How to create engaging training instances in reproducible way

Presented at the CRG in Barcelona,on November 21st 2013

Abstract
Informal learning instances are complementary to formal learning, which is restricted to degree-giving institutions. In the world of education, formal and informal instances can and should coexist. In the corporate world only informal learning exists. Training, the most common form of informal learning, should play a leading role in providing the connections. Concrete steps towards this can and should be given.
Training provision in Bioinformatics can develop into a medium/large scale operation through the use of a combination of techniques that make successful hands-on training courses available in a stable, reproducible way. Spicing them up with learner engaging trickery is what is needed to make them meet the objectives more effectively. This also involves putting some effort to make training effectiveness measurable. The methodology is ready for the next step which will consist or reproducing the GTPB training programme and embracing the growing need for Bioinformatics-capable biologists.
The methods used in GTPB can be ported to other areas of training, namely in wet labs. Ultimately, the underlying assumptions can be the same, and the methods used in training provision, design, recognition, etc. can converge.
