Studies on planktonic amphipods of the Indian Seas
An account of the past 50 years of research carried out on
Amphipoda by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute and
most relevant works carried out on the topic from the Indian seas
are presented. The paper highlights the qualitative and quantitative
composition, distribution in space and time and the taxonomy
of planktonic :imphipods of neritic and oceanic waters of Indian
region as well as from Antarctic waters. Considering the gap in the
work done, future research progranvnes are suggested with a view
to satisfy the present need
Studies on Ostracods of the Indian Seas
An account of the past five decades of research carried out
on ostracods by the staff of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute and most relevant works carried out by others on the topic
from the Indian seas are presented. This is a review of the major
work done especially the distribution and abundance in space and
time along with, descriptions of species in the inshore as well as in
the oceanic regions of the Indian sea
Distribution of Brachionus species (Phylum Rotifera) in Cochin backwaters, Kerala, India
Distribution of thirteen species of Brachionus in nine stations from Cochin backwaters was studied
during August 2000-July 2002. Of the 13 species, B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis were observed
in all the stations. B. rotundiformis was dominant with 85.76%. Detailed observations on the qualitative
and quantitative distribution are presented
Rhinopias eschmeyeri Cond├й, 1977 (Family Scorpaenidae) - a new record from Indian waters
The Eschmeyer's scorpionfish, Rhinopias eschmeyeri is reported for the first time from the Indian
waters. Two specimens of this species were collected from trawlers operated in Gulf of Mannar,
southeast coast of India, during November, 2009. Comparison of morphometric and other characters
with the holotype and other reported specimens confirm the identification
The rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis Tschungunoff isolated from Cochin backwater, Kerala.
The rotifer, Brachionus rotundformis along with a smaller strain were isolated for the first time from Cochin backwater. The newly isolated B, rotundformis has a length range of 98-210 microns showing a modal size of 168 microns, while in the smaller strain the length ranged from
70-168 microns with modal size at 140 microns. The lorica width to length ratio for B. rotundiformis is 0.7 and that for smaller strain 0.8. The smaller strains are of much use for feeding fish larvae especially those having small mouth size

Ecology of rotifers in Cochin backwaters, Kerala, India
Water and rotifer samples were analysed simultaneously from nine different habitats along Cochin backwaters during the
period from August 2000 to July 2002. The correlation coefficients were worked out between rotifers and thirteen environmental
characteristics with respect to each station separately as well as in the study area as a whole. Rotifers showed significant
positive correlations with nitrite, chlorophyll a, total suspended solids, phosphate and biochemical oxygen demand, in the
study area. Station-wise results on correlation along with the levels of significance are presented and discussed
New records of two finfish species from Indian waters
Two species of fishes, namely Ablabys binotatus
(Family Tetrarogidae) and Rhinopias eschmeyeri
(Family Scorpaenidae) were recorded in trawl (Roller
madi) landings from the Gulf of Mannar, south-east
of India, which are the first reports from India
