FIT for purpose – the new FLARE Index to Treaties

    Get PDF
The FLARE Index to Treaties which was launched in March 2009 on the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies web server, was conceived to fill a gap in the range of information finding tools available on the internet for the international lawyer. It is a fully searchable database indexing and listing over 1,500 of the most significant multilateral treaties concluded from 1856 onwards. This article describes the background to the development, the various ways in which the service can be used and technical issues in its construction and use.Preprint of an article by Dr Peter Clinch, Senior Subject Librarian for Law, Cardiff University, Wales, UK and Steven Whittle, Information Systems Manager, Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London published online by LLRX.co

    Handbook Supported Employment

    Get PDF
[Excerpt] Supported employment has brought about improvements in the quality of life of women and men with a disability by enabling them to become active participants in society. It has a positive impact on families – and on employers who benefit from the contribution which disabled people can make at work. The strength of supported employment is that it enables people with disabilities to enter the real world of work by focusing on individual abilities and by providing varying levels of individualized support, depending on needs. Support and advice is also provided to the employer

    Carbon supported CdSe nanocrystals

Insights to the mechanism of CdSe nanoparticle attachment to carbon nanotubes following the hot injection method are discussed. It was observed that the presence of water improves the nanotube coverage while Cl containing media are responsible for the shape transformation of the nanoparticles and further attachment to the carbon lattice. The experiments also show that the mechanism taking place involves the right balance of several factors, namely, low passivated nanoparticle surface, particles with well-defined crystallographic facets, and interaction with an organics-free sp2 carbon lattice. Furthermore, this procedure can be extended to cover graphene by quantum dots.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

Protocol parameter selection for fiber-supported IEEE 802.16m networks

    Get PDF
In this paper we investigate protocol issues that might arise due to the extra fiber propagation delay in fiber-fed IEEE 802.16m networks. Our study indicates that although the fiber delay might affect network performance, an informed choice of protocol parameters, such as the guard times and the ranging channel structure, can minimize the reduction in efficiency and allow for relaxation of some of the constraints imposed on the optical distribution network architecture

What constitutes 'peer support' within peer supported development?

    Get PDF
Purpose: Peer supported schemes are replacing traditional Peer Observation of Teaching (PoT) programmes within some Higher Education Institutions. Peer supported schemes, whilst similar in philosophy to PoT, enable academic and academic related staff to support each other in non-teaching related activities. The purpose of this paper is to explore, therefore, the role of peer support in comparison with that of coaching and mentoring to clearly differentiate the activity. Design/methodology/approach: In 2010, one UK HEI appointed two Academic Fellows to implement and embed a 'Peer supported Development Scheme' (PSDS) within the institution. Through analysing the implementation process and drawing on activity conducted under such a scheme, this article examines the notion of 'peer support' in comparison to mentoring and coaching. The purpose of this will enable Academic Fellows to be able to better advise 'Supporters' how to work with colleagues and engage in structured dialogue to improve teaching and learning practice. Findings: The findings highlight that Peer support schemes are tangentially different to mentoring and coaching, however some activity undertaken as part of our peer supported scheme was actually mentoring and coaching. Therefore clearer guidance needs to be given to colleagues in order to steer the process towards 'peer support'. Originality/value: The PSDS discussed within this paper is only one of a few established within the UK and therefore findings from such schemes and how they are established are still emerging and will benefit other HEIs moving from PoT towards peer supported development

Supported nickel nitride catalysts for the gas-phase hydrogenation of furfural

    Get PDF
A series of catalysts with different nickel loading (2.5-30 wt%) has been prepared by UGR. The preparation of Ni3N phase was ascertained via Powder X-rays diffraction together with cubic nickel . The elemental chemical analysis and XPS data confirm the presence of the nitride phase. Their catalytic performance points out that catalysts with loading of 5-10 wt% Ni exhibit a higher stability, maintaining furfural conversion values higher than 75% after 5 h of time-on-stream at 170ÂșC, and the main products detected were furfuryl alcohol (hydrogenation) and furan (decarbonylation). This would indicate that two types of active sites are present on the catalyst surface. It is noteworthy the high catalytic activity of this family of catalyst, since they exhibit a better performance than Cu-ZnO catalysts, but using a lower reaction temperature and H2/furfural molar ratio, as well as a higher furfural concentration and WHSV values. The experimental conditions have been optimized in order to achieve the maximum yield in the target product, but preserving a high activity and stability. The fresh and spent catalysts have been characterized in order to elucidate structure-activity-stability relationships.Universidad de MĂĄlaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional AndalucĂa Tec
