    Analysis of Gender Wage Differential in China's Urban Labor Market

    This paper estimates the gender wage gap and its composition in China's urban labor market using the 2009 survey data from the Chinese Family Panel Studies. Several estimation and decomposition methods have been used and compared. First, we examine the gender wage gap using ordinary least square regression method with a gender dummy variable. Then, we apply Oaxaca (1973) decomposition method with different weighting systems to analyze the logarithmic wage differential. To be more specific, we prove the existence of sample selection bias caused by the female's labor force participation. We eliminate it by using the Heckman's two-step procedure. Empirical results reveal that male workers generally receive a higher wage than female workers, and a great deal of this difference is unexplained. Meanwhile, this unexplained part, which is usually referred to as discrimination turns out to be higher when the adjustment is made for the selection bias. A further breakdown of the wage gap shows that among all the individual characteristics, occupations explain the largest share of the wage gap, followed by their working experience.     Development and Sources of Labor Productivity in Chinese Provinces

    As China exhibited unprecedented rapid economic growth ever since its reform and openness, the development and sources of labor productivity has gradually come to the forefront. This paper studies the development and the source of labor productivity in 31 Chinese provinces during the period of 2000-2009. The labor productivity is investigated through an examination at both the levels and the growth rate. Particularly, we first look at the production function relationship, to see the contribution of labor and other production factors to the gross domestic product. Then, a number of possible determinants are defined. They are regressed on the level and the growth rate of labor productivity to shed light on their relationships. Controlled for unobserved time-specific and province-specific effects, the fixed effects model with heteroskedasticity robust adjustments have been used for the estimation of three functions. Regional breakdown shows severe disparity in the economy where three municipal cities have the highest labor productivity among other regions. Subsequently, we summarize the different sources and their contributions to labor productivity and provide several policy suggestions.development, labor productivity, labor productivity growth, provinces, China

    A Mendelian randomization study reveals a causal association between NASH and the risk of atrial fibrillation

    BackgroundEpidemiological evidence suggests that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) may increase the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the findings are inconsistent, and the causality remains to be established.MethodsWe conducted two-step, two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to assess the association between genetically predicted NAFLD (i.e. chronically elevated serum alanine aminotransferase levels [cALT], imaging-based and biopsy-confirmed NAFLD) and AF. Subsequently, we further performed Mendelian randomization to investigate the causal relationship between non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a subtype of NAFLD, and AF. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the primary approach to reveal the potential causation between the exposure and outcome.ResultsThere was no significant causal association between NAFLD diagnosed based on cALT, confirmed by imaging, or verified by biopsy, and an increased risk of atrial fibrillation. Furthermore, the results of the IVW method revealed a positive causal effect of NASH on AF (OR=1.113, 95% CI=1.025-1.209, P = 0.011). In the reverse analysis, however, no evidence supported a significant genetic association between AF and NASH (OR=0.974, 95% CI=0.934-1.016, P = 0.214).ConclusionA causal relationship existed between NASH and the risk of AF. However, no significant genetic association has been observed between NAFLD and AF risk. This suggests that managing the progression of NAFLD may hold potential value in preventing the onset of AF

    Integrated Bioinformatic Analysis of a Competing Endogenous RNA Network Reveals a Prognostic Signature in Endometrial Cancer

    In endometrial carcinoma, the clinical outcome directly correlates with the TNM stage, but the lack of sufficient information prevents accurate prediction. The molecular mechanism underlying the competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) hypothesis has not been investigated in endometrial cancer. Multi-bioinformatic analyses, including differentially expressed gene analysis, ceRNA network construction, Cox regression analysis, function enrichment analysis, and protein-protein network analysis, were performed on the sequence data acquired from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data bank. A ceRNA network comprising 366 mRNAs, 27 microRNAs (miRNAs), and 66 long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) was established. Survival analysis performed with the univariate Cox regression analysis revealed nine lncRNAs with prognostic power in endometrial carcinoma. In multivariate Cox regression analysis, a signature comprising LINC00491, LINC00483, ADARB2-AS1, and C8orf49 showed remarkable prognostic power. Risk score and neoplasm status, but not TNM stage, were independent prognostic factors of endometrial carcinoma. A ceRNA network comprising differentially expressed mRNAs, miRNAs, and lncRNAs may reveal the molecular events involved in the progression of endometrial carcinoma. In addition, the signature with prognostic value may discriminate patients with increased risk for poor outcome, which may allow physicians to take accurate decisions
