entwickeln und damit auf komplexe wissenschaftliche und kulturelle Phänomene reagieren. Das Konzept des »Interfacing« impliziert eine integrierte Sicht neuer Wissensgebiete in neuen Kontexten. Nicht länger an der traditionellen Vorstellung von »Ursache und Wirkung« gebunden, impliziert der Isomorphismus Gleichzeitigkeit statt Konsequentialität. Nicht immer beeinflusst die eine Sphäre die andere; Isomorphismus impliziert gemeinsame Entdeckungen, durch die beide Bereichen zur gleichen Zeit neue investigative Modelle und Darstellungssysteme entwickeln. Dialog und gegenseitiges Verständnis zwischen den beiden sogenannten »zwei Kulturen« werden so stimuliert.     Corpus-Based Approaches to Figurative Language: Metaphor and Austerity

    Austerity is a by-product of the ongoing financial crisis. As Kitson et al (2001) explain, what was a \u201cNICE\u201d (\u2018non-inflationary consistent expansion\u2019) economy has turned \u201cVILE\u201d (\u2018volatile inflation, little expansion\u2019), and the economic and social fall-out is now becoming visible. Unemployment, redundancy, inflation, recession, insecurity, and poverty all loom, causing governments, businesses and individuals to reevaluate their priorities. A changing world changes attitudes, and the earliest manifestations of such change can often be found in figurative language. Political rhetoric attempts to sweeten the bitter pill that nations have no choice but to swallow; all are invited to share the pain, make sacrifices for the common good, and weather the storm. But more sinister undertones can also be perceived. In times of social and financial dire straits, scapegoats are sought and mercilessly pursued in the press. The elderly, unemployed, and disabled are under fire for \u201csponging off the state\u201d; and as jobs become scarcer and the tax bill rises, migrant populations and asylum seekers are viewed with increasing suspicion and resentment. Calls for a \u201cbig society\u201d fall on deaf ears. Society, it seems, is shrinking as self-preservation takes hold. Austerity is a timely area of study: although austerity measures have been implemented in the past, most of the contributions here address the current political and economic situation, which means that some of the studies reported are work in progress while others look at particular \u201cwindows\u201d of language output from the recent past. Whichever their focus, the papers presented here feature up-to-the-minute research into the metaphors being used to comment upon our current socioeconomic situation. The picture of austerity that emerges from these snapshots is a complex one, and one which is likely to be developed further and more widely in the coming future

    Pragmatics of Language Evolution

    The fact that “all languages evolve, as long as they exist” (Schleicher 1863: 18f) has been long known to linguists and does not surprise us anymore. The reasons why all language change constantly, however, is still not fully understood. What we know, however, is that language usage must be at the core of language evolution. It is the dynamics among speakers, who want to be understood and understand what others say, while at the same time trying to be efficient, convincing, or poetic when communicating with others. If the dynamics of language use are indeed one of the driving forces of language evolution, it is evident that the phenomena of language change need to be studied from the perspective of pragmatics. In times of constantly increasing amounts of digital language data, in various forms, ranging from wordlists via results of laboratory experiments to large historical corpora, it is clear that every attempt to understand the specific dynamics of language evolution must be carried out in an empirical framework. In the course, I will try to give a rather broad (but nevertheless eclectic) introduction into topics in historical linguistics in which pragmatics play a crucial role for the study of language change and its driving forces. In this context, we will look into empirical aspects of research on language evolution, empirical studies on sound change, and the pragmatics of language contact. In addition, we will also learn how language change can be modeled, and how we can study pragmatic phenomena themselves from an evolutionary perspective by investigating how speech acts and poetic traditions evolve

    A Neurocognitive Approach

    One of the most important hallmarks of human language is the use of symbolic signs in that words just “symbolically” represent the objects they refer to. That is, neither the written word ‘tree’ nor the spoken sequence of sounds /triː/ has any inherent similarity or analogy to a real tree. This is a core assumption of classic linguistics, which states that words are paired with objects, mental images, or concepts in an arbitrary fashion. Thus, the sound of a word per se has no inherent semantic content, nor does it play any contributing role in shaping the meaning of words. The goal of this dissertation is to contemplate, to rethink, and to examine the aforementioned statement, which has dominated language research throughout the last century. Indeed, there are a vast number of counterexamples showing how meaningful single phonemes, or their combination—as in nonwords—can be. Consider the standalone role of sound in poetry, or the use of single syllables or phonemes in various sacred rituals, or the prevalence of onomatopoetic words, i.e., words that sound similar to what they mean (e.g., click, zigzag), across all of the languages in the world, or the tendency of language users toward using harsh-sounding words as swear words, or cross-linguistic phenomena such as a preference to match the nonword BOUBA with a curvy round shape and KIKI with a spiky angular shape: These all constitute excellent examples that could potentially falsify the radical assumption of the sound of words being per se meaningless. The present dissertation now wants to shed new empirical light on this old debate, which dates back to Greek antiquity, yet faces a number of unanswered questions regarding the cognitive and neuropsychological mechanisms underlying the potential effect of sound on the processes of meaning making. More specifically, my focus is on the existence of sound-meaning relationships in the affective domain, termed affective iconicity, and on the investigation of different aspects of this phenomenon in both everyday language and poetry. By taking an interdisciplinary approach, the present work combines a variety of methods and techniques, such as behavioral and neuroimaging experiments, phonological and acoustic analysis of a large-scale lexicon, computational modelling, and corpus analysis, in order to provide comprehensive answers for this multi-faceted phenomenon. The theoretical part of the dissertation explores and integrates linguistic perspectives on the iconic mappings, explaining how a linguistic sign can acquire meaning based on similarities between its form and the object it refers to. A surprising neglect of the role of emotion in empirical models of language in general, and in previous investigations of iconicity in particular, is discussed. Specific hypotheses are formulated via the predictions made by the recently proposed Neurocognitive Poetics Model (NCPM), and through reviewing the previous works on the topic. Accordingly, three main questions are formulated that the present dissertation aims to address: i) Does the sound of words evoke affective responses observable at the behavioral and neural level? ii) Does the sound of words influence the processes of meaning making in the affective domain? iii) Does the sound of words in a poem contribute to its global affective meaning as perceived by readers? Six empirical studies attempt to address these questions which are subdivided into six more precise research questions. Results of the empirical part provide a comprehensive picture of the interplay between sound and meaning at different levels of processing (i.e., rating, semantic decision, and passive listening) for different presentation modalities (i.e., visual, and auditory) and for different textual levels (i.e., single word, and entire text). In short, results of Study 1 and Study 2 indicated a high similarity between the affective potential of the sound of words and other types of affective sounds (e.g., nonverbal emotional vocalization and affective prosody) at both the level of psychological perception (Study 1) and the level of neural correlates and substrates (Study 2). Furthermore, when giving their affective judgments (valence and arousal) about the meaning of words, participants, as shown in Study 1, were implicitly influenced by the sound of words even when words were presented visually and read silently. These results were extended in Study 3 in which iconic words, as operationalized by congruence between affective sound and affective meaning, were evaluated more quickly and more accurately than their non-iconic counterparts, suggesting that a similarity between the form and meaning of a word may help language users to more readily access its meaning through direct form-meaning mappings. Study 4 investigated the neural mechanisms underlying the facilitative effect observed in Study 3. Results showed an enhanced fMRI signal in the left amygdala, known for its role in multimodal emotion integration, for both a comparison between iconic and non-iconic words, as well as functional connectivity between two seed regions representing the sound (superior temporal gyrus) and meaning (inferior frontal gyrus) of words modulated by iconic condition. Lastly, results of Study 5 and Study 6 emphasize the role of foregrounded phonological units in the affective and aesthetic processes of literary reading. This clearly supports the initial hypotheses that iconicity is a feasible indicator of the affective qualities of a literary text as evoked by particular phonemic structures. The presented method for measuring the basic affective tone of the poems investigated could account for a considerable part of the variance in the ratings of their general affective meaning. In summary, this dissertation provides strong psychological and neuroimaging evidence for a device that has long been deployed in poetry and the arts, i.e., evoking affective (and aesthetic) responses by the use of certain words with specific sound patterns. The results were used to upgrade the standard models of visual word processing by conceiving corresponding modules responsible for the evaluation of affective sound and its interaction with the evaluation of the affective meaning of words. Lastly, at the more complex level of the whole text, the findings of this dissertation confirm the central assumption of the NCPM regarding the role of foregrounded elements in enhancing affective perception, although the Panksepp-Jakopson hypothesis might need to be extended to human-specific brain regions which originally evolved for other, more simple, tasks. Also, the literary model of reading may need to be updated by adding feedback loops from resulting reading behavior (e.g., fluent reading) to the perceived emotions (e.g., lust and play) based on the findings concerning the facilitative role of iconicity in language processing
