A semiotic analysis of the genetic information

Terms loaded with informational connotations are often employed to refer to genes and their dynamics. Indeed, genes are usually perceived by biologists as basically ‘the carriers of hereditary information.’ Nevertheless, a number of researchers consider such talk as inadequate and ‘just metaphorical,’ thus expressing a skepticism about the use of the term ‘information’ and its derivatives in biology as a natural science. First, because the meaning of that term in biology is not as precise as it is, for instance, in the mathematical theory of communication. Second, because it seems to refer to a purported semantic property of genes without theoretically clarifying if any genuinely intrinsic semantics is involved. Biosemiotics, a field that attempts to analyze biological systems as semiotic systems, makes it possible to advance in the understanding of the concept of information in biology. From the perspective of Peircean biosemiotics, we develop here an account of genes as signs, including a detailed analysis of two fundamental processes in the genetic information system (transcription and protein synthesis) that have not been made so far in this field of research. Furthermore, we propose here an account of information based on Peircean semiotics and apply it to our analysis of transcription and protein synthesis

Keywords: semiotics, sign, myth, novel cover, ‘Diary of a Wimpy Vampire:because the undead have feelings too'. Novel cover contains some signs in the form of verbal and visual to give a clear message about the content of the novel that can be analyzed with semiotics approach. This study applies semiotic study based on Peirce's typology of sign and Barthes' mythology. Based on those reasons, this study aims at analyzing: (1) the signs found in both the original cover and the Indonesian version of the first series novel cover of ‘Diary of a Wimpy Vampire: because the undead have feelings too' by Tim Collins, and (2) the myth built in the novel covers both the original cover and the Indonesian version of the first series novel cover. This study is classified into qualitative research since it is intended to analyze visual and text form. The type of the study is document analysis since it uses novel covers as the source of the data. The study reveals that the iconic signs are used more on the novel covers, both the original cover and Indonesian version than the symbolic and indexical signs. In the point of mythology, those two novel covers illustrate that the main vampire character in this novel is different from the vampire characters in the other vampire novels that are well known before. He has feelings like human being as he experiences love and sadness. The meanings of colors used in those two novel covers also support in building the meaning behind the signs appearing in the novel. It can be concluded that although there are many signs that are different in both covers, they still build the same myth that is even though the main character of this novel is a blood sucking and immortal, he still has the same feelings like human being in general. Moreover, the original cover also describes the content of the novel more implicitly than the Indonesian one.Through this research, the researcher gives several suggestions for the next researchers to be more sensitive in recognizing the signs as every sign should be described in detail including their meaning and functions. Moreover, they should be objective in defining and interpreting signs. In addition, the researcher also suggests the next researchers use the application of mythology or different semiotics theories in the other novel cover series of ‘Diary of a Wimpy Vampire' or other printed media such as album cover and magazine cover

Socio-cultural research of ethnic minorities, is a hermeneutical process involving simultaneously the analysis of discursive strategies available to communities (ethnic),and the meta-narrative material. The type of discourse research dominant in the community, produces changes in the social pragmatics of that community. Action research study presents the discursive strategy of socio-cultural action. It emphasizes on quality characteristics of the method, which can be interpreted as a semiotic analysis of communication practices in the community, with effects in changing behavior patterns. Community development resulting from changes to the rhetoric used by the community. Understood in the manner proposed by Gergen constructionism, community is the space where there is a process of constant renegotiation of the meaning of social reality. A specific way of social pragmatics which can be used in transforming the social rhetoric of ethnic and multi-ethnic communities is the appreciative inquiry, transformative method aimed at harnessing the resources within the community by exploring the discourse level of positive experiences.Cultural minorities, ethnic communities, socio-cultural action, con- structionism, social pragmatic, appreciative inquiry, social rhetoric, meta-naratives

Emotion resonance and divergence: a semiotic analysis of music and sound in 'The Lost Thing', an animated short film and 'Elizabeth' a film trailer

    Get PDF
Music and sound contributions of interpersonal meaning to film narratives may be different from or similar to meanings made by language and image, and dynamic interactions between several modalities may generate new story messages. Such interpretive potentials of music and voice sound in motion pictures are rarely considered in social semiotic investigations of intermodality. This paper therefore shares two semiotic studies of distinct and combined music, English speech and image systems in an animated short film and a promotional filmtrailer. The paper considers the impact of music and voice sound on interpretations of film narrative meanings. A music system relevant to the analysis of filmic emotion is proposed. Examples show how music and intonation contribute meaning to lexical, visual and gestural elements of the cinematic spaces. Also described are relations of divergence and resonance between emotion types in various couplings of music, intonation, words and images across story phases. The research is relevant to educational knowledge about sound, and semiotic studies of multimodality
