Central Charge and the Andrews-Bailey Construction
From the equivalence of the bosonic and fermionic representations of
finitized characters in conformal field theory, one can extract mathematical
objects known as Bailey pairs. Recently Berkovich, McCoy and Schilling have
constructed a `generalized' character formula depending on two parameters \ra
and , using the Bailey pairs of the unitary model . By taking
appropriate limits of these parameters, they were able to obtain the characters
of model , model , and the unitary model with
central charge . In this letter we computed the effective
central charge associated with this `generalized' character formula using a
saddle point method. The result is a simple expression in dilogarithms which

Stratospheric CCN sampling program
Two one liter grab samples of stratospheric aerosol were returned from each of six U-2 sampling missions. Cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) spectra from each sample were obtained. Interest was centered on the effects of volcanic activity. Spurious particle generation was found to be a serious problem in container 9 LFT and a much smaller problem in container 9 RT. Initial studies of an option for improved sample containers and values were completed. A CCN spectrometer, able to operate at an internal pressure of 300 mb, was designed
Relative desirability of leisure activities and work parameters in a simulation of isolated work stations
The kinds of activities that are attractive to man in long duration isolation are delineated considering meaningful work as major activity and a choice of leisure/living provisions. The dependent variables are the relative distribution between various work, leisure, and living activities where external constraints on the subject's freedom of choice are minimized. Results indicate that an average of at least five hours per day of significant meaningful work is required for satisfactory enjoyment of the situation; most other parameters of the situation have less effects on overall performance and satisfactio
Stochastic oscillations of adaptive networks: application to epidemic modelling
Adaptive-network models are typically studied using deterministic
differential equations which approximately describe their dynamics. In
simulations, however, the discrete nature of the network gives rise to
intrinsic noise which can radically alter the system's behaviour. In this
article we develop a method to predict the effects of stochasticity in adaptive
networks by making use of a pair-based proxy model. The technique is developed
in the context of an epidemiological model of a disease spreading over an
adaptive network of infectious contact. Our analysis reveals that in this model
the structure of the network exhibits stochastic oscillations in response to
fluctuations in the disease dynamic.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Ignition of mixtures of SiH sub 4, CH sub 4, O sub 2, and Ar or N sub 2 behind reflected shock waves
Ignition delay times in mixtures of methane, silane, and oxygen diluted with argon and nitrogen were measured behind reflected shock waves generated in the chemical kinetic shock tube at Langley Research Center. The delay times were inferred from the rapid increase in pressure that occurs at ignition, and the ignition of methane was verified from the emission of infrared radiation from carbon dioxide. Pressures of 1.25 atm and temperatures from 1100 K to 1300 K were generated behind the reflected shocks; these levels are representative of those occurring within a supersonic Ramjet combustor. Expressions for the ignition delay time as a function of temperature were obtained from least squares curve fits to the data for overall equivalence ratios of 0.7 and 1.0. The ignition delay times with argon as the diluent were longer than those with nitrogen as the diluent. The infrared wavelength observations at 4.38 microns for carbon dioxide indicated that silane and methane ignited simultaneously (i.e., within the time resolution of the measurement). A combined chemical kinetic mechanism for mixtures of silane, methane, oxygen, and argon or nitrogen was assembled from one mechanism that accurately predicted the ignition of methane and a second mechanism that accurately predicted silane hydrogen ignition. Comparisons between this combined mechanism and experiment indicated that additional reactions, possibly between silyl and methyl fragments, are needed to develop a good silane methane mechanism
A dispersive wave pattern on Jupiter's fastest retrograde jet at S
A compact wave pattern has been identified on Jupiter's fastest retrograding
jet at 20S (the SEBs) on the southern edge of the South Equatorial Belt. The
wave has been identified in both reflected sunlight from amateur observations
between 2010 and 2015, thermal infrared imaging from the Very Large Telescope
and near infrared imaging from the Infrared Telescope Facility. The wave
pattern is present when the SEB is relatively quiescent and lacking large-scale
disturbances, and is particularly notable when the belt has undergone a fade
(whitening). It is generally not present when the SEB exhibits its usual
large-scale convective activity ('rifts'). Tracking of the wave pattern and
associated white ovals on its southern edge over several epochs have permitted
a measure of the dispersion relationship, showing a strong correlation between
the phase speed (-43.2 to -21.2 m/s) and the longitudinal wavelength, which
varied from 4.4-10.0 deg. longitude over the course of the observations.
Infrared imaging sensing low pressures in the upper troposphere suggest that
the wave is confined to near the cloud tops. The wave is moving westward at a
phase speed slower (i.e., less negative) than the peak retrograde wind speed
(-62 m/s), and is therefore moving east with respect to the SEBs jet peak.
Unlike the retrograde NEBn jet near 17N, which is a location of strong vertical
wind shear that sometimes hosts Rossby wave activity, the SEBs jet remains
retrograde throughout the upper troposphere, suggesting the SEBs pattern cannot
be interpreted as a classical Rossby wave. Cassini-derived windspeeds and
temperatures reveal that the vorticity gradient is dominated by the baroclinic
term and becomes negative (changes sign) in a region near the cloud-top level
(400-700 mbar) associated with the SEBs, suggesting a baroclinic origin for

Depth resolved grazing incidence scattering from the solid-liquid interface
We have applied small angle scattering in grazing incidence beam geometry on
a time-of-flight neutron instrument. Due to the broad wavelength distribution
provided for a specific incident beam angle the penetration depth of the
neutron beam is varied over a broad range in a single measurement. The near
surface structure of polymer micelles close to silicon substrates with distinct
surface energy is resolved. It is observed that the very near-surface structure
strongly depends on the surface coating whereas further away from the surface
bulk like ordering is found. A more pronounced ordering is found close to
surfaces with high surface energy
