Synchronization of Kuramoto Oscillators on Knots
A knot is a circle embedded in the space. Projecting a knot on a plane, we
obtain a diagram which is known as the knot diagram. The vertices of the
diagram, where the curved lines are crossed, can be considered as sites
occupied by oscillators. The synchronization of these oscillators can be
studied by means of a Kuramoto model. Here we propose to define some order
parameters, of the complete knot diagram and of its regions, to study the
synchronization of the system with regard to the different parts of it.Comment: Knots, Knot diagrams, Kuramoto model, (revised title
Discussion of the De Generatione Sonorum, a treatise on sound and phonetics by Robert Grosseteste
Here I am proposing a translation and discussion of the De Generatione Sonorum, one of the short scientific treatises written by Robert Grosseteste. The subject is the sound and the phonetics. In this treatise we find a discussion of oscillations and elasticity of materials and the description of some motions and their combinations to
Jerk and Hyperjerk in a Rotating Frame of Reference
Jerk is the derivative of acceleration with respect to time and then it is
the third order derivative of the position vector. Hyperjerks are the n-th
order derivatives with n>3. This paper describes the relations, for jerks and
hyperjerks, between the quantities measured in an inertial frame of reference
and those observed in a rotating frame. These relations can be interesting for
teaching purposes.Comment: Rotating frames, Physics education researc

Symbolic landforms created by ancient earthworks near Lake Titicaca
Interesting landforms created by an ancient network of earthworks are shown,
using Google satellite imagery enhanced by an image processing. This network
covers a large part of the land near the Titicaca Lake. Satellite images
clearly display the slopes of hills criss-crossed with terrace walls and the
surfaces of the plains covered with raised fields, indicating that this was
once a highly productive agricultural place for the south central Andes. Some
of the landforms are rather remarkable, having a clear symbolic function. Among
them, there are structures which seem to represent birds, where ponds are their
eyes.Comment: Keywords: Satellite maps, Landforms, Artificial landforms,

A software for aging faces applied to ancient marble busts
The study and development of software able to show the effect of aging of
faces is one of the tasks of face recognition technologies. Some software
solutions are used for investigations, some others to show the effects of drugs
on healthy appearance, however some other applications can be proposed for the
analysis of visual arts. Here we use a freely available software, which is
providing interesting results, for the comparison of ancient marble busts. An
analysis of Augustus busts is proposed.Comment: Image processing. Aging faces. Freely available software. Ancient
