    Foraging enrichment alleviates oral repetitive behaviors in captive red-tailed black cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus banksii)

    The relationship between inadequate foraging opportunities and the expression of oral repetitive behaviors has been well documented in many production animal species. However, this relationship has been less‐well examined in zoo‐housed animals, particularly avian species. The expression of oral repetitive behavior may embody a frustrated foraging response, and may therefore be alleviated with the provision of foraging enrichment. In this study, we examined the effect of different foraging‐based enrichment items on a group of captive red‐tailed black cockatoos who were previously observed performing oral repetitive behavior. A group of six cockatoos were presented with five foraging enrichment conditions (no enrichment (control), sliced cucumber, fresh grass, baffle cages, and millet discs). Baseline activity budgets were established over a 10‐day preintervention period and interventions were then presented systematically over a 25‐day experimental period. This study demonstrated that the provision of foraging interventions effectively increased the median percentage of time spent foraging compared to control conditions (range, 5.0–31.7% across interventions vs. 5.0% for control), with two of the interventions; grass and millet discs, significantly decreasing the expression of oral repetitive behaviors (control = 16.6 vs. 8.3% for both grass and millet discs). Finally, a rapid‐scoring method utilized by zookeepers during the study proved to be a useful proxy for the amount of time the cockatoos spent interacting with the foraging interventions and overall time spent foraging

    Nest -Building Behavior In House Mice (Mus Musculus), A Potential Model Of Obsessive -Compulsive Disorder In Humans

    Thesis (Ph.D.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2007OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) is a chronic and debilitating psychiatric condition characterized by intrusive and persistent thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that become ritualistic in an attempt to escape the obsessions. Currently there is a paucity of animal models with robust and spontaneous (non-drug or non-behaviorally induced) compulsive-like behaviors. This study is aimed at validating a novel robust and spontaneous genetic mouse model of OCD. The compulsive-like nest-building behavior in mice selected for high levels of nest-building behavior (BIG) has good face validity, with a behavioral phenotype that resembles hoarding behavior characteristic of OCD. In addition, male and female BIG mice displayed compulsivelike digging behavior relative to mice selected for low levels of nest-building behavior (SMALL), as assessed by the marble-burying test. Both chronic oral fluoxetine and clomipramine treatment reduced compulsive-like nest-building behavior in male BIG mice. Furthermore, chronic oral fluoxetine administration decreased nest-building behavior of BIG mice in a dose-dependent manner, while desipramine, an antidepressant not effective for treating OCD, did not significantly alter this behavior. The administration of fluoxetine did not cause a decrease in general locomotor behavior. These findings suggest that the nest-building phenotype has predictive validity. In addition, chronic oral fluoxetine treatment reduced compulsive-like digging behavior in male and female BIG mice as compared to SMALL mice. Gender effects were also found in treatment response. Clomipramine did not reduce nest-building in female BIG mice in a dose-dependent manner, which is consistent with previous studies. These data are in contrast to previous studies using BIG male mice which had a significant decrease in nest-building behavior with oral clomipramine. These results are consistent with studies on humans, which have found gender differences in the treatment effects of antidepressants. Additional construct validity is implicated by the results of targeted serotonergic lesions of the raphe nuclei in male BIG mice, which reduced repetitive nest-building behavior. More research is necessary to confirm the appropriateness of this model for human OCD; however, this model is promising based on the data that support good face, predictive and construct validity

    In a series of recent publications, orofacial researchers have debated the question of how ‘bruxism’ should be defined for the purposes of accurate diagnosis and reliable clinical research. Following the principles of realism-based ontology, we performed an analysis of the arguments involved. This revealed that the disagreements rested primarily on inconsistent use of terms, so that issues of ontology were thus obfuscated by shortfalls in terminology. In this paper, we demonstrate how bruxism terminology can be improved by paying attention to the relationships between (1) particulars and types, and (2) continuants and occurrents

    The emergence of language in infants is one of biggest achievements in their first two years of life. At the present, there is a great deal of information available regarding the precursors that influence the onset of language in both typically and atypically developing children. It is commonly acknowledged that achievements in cognitive development during these stages of life widely influence the emerging language system. However, one of the other precursors that require additional attention is motor development. The implications that this system has on future language development is something that needs further consideration in the study of both typically and atypically developing populations with deficits in these areas

    Evidence-Based Psychosocial Treatments for Pediatric Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior Disorders

    Habits, such as hair pulling and thumb sucking, have recently been grouped into a category of clinical conditions called body-focused repetitive behavior disorders (BFRBDs). These behaviors are common in children and, at extreme levels, can cause physical and psychological damage. This article reviews the evidence base for psychosocial treatment of pediatric BFRBDs. A review of academic databases and published reviews revealed 60 studies on psychosocial treatments for pediatric BFRBDs, 23 of which were deemed suitable for review. Based on stringent methodological and evidence base criteria, we provided recommendations for each specific BFRBD. Individual behavior therapy proved probably efficacious for thumb sucking, possibly efficacious for several conditions, and experimental for nail biting. Individual and multicomponent cognitive-behavioral therapy was named experimental for trichotillomania and nail biting, respectively. No treatment met criteria for well-established status in the treatment of any BFRBD. Recommendations for clinicians are discussed. Reasons for the limitations of existing research in children and adolescents are explored. Several recommendations are presented for future pediatric treatment research on BFRBDs

    Language as a means of communication plays very important role in social relationship among human beings. The English language is the first foreign language we teach to children at very early stages of schooling. The primary aim of teaching English in the early years of schooling is to motivate young learners to be ready and have self-confident in learning English at higher levels of education. Some children are born to parents who are polyglots, so they have to acquire two or three different languages. Some others learn second or third language because they have to immigrate to a new country. Others learn English as foreign language because English is not their native language in their country. Teaching English to young learners then can be beneficial or detrimental to learners. It will be beneficial if the teachers can facilitate learning and enable learners to bring to language learning their curiosity and eagerness to make sense of the world, as a result, the teachers may help the learners are able to overcome their problem even the most demanding tasks with enthusiasm and willingness

    Common Dermatoses in Patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorders

    Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a chronic, debilitating syndrome, consisting of intrusive thoughts- which are experienced as inappropriate by the patient and are producing anxiety- and compulsions, defined as repetitive behaviours produced to reduce anxiety. While patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder typically have xerosis, eczema or lichen simplex chronicus, as a result of frequent washing or rubbing their skin, several other disorders which are included in the group of factitious disorders have also been associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder. A close collaboration between the dermatologist and the psychiatrist is therefore mandatory in order to achieve favourable outcomes for these patients. The aim of the article is to present the most frequent dermatological disorders associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder and to look over some of the rare ones
