Open Access Week Seeks to Address âTextbook Crisisâ

Queen Anne Commands: clothing the kettle drummer to the Ordnance 1706-1709
The account books of the Board of Ordnance in the National Archives list the provisions made to the Ordnance, including clothing, and offer a wonderful insight into uniform provided to the soldiers serving with this branch of the military at time of the War of the Spanish Succession. Through a series of accounts dating from 1706 to 1708 this paper demonstrates how one position under the control of the Board of Ordnance, that of the kettle drummer, was ostentatious in the extreme requiring ninety yards of gold lace. The article will relate his clothing to clothing provided to other soldiers, and show how his clothes reflected the high status of the kettle drummer

The Path to the Land Conservancy of Adams County
As part of this year\u27s observation of Land Conservancy Month, board member and retired Gettysburg College English Department chair Mary Margaret Stewart has prepared an annotated bibliography of readings on land preservation, land conservation, and land trusts. Beginning with Henry David Thoreau and John Muir and extending through the works of Wendell Berry and Annie Dillard and on to a survey of books discussing the philosophy behind the land trust movement, Mary Margaret\u27s bibliography is an outstanding resource for those who want to learn more about protecting our wild and undeveloped spaces
Determinants of Student Debt in New England
This paper examines the determinants of average student debt in New England based on financial, institutional and demographic variables. The dataset is derived from CollegeInsight and measures 15 variables across 71 institutions during the 2011-2014 academic school years. Between 2011 and 2014, average student debt increased 7%, tuition and room and board increased 10%, the percentage of Hispanic students increased 20% and the percentage of international students increased 26%. The estimated model, ln(AVDEBT) = 7.401 â 0.090ln(TUITION) â 0.042ln(BOOKS) + 0.433ln(ROOMBOARD) + 0.07ln(ENROLLMENT) â 0.200PUBLIC â 4.106ASIAN â 1.992AFAMERICAN + 0.254HISPANIC + 0.007WHITE + 0.641INTERNATIONAL â 0.676PERCENTFEDDEBT + 1.018PERCENTPELL, indicates that the primary determinants of average student debt in the region are: room and board costs, enrollment, public vs. private classification, the percentage of Asian, African American and international students, the percentage of student debt that comes from federal loans and the percentage of Pell Grant recipients. Other regions in the country could leverage a similar study to understand where the student debt burden is most likely coming from. The resulting information can stir policy discussions amongst institutions and governmental organizations to decrease the burden and ease the so-called student debt crisis
Administrasi Kelompok Tani di Kecamatan Tomohon Utara, Kota Tomohon
The study aims to determine the completeness of the administration of farmers\u27 groups in North Tomohon Sub-district, Tomohon City. The research was conducted from July to September 2016. The data were used primary data. Sampling method on three (3) groups of farmers in the district of North Tomohon is done by purposive sampling. The variables in this study are the characteristics of the board of farmer group organizations (Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer), characteristics of the farmer group (the name of the farmer groups, year of farmer groups established, and the number of members of farmer groups) and administrative group books. The administration books have two main parts: the books of administrative activities and the books of administration finance. The analysis used for variable administrative and financial administration which each answer is associated with a form of the statement expressed by the words that Good was given Score: 3, Less Good granted Score: 2 and No Good granted Score: 1. The results of this research farmer group that is located relatively far from BP3K Office have good administrative requirements compared to the farmer group that is located very close to BP3K Offuce. That\u27s because a group of farmers near BP3K office has motivation to get funding and the lack of cooperation among the board members in addition to the lack of visitation held by agriculutere extension staf, while the farmer groups that located far from BP3K Office has established with motivated to increase the welfare of members of farmers, the board members has good cooperation and good management. It is also the group always get the attention of the agriculutre extension staf by holding regular visitation to the farmer groups and therefore contributes positively to the administrative requirements for farmers\u27 group

Church and Ministry in the Lutheran Symbols: Serving the Gospel to the Priestly People
(Excerpt)
In a particularly eloquent passage in his Forum Letter of 30 May 1979 Richard John Neuhaus had the following to say in a story on the foibles of contemporary American Lutheranism: We are not dealing with an ideal church. We are dealing with a church so muddled and compromised that only a faithful Lord would dare to own up to it. That is such an apt statement, such an exquisitely Lutheran statement, that I promptly typed it on a file card and stuck it on a crowded little cork-board on my office wall above my typewriter. It stands, therefore, as a kind of benediction on my work as I compose this essay --and, more importantly, as a contemporary summary of a couple of the most essential motifs in the view of the church and, by implication, the ministry in the Lutheran symbolical books. The church confessed at Augsburg is a flawed church, a sinners\u27 church
Paper Gaming: Creating IoT Paper Interactions with Conductive Inks and Web-connectivity through EKKO
Paper is ubiquitous. It forms a substantial part of our everyday activities and interactions; ranging from our take-away coffee cups -- to wallpaper -- to rail tickets -- to board and card games. Imagine if you could connect paper to the Internet, interact and update it with additional data but without recourse to reprinting or using e-ink alternatives. This paper explores work examining conductive inks and web-connectivity of printed objects, which form part of an emergent sub-field within the Internet of Things (IoT) and paper. Our research is starting to explore a range of media uses, such as interactive newspapers, books, beer mats and now gaming environments through prototype IoT device named EKKO; a clip that allows conductive ink frameworks to detect human touch interaction revealing rich media content through a mobile application as the 'second screen'
Colouring the nation:A new in-depth study of the Turkey red pattern books in the National Museums of Scotland
The production of Turkey red dyed and printed cottons was a major industry in the west of Scotland, particularly in the mid- to late nineteenth century. Although the extensive works were pulled down in the second half of the twentieth century, our knowledge of this industry is significantly aided by the survival of approximately 200 pattern books, now housed in the National Museums Scotland. These pattern books, examined along with business papers, exhibition catalogues and the Board of Trade Design Registers, are the foundation for a new study into the wider Scottish decorative textile industry. The ongoing examination of these pattern books has shown the variety and longevity of Turkey red dyed and printed patterns, as well as providing insights into wider aspects of the textile industry, including issues of design, manufacture and trade
