    Advances in DIY Health and Wellbeing

    The choice of consumer healthcare and wellbeing technologies has never been greater, and the introduction of consumer wearable technologies and inexpensive sensor kits means that developing bespoke personalized health devices is now possible. For example, there is a growing community making DIY diabetes technologies and the trend is spreading to other health areas where people want to design, customize, manufacture and disseminate their own DIY health and wellbeing technologies. Although the CHI community has started to investigate these trends, the pace that motivated open-source health 'makers' and 'hackers' are developing technologies means that there is a need to bring together researchers to discuss the HCI implications of this changing landscape

    Vibration Alert Bracelet for Notification of the Visually and Hearing Impaired

    This paper presents the prototype of an electronic vibration bracelet designed to help the visually and hearing impaired to receive and send emergency alerts. The bracelet has two basic functions. The first function is to receive a wireless signal and respond with a vibration to alert the user. The second function is implemented by pushing one button of the bracelet to send an emergency signal. We report testing on a prototype system formed by a mobile application and two bracelets. The bracelets and the application form a complete system intended to be used in retirement apartment communities. However, the system is flexible and could be expanded to add new features or to serve as a research platform for gait analysis and location services. The medical and professional potential of the proposed system is that it offers a simple, modular, and cost-effective alternative to all the existing medical devices with similar functionality currently on the market. The proposed system has an educational potential as well: it can be used as a starting point for capstone projects and demonstration purposes in schools to attract students to STEM disciplines

    Bibliometric analysis on Hand Gesture Controlled Robot

    This paper discusses about the survey and bibliometric analysis of hand gesture-controlled robot using Scopus database in analyzing the research by area, influential authors, countries, institutions, and funding agencies. The 293 documents are extracted from the year 2016 till 6th March 2021 from the database. Bibliometric analysis is the statistical analysis of the research published as articles, conference papers, and reviews, which helps in understanding the impact of publication in the research domain globally. The visualization analysis is done with open-source tools namely GPS Visualizer, Gephi, VOS viewer, and ScienceScape. The visualization aids in a quick and clear understanding of the different perspective as mentioned above in a particular research domain search

    DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A DATA COLLECTION SYSTEM WITH RASPBERRY PI FOR GREENHOUSE MONITORING

    The need to produce high quality vegetables or flowers throughout the whole year, led to the development of automated greenhouses. Automation systems contribute to achieve the optimal conditions indoor, enable to be monitored and controlled from distance. Measurements such as humidity and temperature are critical for plantation growth thus they need to be accurately monitored and controlled. The aim of the thesis is the design and implementation of a data collection system in a greenhouse using two most popular programmable boards, Raspberry Pi and Arduino Uno. The system collects data of the most essential parameters, as humidity and temperature, which contribute to the desired climate. To control temperature and humidity, a fully automated ventilation system maintains the greenhouse’s interior to optimal conditions. The humidity and temperature measurements are stored in a SQLite database, which is installed on the Raspberry PI.     Business IT strategy in action : case study of #PUPRU

    Predicted key business IT trends through to 2020 acknowledge there will be increased adoption of disruptive technologies that will impact within business contexts (Gartner (1), 2015). These include moves to small-screen marketing, rising value of big data intelligence and increased use of social systems. However, IT penetration and literacy gaps between advanced and emerging economies, as well as social and organisational issues associated with technological implementation of business strategy, provide challenges to adoption of these trends. Strategy As Practice (SAP) presents a potential solution. It is concerned with the practice of strategising, including both the formulation of strategy and implementation that delivers strategic renewal and change. Through the “doing of strategy”, organisations not only gain an insight into strategic management from a theoretical level, but also can focus on micro-level social activities, process and practices that characterise both organisational strategy and strategising. In this paper, the Pop-Up Research Unit (#PUPRU), a newly-established mobile research centre in the Salford Business School (SBS) will be discussed. It aims to adopt a SAP approach to inform business strategy. Three disruptive technologies - Beacon, Raspberry Pi and 3D printer - available as part of #PUPRU will be examined. Future experiments in various business scenarios and live projects evaluating how these digital disrupters can be employed will also be considered

    A smart home environment to support safety and risk monitoring for the elderly living independently

    The elderly prefer to live independently despite vulnerability to age-related challenges. Constant monitoring is required in cases where the elderly are living alone. The home environment can be a dangerous environment for the elderly living independently due to adverse events that can occur at any time. The potential risks for the elderly living independently can be categorised as injury in the home, home environmental risks and inactivity due to unconsciousness. The main research objective was to develop a Smart Home Environment (SHE) that can support risk and safety monitoring for the elderly living independently. An unobtrusive and low cost SHE solution that uses a Raspberry Pi 3 model B, a Microsoft Kinect Sensor and an Aeotec 4-in-1 Multisensor was implemented. The Aeotec Multisensor was used to measure temperature, motion, lighting, and humidity in the home. Data from the multisensor was collected using OpenHAB as the Smart Home Operating System. The information was processed using the Raspberry Pi 3 and push notifications were sent when risk situations were detected. An experimental evaluation was conducted to determine the accuracy with which the prototype SHE detected abnormal events. Evaluation scripts were each evaluated five times. The results show that the prototype has an average accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of 94%, 96.92% and 88.93% respectively. The sensitivity shows that the chance of the prototype missing a risk situation is 3.08%, and the specificity shows that the chance of incorrectly classifying a non-risk situation is 11.07%. The prototype does not require any interaction on the part of the elderly. Relatives and caregivers can remotely monitor the elderly person living independently via the mobile application or a web portal. The total cost of the equipment used was below R3000
