A Novel Device-to-Device Discovery Scheme for Underlay Cellular Networks
Tremendous growing demand for high data rate services such as video, gaming
and social networking in wireless cellular systems, attracted researchers'
attention to focus on developing proximity services. In this regard,
device-to-device (D2D) communications as a promising technology for future
cellular systems, plays crucial rule. The key factor in D2D communication is
providing efficient peer discovery mechanisms in ultra dense networks. In this
paper, we propose a centralized D2D discovery scheme by employing a signaling
algorithm to exchange D2D discovery messages between network entities. In this
system, potential D2D pairs share uplink cellular users' resources with
collision detection, to initiate a D2D links. Stochastic geometry is used to
analyze system performance in terms of success probability of the transmitted
signal and minimum required time slots for the proposed discovery scheme.
Extensive simulations are used to evaluate the proposed system performance.Comment: Accepted for publication in 25'th Iranian Conference on Electrical

Graphene Gold Nanoparticle Hybrid Based Near Infrared Photodetector
This paper presents novel and simplistic approach towards the development of graphene based near infrared (NIR) photodetectors. The developed device comprises of Au nanoparticles integrated within the channel of the back-gated graphene field effect transistors. The introduction of Au nanoparticles enhanced response of the device under IR illumination due improved NIR absorption. Further, dynamic response of the device under IR illumination is presented. This study will trigger the development of novel hybrid graphene device for graphene based photodetectors in IR regime
Device-to-Device Communications in the Millimeter Wave Band: A Novel Distributed Mechanism
In spite of its potential advantages, the large-scale implementation of the
device-to-device (D2D) communications has yet to be realized, mainly due to
severe interference and lack of enough bandwidth in the microwave (W)
band. Recently, exploiting the millimeter wave (mmW) band for D2D
communications has attracted considerable attention as a potential solution to
these challenges. However, its severe sensitivity to blockage along with its
directional nature make the utilization of the mmW band a challenging task as
it requires line-of-sight (LOS) link detection and careful beam alignment
between the D2D transceivers. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed
mechanism which enables the D2D devices to discover unblocked LOS links for the
mmW band communication. Moreover, as such LOS links are not always available,
the proposed mechanism allows the D2D devices to switch to the W band if
necessary. In addition, the proposed mechanism detects the direction of the LOS
links to perform the beam alignment. We have used tools from stochastic
geometry to evaluate the performance of the proposed mechanism in terms of the
signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) coverage probability. The
performance of the proposed algorithm is then compared to the one of the single
band (i.e., W/mmW) communication. The simulation results show that the
proposed mechanism considerably outperforms the single band communication.Comment: 6 Pages, 6 Figures, Accepted for presentation in Wireless

Generation of ultrashort electrical pulses in semiconductor waveguides
We report a novel device capable of generating ultrashort electrical pulses on a coplanar waveguide (CPW) by means of optical rectification. The device consists of a completely passive GaAs-based optical waveguide, which is velocity matched to a CPW line. Optical pulses are injected into the device and electrical pulses are collected at the output. Experimental results obtained in the laboratory show the potential of this device for high speed optical-to-electrical conversion
Novel Device for Measuring Lung Function using Oscillometry
The forced oscillation technique (FOT) is a non-invasive means of measuring lung mechanics. Broad-band oscillations in flow are delivered to the lungs while the resultant pressure oscillations are recorded. These signals are processed to yield the input impedance of the respiratory system (Zrs), which encapsulates the mechanical properties of the lung over the frequency range spanned by the oscillations. Clinically, can be used to assess pulmonary pathologies such as asthma and COPD. Standard methods of performing FOT are limited to the non-ambulatory clinical setting. Production of a light-weight device that operates without an external power source would allow real-time measurements of in a wide variety of more natural settings. Breath-driven oscillators, such as the Smith’s Medical Acapella and D R Burton vPEP, are currently used clinically to help cystic fibrosis patients clear mucus from their lungs by generating pressure oscillations that travel into the airways. We hypothesized that these oscillations could be used to determine . We performed FOT on healthy individuals without history of lung disease using a calibrated piston oscillator (Flexivent) to determine reference between 1 and 20 Hz. We then measured airway pressure and flow using the same sensors but with the oscillations produced by the Acapella and vPEP during tidal breathing. Respiratory resistance (Rrs), elastance (Ers) and Inertance (Irs) were determined by fitting the single-compartment model of the respiratory system to the time-domain signals from all three measurement devices. Correlation coefficients, Bland-Altman plots, and coefficients of variation were used to compare the results obtained with the three devices. We found bias values of 0.633857 [0.214382378, 1.053331908] cmH2O.s.L-1, 0.041333 [-0.38432604, 0.46699271] cmH2O.s.L-1 for comparing the Flexivent against the Acapella and vPEP, respectively. Coefficients of variation of 9.003%, 9.855%, and 9.643% were obtained for the Flexivent, Acapella, and vPEP, respectively. These results demonstrate that breath-driven oscillators are promising alternatives to conventional powered oscillators for the measurement of
