To Normalize, or Not to Normalize: The Impact of Normalization on Part-of-Speech Tagging
Does normalization help Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging accuracy on noisy,
non-canonical data? To the best of our knowledge, little is known on the actual
impact of normalization in a real-world scenario, where gold error detection is
not available. We investigate the effect of automatic normalization on POS
tagging of tweets. We also compare normalization to strategies that leverage
large amounts of unlabeled data kept in its raw form. Our results show that
normalization helps, but does not add consistently beyond just word embedding
layer initialization. The latter approach yields a tagging model that is
competitive with a Twitter state-of-the-art tagger.Comment: In WNUT 201
An improved neural network model for joint POS tagging and dependency parsing
We propose a novel neural network model for joint part-of-speech (POS)
tagging and dependency parsing. Our model extends the well-known BIST
graph-based dependency parser (Kiperwasser and Goldberg, 2016) by incorporating
a BiLSTM-based tagging component to produce automatically predicted POS tags
for the parser. On the benchmark English Penn treebank, our model obtains
strong UAS and LAS scores at 94.51% and 92.87%, respectively, producing 1.5+%
absolute improvements to the BIST graph-based parser, and also obtaining a
state-of-the-art POS tagging accuracy at 97.97%. Furthermore, experimental
results on parsing 61 "big" Universal Dependencies treebanks from raw texts
show that our model outperforms the baseline UDPipe (Straka and Strakov\'a,
2017) with 0.8% higher average POS tagging score and 3.6% higher average LAS
score. In addition, with our model, we also obtain state-of-the-art downstream
task scores for biomedical event extraction and opinion analysis applications.

Universal Dependencies Parsing for Colloquial Singaporean English
Singlish can be interesting to the ACL community both linguistically as a
major creole based on English, and computationally for information extraction
and sentiment analysis of regional social media. We investigate dependency
parsing of Singlish by constructing a dependency treebank under the Universal
Dependencies scheme, and then training a neural network model by integrating
English syntactic knowledge into a state-of-the-art parser trained on the
Singlish treebank. Results show that English knowledge can lead to 25% relative
error reduction, resulting in a parser of 84.47% accuracies. To the best of our
knowledge, we are the first to use neural stacking to improve cross-lingual
dependency parsing on low-resource languages. We make both our annotation and

When silver glitters more than gold: Bootstrapping an Italian part-of-speech tagger for Twitter
We bootstrap a state-of-the-art part-of-speech tagger to tag Italian Twitter
data, in the context of the Evalita 2016 PoSTWITA shared task. We show that
training the tagger on native Twitter data enriched with little amounts of
specifically selected gold data and additional silver-labelled data scraped
from Facebook, yields better results than using large amounts of manually

Cross-lingual Argumentation Mining: Machine Translation (and a bit of Projection) is All You Need!
Argumentation mining (AM) requires the identification of complex discourse
structures and has lately been applied with success monolingually. In this
work, we show that the existing resources are, however, not adequate for
assessing cross-lingual AM, due to their heterogeneity or lack of complexity.
We therefore create suitable parallel corpora by (human and machine)
translating a popular AM dataset consisting of persuasive student essays into
German, French, Spanish, and Chinese. We then compare (i) annotation projection
and (ii) bilingual word embeddings based direct transfer strategies for
cross-lingual AM, finding that the former performs considerably better and
almost eliminates the loss from cross-lingual transfer. Moreover, we find that
annotation projection works equally well when using either costly human or
cheap machine translations. Our code and data are available at

Sparse Coding of Neural Word Embeddings for Multilingual Sequence Labeling
In this paper we propose and carefully evaluate a sequence labeling framework
which solely utilizes sparse indicator features derived from dense distributed
word representations. The proposed model obtains (near) state-of-the art
performance for both part-of-speech tagging and named entity recognition for a
variety of languages. Our model relies only on a few thousand sparse
coding-derived features, without applying any modification of the word
representations employed for the different tasks. The proposed model has
favorable generalization properties as it retains over 89.8% of its average POS
tagging accuracy when trained at 1.2% of the total available training data,
i.e.~150 sentences per language
