The UK Research Data (Metadata) Registry pilot project is implementing a prototype registry for the UK's research data assets, enabling the holdings of subject-based data centres and institutional data repositories alike to be searched from a single location. The purpose of the prototype is to prove the concept of the registry and uncover challenges that will need to be addressed if and when the registry is developed into a sustainable service. The prototype is being tested using metadata records harvested from nine UK data centres and the data repositories of nine UK universities

Adults cycling on the footpath: what do the data show?

Recent increases in cycling have led to many media articles highlighting concerns about interactions between cyclists and pedestrians on footpaths and off-road paths. Under the Australian Road Rules, adults are not allowed to ride on footpaths unless accompanying a child 12 years of age or younger. However, this rule does not apply in Queensland. This paper reviews international studies that examine the safety of footpath cycling for both cyclists and pedestrians, and relevant Australian crash and injury data. The results of a survey of more than 2,500 Queensland adult cyclists are presented in terms of the frequency of footpath cycling, the characteristics of those cyclists and the characteristics of self-reported footpath crashes. A third of the respondents reported riding on the footpath and, of those, about two-thirds did so reluctantly. Riding on the footpath was more common for utilitarian trips and for new riders, although the average distance ridden on footpaths was greater for experienced riders. About 5% of distance ridden and a similar percentage of self-reported crashes occurred on footpaths. These data are discussed in terms of the Safe Systems principle of separating road users with vastly different levels of kinetic energy. The paper concludes that footpaths are important facilities for both inexperienced and experienced riders and for utilitarian riding, especially in locations riders consider do not provide a safe system for cycling

Show Me The Data: An Evaluation Of Data Access In The JRS Grant Portfolio

In order to be useful for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, biodiversity information must be not only available, but also accessible.The JRS Biodiversity Foundation contracted an independent study to assess the level to which data produced by JRS-funded projects were discoverable online, and the ease with which those data could be viewed or downloaded. Only about half of the expected data products were viewable or discoverable online, and in many cases data were not clearly connected with project results. Data accessibility was not dependent on the country in which the project was located, and hasn't changed over time. Interviews with grantees helped to identify challenges to and enabling conditions for creating sharable data products. JRS is actively responding to the findings of this study through new planning tools to support future grantees and a data sharing policy that explicitly supports open access to data and data publication to well-recognized and secure repositories
