Paid and unpaid graduate internships: prevalence, quality and motivations at six months after graduation
Secondary analysis of the UK’s 2011/12 Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey reveals that many existing assumptions about graduate internships are questionable. This article proposes a reliable way of estimating the true extent of internships including those reported as ‘voluntary’ jobs: hidden internships. In doing so the article finds: 1) At six months after graduation, internships are a small feature of the UK graduate labour market, but significant in certain sectors; 2) Unpaid internships are much more prevalent than previously estimated, especially in these same sectors; and 3) Contrary to some public policy debate, unpaid internships appear, on balance, to be a residual option more likely to lead to underemployment and less favourable career development outcomes. Post-graduation internships appear less likely than pre-graduation work experiences to confer long-term employability advantages
Internships in marketing: Goals, structures, and assessment--Student, company and academic perspectives
Work-integrated learning in the form of internships is increasingly important for universities as they seek to compete for students, and seek links with industries. Yet, there is surprisingly little empirical research on the details of internships: (1) What they should accomplish? How they should be structured? (3) How student performance should be assessed? There is also surprisingly little conceptual analysis of these key issues, either for business internships in general, or for marketing internships in particular. Furthermore, the “answers” on these issues may differ depending upon the perspective of the three stakeholders: students, business managers and university academics. There is no study in the marketing literature which surveys all three groups on these important aspects of internships. To fill these gaps, this paper discusses and analyses internship goals, internship structure, and internship assessment for undergraduate marketing internships, and then reports on a survey of the views of all three stakeholder groups on these issues. There are a considerable variety of approaches for internships, but generally there is consensus among the stakeholder groups, with some notable differences. Managerial implications include recognition of the importance of having an academic aspect in internships; mutual understanding concerning needs and constraints; and the requirement that companies, students, and academics take a long-term view of internship programs to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes

Enhancing Your Organization with Short-Term Staff [Slides]
After recent cutbacks in funding, many libraries now suffer permanent gaps in their staffing—gaps that have necessarily been filled by temporary staff and volunteers in order to complete essential work. Unfortunately, short-term staffing presents its own issues. But having temporary staff doesn't have to be problematic or frustrating. The Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) will present “Enhancing Your Organization with Short-Term Staff” on Wednesday, February 20 at 1:30-3:00 pm CT.This webinar will show how short-term workers can offer libraries much more than just a solution to being shorthanded. By expanding upon their recently book Short-Term Staff, Long Term Benefits, the presenters will address how library managers can work with a variety of short-term staffing arrangements like internships, grant personnel contracts and volunteers to create an organization that is continuously learning and growing. The webinar will include the description and recruitment of these positions and how to work with present staff members so that all employees can improve their skills. Academic, public and special collections will be addressed, as well as unique arrangements like virtual internships and working with doctoral students

Evaluating the Barriers to Completing a College Internship
Undergraduate student internships are an important aspect of the college experience for many students and are widely perceived to be formative co-curricular experiences that lead to improved long-term employment outcomes (Knouse, Tanner & Harris, 1999). Prior research suggests that internships have value for students, employers, and universities alike because they provide students opportunities for professional development, offer educators a setting to translate curriculum into real-world application, and supply employers with a low-cost option for trained talent (Brooks, et al., 1995; Burke & Carton, 2013; Maertz, Stoeberl & Marks, 2014). However, some question internship accessibility, especially with the rising trend of unpaid internships. This study explores the barriers for undergraduate students at East Carolina University to find, accept, and complete an internship. Surveys completed by current undergraduate students at ECU were analyzed to create profiles of internship participants versus nonparticipants and identify common barriers. This research will help inform university administrators and program leaders on how to address the needs of students entering the workforce
