    Soft gluon resummation for squark and gluino pair-production at hadron colliders

    We report on the study of soft gluon effects in the production of squarks and gluinos at hadron colliders. Close to production threshold, the emission of soft gluon results in the appearence of large logarithmic corrections in the theoretical expressions. In order to resum these corrections at next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy appropriate one-loop anomalous dimensions have to be calculated.     Spontaneous superconducting islands and Hall voltage in clean superconductors

    We study a clean superconductor in the Hall configuration, in the framework of a purely dissipative time-dependent Ginzburg--Landau theory. We find situations in which the order parameter differs significantly from zero in a set of islands that appear to form a periodic structure. When the pattern of islands becomes irregular, it moves in or against the direction of the current and a Hall voltage is found. Tiny differences in the initial state may reverse the sign of the Hall voltage. When the average Hall voltage vanishes, the local Hall voltage does not necessarily vanish.     A novel accelerometry-based algorithm for the detection of step durations over short episodes of gait in healthy elderly.

    Background: The assessment of short episodes of gait is clinically relevant and easily implemented, especially given limited space and time requirements. BFS (body-fixed-sensors) are small, lightweight and easy to wear sensors, which allow the assessment of gait at relative low cost and with low interference. Thus, the assessment with BFS of short episodes of gait, extracted from dailylife physical activity or measured in a standardised and supervised setting, may add value in the study of gait quality of the elderly. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of a novel algorithm based on acceleration signals recorded at different human locations (lower back and heels) for the detection of step durations over short episodes of gait in healthy elderly subjects.Methods: Twenty healthy elderly subjects (73.7 ± 7.9 years old) walked twice a distance of 5 m, wearing a BFS on the lower back, and on the outside of each heel. Moreover, an optoelectronic three-dimensional (3D) motion tracking system was used to detect step durations. A novel algorithm is presented for the detection of step durations from low-back and heel acceleration signals separately. The accuracy of the algorithm was assessed by comparing absolute differences in step duration between the three methods: step detection from the optoelectronic 3D motion tracking system, step detection from the application of the novel algorithm to low-back accelerations, and step detection from the application of the novel algorithm to heel accelerations.Results: The proposed algorithm successfully detected all the steps, without false positives and without false negatives. Absolute average differences in step duration within trials and across subjects were calculated for each comparison, between low-back accelerations and the optoelectronic system were on average 22.4 ± 7.6 ms (4.0 ± 1.3 % of average step duration), between heel accelerations and the optoelectronic system were on average 20.7 ± 11.8 ms (3.7 ± 1.9 %), and between low-back accelerations and heel accelerations were on average 27.8 ± 15.1 ms (4.9 ± 2.5 % of average step duration).Conclusions: This study showed that the presented novel algorithm detects step durations over short episodes of gait in healthy elderly subjects with acceptable accuracy from low-back and heel accelerations, which provides opportunities to extract a range of gait parameters from short episodes of gait

    Thriving when exhausted: The role of perceived transformational leadership

    The role of leadership is especially important for employees’ personal growth at work. In the present two-wave study (time lag 3 months), we investigated the relationship between teachers’ perceptions of the transformational leadership style of their school principal and their thriving. Specifically, we examined the role of individuals’ energy resources (i.e., emotional exhaustion) in the relationships between perceived transformational leadership and thriving, as well as two aspects of work performance (task mastery and proactivity). Findings from 200 teachers revealed no direct relationship between perceived transformational leadership and teachers’ thriving. However, as expected, teachers’ emotional exhaustion moderated the relationship between perceived transformational leadership and thriving; teachers’ perceptions of the transformational leadership style was associated with a decrease in thriving when they reported moderate levels of emotional exhaustion. When teachers were very low in emotional exhaustion, perceived transformational leadership was associated with an increase in thriving. Moderated mediation analyses revealed significant indirect effects for proactivity for lower and higher levels of emotional exhaustion. We discuss the implications of the findings for theories of personal growth

    Development and internal validation of a prediction tool to aid the diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome in dogs attending primary-care practice.

    Novel methods to aid identification of dogs with spontaneous Cushing's syndrome are warranted to optimize case selection for diagnostics, avoid unnecessary testing, and ultimately aid decision-making for veterinarians. To develop and internally validate a prediction tool for dogs receiving a diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome using primary-care electronic health records. Three hundred and ninety-eight dogs diagnosed with Cushing's syndrome and 541 noncase dogs, tested for but not diagnosed with Cushing's syndrome, from a cohort of 905 544 dogs attending VetCompass participating practices. A cross-sectional study design was performed. A prediction model was developed using multivariable binary logistic regression taking the demography, presenting clinical signs and some routine laboratory results into consideration. Predictive performance of each model was assessed and internally validated through bootstrap resampling. A novel clinical prediction tool was developed from the final model. The final model included predictor variables sex, age, breed, polydipsia, vomiting, potbelly/hepatomegaly, alopecia, pruritus, alkaline phosphatase, and urine specific gravity. The model demonstrated good discrimination (area under the receiver operating curve [AUROC] = 0.78 [95% CI = 0.75-0.81]; optimism-adjusted AUROC = 0.76) and calibration (C-slope = 0.86). A tool was developed from the model which calculates the predicted likelihood of a dog having Cushing's syndrome from 0% (score = -13) to 96% (score = 10). A tool to predict a diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome at the point of first suspicion in dogs was developed, with good predictive performance. This tool can be used in practice to support decision-making and increase confidence in diagnosis. [Abstract copyright: © 2020 The Authors.
