    Bounded Languages Meet Cellular Automata with Sparse Communication

    Cellular automata are one-dimensional arrays of interconnected interacting finite automata. We investigate one of the weakest classes, the real-time one-way cellular automata, and impose an additional restriction on their inter-cell communication by bounding the number of allowed uses of the links between cells. Moreover, we consider the devices as acceptors for bounded languages in order to explore the borderline at which non-trivial decidability problems of cellular automata classes become decidable. It is shown that even devices with drastically reduced communication, that is, each two neighboring cells may communicate only constantly often, accept bounded languages that are not semilinear. If the number of communications is at least logarithmic in the length of the input, several problems are undecidable. The same result is obtained for classes where the total number of communications during a computation is linearly bounded

    Tropical Fourier-Motzkin elimination, with an application to real-time verification

    We introduce a generalization of tropical polyhedra able to express both strict and non-strict inequalities. Such inequalities are handled by means of a semiring of germs (encoding infinitesimal perturbations). We develop a tropical analogue of Fourier-Motzkin elimination from which we derive geometrical properties of these polyhedra. In particular, we show that they coincide with the tropically convex union of (non-necessarily closed) cells that are convex both classically and tropically. We also prove that the redundant inequalities produced when performing successive elimination steps can be dynamically deleted by reduction to mean payoff game problems. As a complement, we provide a coarser (polynomial time) deletion procedure which is enough to arrive at a simply exponential bound for the total execution time. These algorithms are illustrated by an application to real-time systems (reachability analysis of timed automata).Comment: 29 pages, 8 figure

    On the descriptional complexity of iterative arrays

    The descriptional complexity of iterative arrays (lAs) is studied. Iterative arrays are a parallel computational model with a sequential processing of the input. It is shown that lAs when compared to deterministic finite automata or pushdown automata may provide savings in size which are not bounded by any recursive function, so-called non-recursive trade-offs. Additional non-recursive trade-offs are proven to exist between lAs working in linear time and lAs working in real time. Furthermore, the descriptional complexity of lAs is compared with cellular automata (CAs) and non-recursive trade-offs are proven between two restricted classes. Finally, it is shown that many decidability questions for lAs are undecidable and not semidecidable

    Representing a P-complete problem by small trellis automata

    A restricted case of the Circuit Value Problem known as the Sequential NOR Circuit Value Problem was recently used to obtain very succinct examples of conjunctive grammars, Boolean grammars and language equations representing P-complete languages (Okhotin, http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-540-74593-8_23 "A simple P-complete problem and its representations by language equations", MCU 2007). In this paper, a new encoding of the same problem is proposed, and a trellis automaton (one-way real-time cellular automaton) with 11 states solving this problem is constructed

    The expressive power of the class Conj of conjunctive languages, i.e. languages generated by the conjunctive grammars of Okhotin, is largely unknown, while its restriction LinConj to linear conjunctive grammars equals the class of languages recognized by real-time one-dimensional one-way cellular automata. We prove two weakened versions of the open question Conj ?? RealTime1CA, where RealTime1CA is the class of languages recognized by real-time one-dimensional two-way cellular automata: 1) it is true for unary languages; 2) Conj ? RealTime2OCA, i.e. any conjunctive language is recognized by a real-time two-dimensional one-way cellular automaton. Interestingly, we express the rules of a conjunctive grammar in two Horn logics, which exactly characterize the complexity classes RealTime1CA and RealTime2OCA

    A Simulation of Oblivious Multi-Head One-Way Finite Automata by Real-Time Cellular Automata

    In this paper, we present the simulation of a simple, yet significantly powerful, sequential model by cellular automata. The simulated model is called oblivious multi-head one-way finite automata and is characterized by having its heads moving only forward, on a trajectory that only depends on the length of the input. While the original finite automaton works in linear time, its corresponding cellular automaton performs the same task in real time, that is, exactly the length of the input.     The Size of One-Way Cellular Automata

    International audienceWe investigate the descriptional complexity of basic operations on real-time one-way cellular automata with an unbounded as well well as a fixed number of cells. The size of the automata is measured by their number of states. Most of the bounds shown are tight in the order of magnitude, that is, the sizes resulting from the effective constructions given are optimal with respect to worst case complexity. Conversely, these bounds also show the maximal savings of size that can be achieved when a given minimal real-time OCA is decomposed into smaller ones with respect to a given operation. From this point of view the natural problem of whether a decomposition can algorithmically be solved is studied. It turns out that all decomposition problems considered are algorithmically unsolvable. Therefore, a very restricted cellular model is studied in the second part of the paper, namely, real-time one-way cellular automata with a fixed number of cells. These devices are known to capture the regular languages and, thus, all the problems being undecidable for general one-way cellular automata become decidable. It is shown that these decision problems are NLOGSPACE\textsf{NLOGSPACE}-complete and thus share the attractive computational complexity of deterministic finite automata. Furthermore, the state complexity of basic operations for these devices is studied and upper and lower bounds are given
