An Approach to Proper Name Tagging for German

This paper presents an incremental method for the tagging of proper names in German newspaper texts. The tagging is performed by the analysis of the syntactic and textual contexts of proper names together with a morphological analysis. The proper names selected by this process supply new contexts which can be used for finding new proper names, and so on. This procedure was applied to a small German corpus (50,000 words) and correctly disambiguated 65% of the capitalized words, which should improve when it is applied to a very large corpus.Comment: 6 pages, LaTeX, 2 uuencoded tar-compressed eps-figures added, EACL-SIGDAT 9

    Approximate proper name matching

    Get PDF
Approximate proper-name matching uses concepts of approximate string matching and applies them to special case of finding ‘close’ or ‘similar’ names, to an input name, from a large database of names. Such Proper-Name-Approximate matching finds applications in situations where a user is unsure of how a person’s name is spelled, such as in a telephone directory search system or a library search system where a user wishes to search books on an author’s name.In this report we examine this problem in two main aspects: How to organize data efficiently, so as to obtain relevant results quickly, and how to develop suitable search techniques which would rank results suitably. We suggest four new data organization techniques to replace the current standard technique, Soundex, and we suggest refinements to the currently available search techniques. We then assess the performance of the developed techniques and compare them against the currently available ones. We also show that the developed techniques provide us with better a result faster that is they take lesser time per query than the current methods. In the course of evaluation we also suggest a new assessment technique (weighted recall) which gives a better measurement of system performance than the standard assessment techniques

Functional brain asymmetry and the proper name

    Get PDF
There are several published works on the influence of long-term weak acoustic stimuli onto living organisms and their development. In this context, functional brain asymmetry (FBA) parameters were studied in correlation with the proper name. A. R. Luria sensorimotor tests (the dominant thumb when “locking” hands, the dominant eye, the dominant hand when crossing hands (the Napoleon’s pose), the dominant palm when applauding, the dominant ear) were used. With the data collected, we calculated relative difference in the numbers of the “right” and “left” in the group of certain name bearers for each test, %: thumb – (R-L)t, eye – (R-L)e, hand – (R-L)h, palm – (R-L)p, ear – (R-L)e, total for all tests – Σ(R-L), %. 1,136 men and 2,140 women born in 1920–1991 were examined. With the Fisher’s criterion, significant differences were detected in the bearers of various names, p≤0.05÷0.001, as well as the differences by 1–2 FBA parameters in the namesake persons belonging to different generations (born in 1971–1991 – “young” and born in 1920–1970 – “old”), p≤0.05÷0.001. The conclusion was that among the known functions of the proper name there is also an adaptive function

A Pragmatic View of Proper Name Reference

    Get PDF
I argue, in this thesis, that proper name reference is a wholly pragmatic phenomenon. The reference of a proper name is neither constitutive of, nor determined by, the semantic content of that name, but is determined, on an occasion of use, by pragmatic factors. The majority of views in the literature on proper name reference claim that reference is in some way determined by the semantics of the name, either because their reference simply constitutes their semantics (which generally requires a very fine-grained individuation of names), or because names have an indexical-like semantics that returns a referent given certain specific contextual parameters. I discuss and criticize these views in detail, arguing, essentially, in both cases, that there can be no determinate criteria for reference determination—a claim required by both types of semantic view. I also consider a less common view on proper name reference: that it is determined wholly by speakers’ intentions. I argue that the most plausible version of this view—a strong neo-Gricean position whereby all utterance content is determined by the communicative intentions of the speaker—is implausible in light of psychological data. In the positive part of my thesis, I develop a pragmatic view of proper name reference that is influenced primarily by the work of Charles Travis. I argue that the reference of proper names can only be satisfactorily accounted for by claiming that reference occurs not at the level of word meaning, but at the pragmatic level, on an occasion of utterance. I claim that the contextual mechanisms that determine the reference of a name on an occasion are the same kinds of thing that determine the truth-values of utterances according to Travis. Thus, names are, effectively, occasion sensitive in the way that Travis claims predicates and sentences (amongst other expressions) are. Finally, I discuss how further research might address how my pragmatic view of reference affects traditional issues in the literature on names, and the consequences of the view for the semantics of names

Proposal of interdisciplinary definition of proper name -TRAD

    Get PDF
This article makes a proposal of interdisciplinary definition of the concept of proper name based on Cognitive Onomastics (SJÖBLOM, 2010), Theory of Relevance (SPERBER &WILSON, 2001 [1995], (SEIDE & SCHULTZ, 2014), Neurolinguistics (VAN LANGENDONCK,2007) and the onomastic knowledge of the ideal speaker (SEIDE, 2021). In the first section of this article, the object of study of Onomastics and the characteristics of the onomastic subarea in which the research is included are described. In the second, considerations about proper name made by Sperber and Wilson (2001 [1995]) are integrated to the definition of proper names as a conceptual address. In the third section, the neurolinguistic discoveries and the description of the onomastic knowledge of the ideal speaker are presented and integrated and the proper name redefinition is described. In the fourth and final section of the article, some implications of this redefinition for onomastics studies are described.

Proper name as an object of semiotic research

    Get PDF
The present article is divided into two parts. Its theoretical introductory part takes under scrutiny how proper name has been previously dealt with in linguistics, philosophy and semiotics. The purpose of this short overview is to synthesise different approaches that could be productive in the semiotic analysis of naming practices. Author proposes that proper names should not be seen as a linguistic element or a type of (indexical) signs, but rather as a function that can be carried by different linguistic units. This approach allows us to develop a transdisciplinary basis for a wider understanding of naming as a sociocultural practice. The empirical part of the article uses one certain village in Estonia in Lääne-Virumaa district as an example to demonstrate how toponyms structure the social space, how they carry the memory and how naming practice highlights such changes in the semiotic behaviour of the social life that otherwise could have remained hidden

The article is devoted to the problem of application of the step-by-step translation of proper names. It is as well discussed the choice of methods forming Russian and Ukrainian correspondences while translating children literature from English. Two hundred and twelve proper names and their correspondences taken from “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone” by J.K. Rowling were analyzed. There can be defined thirteen steps of the translation strategy. They are: to define if a language unit is a proper name; to define the class to which it belongs; to define national, linguistic and other charactertistics of the proper name; to define its singleness or plurality; to define its traditional correspondences; to define the possibility to transfer a proper name in its original form into the target language; to choose the method of formal ssmslarity; to check the result offor euphony; to check the correspondence for being a part of the syntagmatic and paradigmatic system of the target language; to check variants of the proper name for being equal; to check the proper name for keeping its aspects in the target language; to define the inner form of the proper name and its relevance; to analyze translation for being equivalent to the original. The most productive methods of forming the correspondences are traditional correspondences, transcription, transliteration, the method of morphographical modification, transposition of the proper name from the target language, semantic explication, limitation of the variants of the proper name, calque, functional analog, name-for-name change and lost of the priper name significance. This study aims to describe the address form of the proper name spoken by Tetun Fehan community. The purpose of this study is to describe the address form of the proper name spoken by the Fehan community in Malacca Regency. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection techniques can be conducted through questionnaires, participant observations, interviews, and notes. The results of this study refer to the ervin trip theory as a benchmark for writing an address form of the proper name for the Fehan society which can be classified into four which include (1) Status consists of fehan proper name and proper name for parents, (2) Rank involves proper name of profession, (3) Identity Include the proper name of titel which includes the proper name of an education degree, and proper name of the indigenous title. (4) Generation level includes kinship terms, the proper name of Baptist, the proper name of the sequence of birth, and the proper name of hyponymy.  Using the form of the proper name by Fehan society of Tetun speakers always use address form of kinship term (Indonesian for formal speech forms dan Tetun for non-formal speech forms). Fehan people know the term hak’neter (Respect), hak ‘Taek (have good manners), and ha’folin (appreciate),  where the term became the signature of the Fehan society in communicating by considering the age of the speakers.
