Comparing Comets
This exercise allows students to compare and contrast the nucleus of two comets and listen to audio files of NASA scientists and middle-school students conducting the activity. The imagery and data are authentic and related to real-world science that is currently underway. By comparing their responses to those of NASA scientists, students realize that while their vocabulary may be different, their process parallels that of the scientists and the task of doing science is well within their reach. The teacher's guide is available here: http://epoxi.umd.edu/pdfs/Comparing_Comets_TG.pdf Audio files for the activity can be found here: http://epoxi.umd.edu/3gallery/aud_compcomets.shtml Educational levels: Middle school, Middle school, High school, High school
Comparing the Influence of the Drop Fill and Overflow Rinsing on the Reactive Dyeing Process in a Textile Dye House
Drop/fill rinsing method was used for reducing the high water consumption of overflow rinsing process in textile dye house. However, it is not known whether this drop/fill method has adverse effects on the final fabric properties or not. In this study, the effects of using drop/fill method instead of overflow rinsing process on colorimetric and fastness properties of 100% cotton towel fabrics are investigated. It is found that, skipping to the drop fill rinsing method from the over flow rinsing process and obtained fresh water saving has no negative effect on colorimetric and color fastness values of the processed fabric samples and can be used conveniently in the industrial sized production. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd
Comparing cohomology obstructions
We show that three different kinds of cohomology - Baues-Wirsching
cohomology, the (S,O)-cohomology of Dwyer-Kan, and the Andre-Quillen cohomology
of a Pi-algebra - are isomorphic, under certain assumptions.
This is then used to identify the cohomological obstructions in three general
approaches to realizability problems: the track category version of
Baues-Wirsching, the diagram rectifications of Dwyer-Kan-Smith, and the
Pi-Algebra realization of Dwyer-Kan-Stover. Our main tool in this
identification is the notion of a mapping algebra: a simplicially enriched
version of an algebra over a theory
Comparing Risks Thoughtfully
Dr. Finkel argues that comparing risks is neither impossible nor immoral - but is nonetheless very difficult. He then discusses two major pitfalls of making such comparisons, one commonly cited and one routinely ignored, before sketching a framework for improving them
Comparing Euler classes
We establish the equality of two definitions of an Euler class in algebraic
geometry: the first definition is as a "characteristic class" with values in
Chow-Witt theory, while the second definition is as an "obstruction class."
Along the way, we refine Morel's relative Hurewicz theorem in A^1-homotopy
theory, and show how to define (twisted) Chow-Witt groups for geometric
classifying spaces.Comment: 33 pages; Final version (before proofs). To appear Q. J. Mat
