Prolific Compositions
Under what circumstances might every extension of a combinatorial structure
contain more copies of another one than the original did? This property, which
we call prolificity, holds universally in some cases (e.g., finite linear
orders) and only trivially in others (e.g., permutations). Integer
compositions, or equivalently layered permutations, provide a middle ground. In
that setting, there are prolific compositions for a given pattern if and only
if that pattern begins and ends with 1. For each pattern, there is an easily
constructed automaton that recognises prolific compositions for that pattern.
Some instances where there is a unique minimal prolific composition for a

This text contains a short general description of my experience at the University of Birmingham. This is an attempt to communicate how my perception in composing music has changed and evolved. The focus is to introduce briefly my experience before I arrived at the University of Birmingham, then go through all the compositions I have worked on during my PhD programme. This attempt is to explain the main processes I have used for composing, giving a wider view of the issues that I was interested in developing. Furthermore, I will consider some technical aspects with reference to facilities that the University of Birmingham offers to students. This appears to be the right opportunity for them to explore technology almost without any restrictions. I also give some information about other nonmusical issues, which I was interested in developing in order to look into personal aesthetic directions.
My main reason for being at the University of Birmingham was to explore compositional processes different from my previous experiences, in order to enlarge my abilities and perspectives in music composition

Reliable scientific service compositions
Abstract. Distributed service oriented architectures (SOAs) are increas-ingly used by users, who are insufficiently skilled in the art of distributed system programming. A good example are computational scientists who build large-scale distributed systems using service-oriented Grid comput-ing infrastructures. Computational scientists use these infrastructure to build scientific applications, which are composed from basic Web ser-vices into larger orchestrations using workflow languages, such as the Business Process Execution Language. For these users reliability of the infrastructure is of significant importance and that has to be provided in the presence of hardware or operational failures. The primitives avail-able to achieve such reliability currently leave much to be desired by users who do not necessarily have a strong education in distributed sys-tem construction. We characterise scientific service compositions and the environment they operate in by introducing the notion of global scien-tific BPEL workflows. We outline the threats to the reliability of such workflows and discuss the limited support that available specifications and mechanisms provide to achieve reliability. Furthermore, we propose a line of research to address the identified issues by investigating auto-nomic mechanisms that assist computational scientists in building, exe-cuting and maintaining reliable workflows.
