Chinese drawing, architectural poetics : traditional painting as a semantic representation of modern architectural design
This thesis is partly an attempt to explore the potential of pre-modern Chinese painting, on its distinctive formats and schemes to achieve spatial depth and time duration, as a way to interpret and design architecture. By a survey on changing modes of Chinese traditional landscape and cityscape paintings in different scales, the poetic language of painting will be gradually explored. Beyond pictorial techniques, language is concerned with an ideological level of understanding and experience. Thus, it signposts a wider significance of architectural representation – as a verbal medium to express narrative and critic semantics besides visual effects.
In this thesis, we will also see how traditional painting remains a base in the ideating process of several contemporary Chinese architects, so to avoid a mere uncritical imitation of international models. A subtle fusion of contemporaneity with cultural identity afforded by the presence of taken concepts from traditional painting, allows this architecture to increase its meaning and dimension.
Lastly, understanding such processes of ideation can possibly provide us assistance in the intuitive formulation of ways to enrich Western architecture. Particularly, establishing poetic connections to our cultural traditions can be a useful strategy to prevent Western architecture's frequent falls into empty excesses of utilitarianism, iconicism or simple banality.
Postprint (published version
Learning Robust Object Recognition Using Composed Scenes from Generative Models
Recurrent feedback connections in the mammalian visual system have been
hypothesized to play a role in synthesizing input in the theoretical framework
of analysis by synthesis. The comparison of internally synthesized
representation with that of the input provides a validation mechanism during
perceptual inference and learning. Inspired by these ideas, we proposed that
the synthesis machinery can compose new, unobserved images by imagination to
train the network itself so as to increase the robustness of the system in
novel scenarios. As a proof of concept, we investigated whether images composed
by imagination could help an object recognition system to deal with occlusion,
which is challenging for the current state-of-the-art deep convolutional neural
networks. We fine-tuned a network on images containing objects in various
occlusion scenarios, that are imagined or self-generated through a deep
generator network. Trained on imagined occluded scenarios under the object
persistence constraint, our network discovered more subtle and localized image
features that were neglected by the original network for object classification,
obtaining better separability of different object classes in the feature space.
This leads to significant improvement of object recognition under occlusion for
our network relative to the original network trained only on un-occluded
images. In addition to providing practical benefits in object recognition under
occlusion, this work demonstrates the use of self-generated composition of
visual scenes through the synthesis loop, combined with the object persistence
constraint, can provide opportunities for neural networks to discover new
relevant patterns in the data, and become more flexible in dealing with novel
situations.Comment: Accepted by 14th Conference on Computer and Robot Visio
Molecular mechanisms of the sleep wake cycle : therapeutic applications to insomnia
The aim of this review is to explore the molecular mechanism and genetic components of the sleepwake cycle and insomnia. Moreover, we wanted to review the correlation between primary insomnia and its comorbidities. With this aim, a systematic review of recent evidence of the molecular and genetic mechanisms involved in the causation of primary insomnia, along with associations between primary insomnia and other diseases were conducted. Primary insomnia is a complex disorder which accounts for 25% of total chronic insomnia and has several effects other than on sleep. It is manifested by a variety of genetic, cultural, social, psychological and environmental factors. Chronic insomnia has been shown to be 24-hour hyperarousal with reduced relative metabolism in the prefrontal cortex while awake. Insomnia can cause various physiological effects and memory capacity alterations; with chronic activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis also leading to the development of depression and anxiety. Orexins and melatonin are important regulators of sleep and wakefulness. Detailed mechanisms of alterations to the neuroendocrine components highlight the therapeutic potential of orexin antagonists, as well as exogenous melatonin and melatonin receptor agonists. Genetics plays an important role in the development of insomnia, with several single nucleotide polymorphisms implicated in sleep regulation. Further research is crucial to aid understanding of this common disorder and enhance treatment options.peer-reviewe
Coarse Information Design
We study an information design problem with continuous state and discrete
signal space. We find that the designer's interim value function affects the
solution only through its curvature. There is a dual relation between the prior
distribution and the marginal value function. Under convex value functions, the
optimal information structure is interval-partitional. Moreover, in logconcave
environments, a center of scrutiny emerges and information becomes coarser for
states farther from it. We locate the scrutiny center and provide comparative
statics on information structure with respect to prior distributions and value
functions. The analysis can be extended to S-shaped value functions

The development of the sympathetic system of the heart
Development of the sympathetic nervous system begins at about embryonic day 9 in mice with the migration of the neural crest cells to the dorsal aorta and the development of neurons and the sympathetic ganglia. This is followed by the axonal elongation towards the developing cardiac tissue. This process is directed by a series of signal ligands including ephrin-B1, semaphorin 3a (Sema3a), F-Spondin, bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), Wnt-1 protein, neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), nerve growth factor (NGF) and artemin (ARTN). Once at the developing heart, the nerve fibres follow the coronary veins in the subepicardium using NGF and the chemorepellent Sema3a as signals. Here they interact with the cardiac conduction system. Although these cardiac neural cells are part of the autonomic system, they are developed later, mainly on the epicardial surface. Bilateral innervation of the heart comes from the middle cervical stellate (MC-S) ganglion. Although the left ventricle and atrium receive noradrenaline from the MC-S on both sides, the right ventricle receives more from the MC-S from the left rather than from the right side. The development of the great vessels also contributes towards the pattern of development of cardiac innervation. The afferent fibres leaving the heart are also described. Their development relates to the sympathetic innervation of the heart and therefore to cardiac sensations. We hypothesise about how this reflects on the patterns of ischaemic cardiac pain.peer-reviewe
Efficient inference for fully-connected CRFs with stationarity
The Conditional Random Field (CRF) is a popular tool for object-based image segmentation. CRFs used in prac-tice typically have edges only between adjacent image pix-els. To represent object relationship statistics beyond adja-cent pixels, prior work either represents only weak spatial information using the segmented regions, or encodes only global object co-occurrences. In this paper, we propose a unified model that augments the pixel-wise CRFs to cap-ture object spatial relationships. To this end, we use a fully connected CRF, which has an edge for each pair of pixels. The edge potentials are defined to capture the spatial in-formation and preserve the object boundaries at the same time. Traditional inference methods, such as belief propa-gation and graph cuts, are impractical in such a case where billions of edges are defined. Under only one assumption that the spatial relationships among different objects only depend on their relative positions (spatially stationary), we develop an efficient inference algorithm that converges in a few seconds on a standard resolution image, where belief propagation takes more than one hour for a single iteration. 1
Ranks of permutative matrices
A new type of matrix, termed permutative, is defined and motivated herein. The focus is upon identifying circumstances under which square permutative matrices are rank deficient. Two distinct ways, along with variants upon them are given. These are a special kind of grouping of rows and a type of partition in which the blocks are again permutative. Other, results are given, along with some questions and conjectures
