Türkiye’s foreign policy in the Western Balkans: Where is Neo-Ottomanism today?
This paper analyses Türkiye’s foreign policy in the Western Balkans from the coming to power
of the Justice and Development Party until the present day. The author begins by providing insights into the key determinants that have shaped Türkiye’s foreign policy towards this region and identifying the most significant international, domestic and individual factors, as well as the historical determinants of its policy. Drawing from the concept of Neo-Ottomanism, the author scrutinises Türkiye’s actions in the diplomatic and economic spheres to address the question of whether and to what extent Türkiye has succeeded in realising its proclaimed goals in the Western Balkans. By showcasing and analysing the most crucial diplomatic initiatives of Türkiye, the author emphasised the limited achievements of Turkish mediation in resolving regional disputes. Furthermore, the paper assesses Turkish economic presence in the region and features key projects that involve Turkish companies. While the paper problematises the notion that Neo-Ottomanism can be equated entirely with Pan-Islamism, research findings confirm that Türkiye’s activities in the Western Balkans are significantly influenced by a religious matrix, primarily noticeable in the political domain, but partially in the economic sphere as well

Revisionism as a characteristic of authoritarian ex‑empires: a case study of Turkish neo‑Ottomanism (1990‑2020)
Revisionism is one of the main drivers of international conflict in the 21st century. Sensing the weakening of US global leadership, countries with regional or great power ambitions, especially former empires, increasingly resort to threats and the use of force to alter the status quo in their favour. In some cases, this involves military occupation, and even annexation of foreign territory. This article takes a closer look at neo‑Ottomanism, Turkey’s revisionist foreign policy, and its gradual transition from a soft‑power to a hard‑power approach, which eventually led to Ankara’s military incursion and occupation of parts of neighbouring Syria
Neoosmanizam versus panislamizam
Neo-Ottomanism is a phenomenon that becomes more and more interesting for the Politology of religion. Because of fact that Neo-Ottomanism is just a part of Pan-Islamism. And Pan-religious movements are important subject of the study of this science. Pan-Islamism tends to unite all Muslims into a single Islamic state, and Neo-Ottomanism is only one link in the chain of Pan-Islamism. Neo-Ottomanism tends to regain its influence over Muslims who were part of the Ottoman state .That's why Neo-Ottomanism only facilitates pan-Islamic goals.
Despite the great geopolitical importance of U.S.-Turkish bilateral relations and multilateral cooperation in which both countries participate, it is noticeable that only a small number of authors outside the United States and Turkey deal with this topic directly. As both countries are considered to be important players in the international arena, such small number of authors outside the bilateral circuit can be understood as illogical in academic terms. Especially if we take into account a large number of countries which, after the adoption of Davutogluʼs foreign policy doctrine, found themselves in a stronger international interaction with Turkey. Therefore, we consider that a selective review and critical analysis of scientific literature on modern U.S.-Turkish relations can provide the possibility of a deeper insight into the current Turkish foreign policy. In this paper author gives a critical review of thirty-five academic papers. In order to facilitate transparency and more complete analysis, the author suggests a classification of papers according to three criteria: the timeframe of the paper, the attitude of the author (towards the given problem), and theoretical approach of the author. The aim of this paper is to review the literature, and enable the reader to summarize certain conclusions which then can be used as guidelines for further research of U.S.-Turkish relations, and the Turkish foreign policy in general. Uprkos velikoj geopolitičkoj važnosti američko-turskih bilateralnih odnosa, kao i multilateralnih oblika saradnje u kojima obe zemlje učestvuju, mali broj autora izvan SAD-a i Turske direktno proučava ovu temu.
