    Enhancement of two photon processes in quantum dots embedded in subwavelength metallic gratings

    We show a large enhancement of two-photon absorption processes in nanocrystal quantum dots and of light upconversion efficiency from the IR to the near-IR spectral regime, using a hybrid optical device in which near-IR emitting InAs quantum dots were embedded on top a metallic nanoslit array. The resonant enhancement of these nonlinear optical processes is due to the strong local electromagnetic field enhancements inside the nanoslit array structure at the extraordinary transmission resonances. A maximal two-photon absorption enhancement of more than 20 was inferred. Different high field regions were identified for different polarizations, which can be used for designing and optimizing efficient nonlinear processes in such hybrid structures. Combining nanocrystal quantum dots with subwavelength metallic nanostructures is therfore a promising way for a range of possible nonlinear optical devices.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

    Cautious explorers generate more future academic impact

    Some scientists are more likely to explore unfamiliar research topics while others tend to exploit existing ones. In previous work, correlations have been found between scientists' topic choices and their career performances. However, literature has yet to untangle the intricate interplay between scientific impact and research topic choices, where scientific exploration and exploitation intertwine. Here we study two metrics that gauge how frequently scientists switch topic areas and how large those jumps are, and discover that 'cautious explorers' who switch topics frequently but do so to 'close' domains have notably better future performance and can be identified at a remarkably early career stage. Cautious explorers who balance exploration and exploitation in their first four career years have up to 19% more citations per future paper. Our results suggest that the proposed metrics depict the scholarly traits of scientists throughout their careers and provide fresh insight, especially for nurturing junior scientists.Comment: 16 pages of main text and 94 pages of supplementary informatio

    Monitoring of deforestation events in the tropics using multidimensional features of Sentinel 1 radar data

    Many countries and regions are currently developing new forest strategies to better address the challenges facing forest ecosystems. Timely and accurate monitoring of deforestation events is necessary to guide tropical forest management activities. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is less susceptible to weather conditions and plays an important role in high-frequency monitoring in cloudy regions. Currently, most SAR image-based deforestation identification uses manually supervised methods, which rely on high quality and sufficient samples. In this study, we aim to explore radar features that are sensitive to deforestation, focusing on developing a method (named 3DC) to automatically extract deforestation events using radar multidimensional features. First, we analyzed the effectiveness of radar backscatter intensity (BI), vegetation index (VI), and polarization feature (PF) in distinguishing deforestation areas from the background environment. Second, we selected the best-performing radar features to construct a multidimensional feature space model and used an unsupervised K-mean clustering method to identify deforestation areas. Finally, qualitative and quantitative methods were used to validate the performance of the proposed method. The results in Paraguay, Brazil, and Mexico showed that (1) the overall accuracy (OA) and F1 score (F1) of 3DC were 88.1–98.3% and 90.2–98.5%, respectively. (2) 3DC achieved similar accuracy to supervised methods without the need for samples. (3) 3DC matched well with Global Forest Change (GFC) maps and provided more detailed spatial information. Furthermore, we applied the 3DC to deforestation mapping in Paraguay and found that deforestation events occurred mainly in the second half of the year. To conclude, 3DC is a simple and efficient method for monitoring tropical deforestation events, which is expected to serve the restoration of forests after deforestation. This study is also valuable for the development and implementation of forest management policies in the tropics

    Tumor regression rate, PD-L1 expression, pembrolizumab/nab-paclitaxel–based regimens, squamous cell carcinoma, and comorbidities were independently associated with efficacy of neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer

    BackgroundNeoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy (NCIO) is more effective than neoadjuvant immunotherapy alone for pathological response in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, but the processes for determining patient suitability for its implementation are not clear. We aimed to identify the most relevant factors and build a convenient model to select NSCLC patients who would benefit most from NCIO.Methods We retrospectively collected the clinical data of patients with locally advanced NSCLC who received NCIO followed by surgery at our institution between January 2019 and July 2022.ResultsA total of 101 eligible stage IIB-IIIC NSCLC patients were included. After NCIO, all patients successfully underwent surgical resection. A total of 46.53% (47/101) of patients achieved pathological complete response (pCR), and 70.30% (71/101) achieved major pathologic response (MPR). Tumor regression rate (adjusted odds ratio OR = 12.33), PD-L1 expression (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 9.66), pembrolizumab/nab-paclitaxel–based regimens (adjusted OR = 4.92), and comorbidities (adjusted OR = 0.16) were independently associated with pCR rate (all P < 0.05). Tumor regression rate (adjusted OR = 8.45), PD-L1 expression (adjusted OR = 5.35), and presence of squamous cell carcinoma (adjusted OR = 7.02) were independently associated with MPR rate (all P < 0.05). We established and validated an easy-to-use clinical model to predict pCR (with an area under the curve [AUC] of 0.848) and MPR (with an AUC of 0.847). Of note, the present study showed that CD4+ T-cell count/rate and total cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels in the peripheral blood of pre-NCIO patients were also significantly correlated with pathological response in univariate analyses.ConclusionsThe tumor regression rate, PD-L1 expression, pembrolizumab/nab-paclitaxel–based regimens, presence of squamous cell carcinoma, and comorbidities were the main influential factors for incidence of pCR/MPR in patients with stage IIB-IIIC NSCLC in the present study. Through predictive models, we can predict who will benefit most from NCIO prior to the emergence of clinical outcomes in locally advanced NSCLC

    Adjuvant Chemotherapy Versus Adjuvant Concurrent Chemoradiotherapy After Radical Surgery for Early-Stage Cervical Cancer: A Randomized, Non-Inferiority, Multicenter Trial

    We conducted a prospective study to assess the non-inferiority of adjuvant chemotherapy alone versus adjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) as an alternative strategy for patients with early-stage (FIGO 2009 stage IB-IIA) cervical cancer having risk factors after surgery. The condition was assessed in terms of prognosis, adverse effects, and quality of life. This randomized trial involved nine centers across China. Eligible patients were randomized to receive adjuvant chemotherapy or CCRT after surgery. The primary end-point was progression-free survival (PFS). From December 2012 to December 2014, 337 patients were subjected to randomization. Final analysis included 329 patients, including 165 in the adjuvant chemotherapy group and 164 in the adjuvant CCRT group. The median follow-up was 72.1 months. The three-year PFS rates were both 91.9%, and the five-year OS was 90.6% versus 90.0% in adjuvant chemotherapy and CCRT groups, respectively. No significant differences were observed in the PFS or OS between groups. The adjusted HR for PFS was 0.854 (95% confidence interval 0.415-1.757; P = 0.667) favoring adjuvant chemotherapy, excluding the predefined non-inferiority boundary of 1.9. The chemotherapy group showed a tendency toward good quality of life. In comparison with post-operative adjuvant CCRT, adjuvant chemotherapy treatment showed non-inferior efficacy in patients with early-stage cervical cancer having pathological risk factors. Adjuvant chemotherapy alone is a favorable alternative post-operative treatment

    ACE2 Alleviates Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and Protects against Pyroptosis by Regulating Ang1-7/Mas in Ventilator-Induced Lung Injury

    Background: Ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) is a consequence of inflammation and increased alveolar-capillary membrane permeability due to alveolar hyperdistention or elevated intrapulmonary pressure, but the precise mechanisms remain unclear. The aim of the study was to analyze the mechanism by which angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) alleviates endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) and protects alveolar cells from pyroptosis in VILI by regulating angiotensin (Ang)1-7/Mas. Methods: VILI was induced in mice by mechanical ventilation by regulating the tidal volume. The alveolar cell line, A549, mimics VILI in vitro by cyclic stretch (CS). Ang (1-7) (100 nmol/L) was added to the medium. ERS was induced in cells by stimulating with tunicamycin (TM, 2 μg/mL). ERS was inhibited by tracheal instillation of 4-phenylbutyric acid (4-PBA) (1 mg/kg). ACE2's enzymatic function was activated or inhibited by subcutaneous injection of resorcinolnaphthalein (RES, 20 μg/kg) or MLN-4760 (20 μg/kg). pGLV-EF1a-GFP-ACE2 was instilled into the trachea to increase the protein expression of ACE2. The Ang (1-7) receptor, Mas, was antagonized by injecting A779 subcutaneously (80 μg/kg). Results: ACE2 protein levels decreased after modeling. Ang (1-7) level was decreased and Ang II was accumulated. ERS was significantly induced in VILI mice, and pyroptosis was observed in cells. When ERS was inhibited, pyroptosis under the VILI condition was significantly inhibited. Ang (1-7) alleviated ERS and pyroptosis under CS. When ERS was continuously activated, the function of Ang (1-7) in inhibiting pyroptosis was blocked. Resorcinolnaphthalein (RES) effectively promoted Ang II conversion, alleviated the Ang (1-7) level in VILI, ameliorated lung injury, and inhibited ERS and cell pyroptosis. Inhibiting ACE2's function in VILI hindered the production of Ang (1-7), promoted the accumulation of Ang II, and exacerbated ERS and pyroptosis, along with lung injury. The Mas antagonist significantly blocked the inhibitory effects of ACE2 on ERS and pyroptosis in VILI. Conclusions: Reduced ACE2 expression in VILI is involved in ERS and pyroptosis-related injury. ACE2 can alleviate ERS in alveolar cells by catalyzing the production of Ang (1-7), thus inhibiting pyroptosis in VILI
