AN EXEMPLAR-APPRENTICE MODEL FOR TEACHING DANCE COMPOSITION THROUGH PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY EDUCATION (NSW. AUSTRALIA)
Volume 2 and other video files are available from British Library's EThOS service.Dance education in New South Wales focuses on the three components of the artform -
performance, composition and appreciation. However,, historically there has been a prescribed
emphasis on performance on the assumption that performance informs composition and
appreciation.
In preliminary investigations, data gained via questionnaires to students; examination
markers' reports; and examination results, showed the above assumption to be erroneous. It
is hypothesised that, although in NSW teachers choreograph the dances performed for
assessment, the emphasis on skill acquisition to achieve the highest level of performance
possible mitigates against making connections between these dances and the composition
components in the syllabuses.
This research aimed to develop, test, and evaluate new methods of teaching these dances to
simultaneously enhance students' knowledge, understanding and skill in dance composition
and appreciation. The resultant Exemplar-Apprentice model -a development of the traditional
master-apprentice system with the teacher functioning in concurrent roles as an exemplar-artist
and as a teacher-pedagogue - is recommended because the students, as apprentices,
have access to the exemplar-artist's knowledge, intuition, experience and creativity and
through the teacher-pedagogue this develops a more holistic appreciation of dance as an
artform.
Ninety-three students from Years 10 to 12 (ages 14-17) at one sample school participated in
six interventions to test the exemplar-apprentice methodology. Appropriate analytical
frameworks and qualitative research instruments were employed to establish internal validity
within this action research project. Analysis of the data collected supports the proposition that
the Exemplar-Apprentice model can enhance knowledge, understanding and skills in dance
composition and appreciation, as well as in performance. Although claims for external
validity of the model are proposed, a Resource Template is offered to facilitate use of it in
contexts beyond the research site. Such testing, further adaptations and applications of the
Exemplar-Apprentice model by other dance teachers will extend and enhance the teaching of
dance performance in NSW and across the world
Orronic Pain: A Study of Treatment Outcome as it Relates to Coping Behaviors, Assertiveness, Spiritual Well-Being, and MMPI Scores
This study evaluated chronic pain patients in an attempt to predict treatment outcome. Forty-one volunteer patients completed a Patient History Questionnaire, The Ways of Coping (WOC), The Interpersonal Behavior Survey (!BS), The Spiritual Well-Being Inventory (SWB) , and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Each of these instruments were used to predict treatment outcome as measured by items from the Pain Treatment Outcome Questionnaire including Functional Activity Level, Use of Analgesic Medications, Subjective Pain Rating, and Return to Work. Linear regression statistics were used to determine which of the independent variables successfully predicted treatment outcome. Number of Months Since Last Worked predicted Post Treatment Return to Work and was the strongest of all the predictive variables. Functional Activity Level predicted Post Treatment Functional Activity Level. Spiritual Well-Being predicted Post Treatment reduction of Medication Use. Problem Focused Coping, from the Ways of Coping predicted Post Treatment reduction of Subjective Pain. Elevations on the MMPI D, Pd, Male and conversion V scales all predicted for a failure to reduce Post Treatment Use of Analgesic Medications. Elevations on the MMPI Mf scale predicted for Post Treatment Return to Work. All of the following variables failed to significantly predict any of the treatment outcome variables: The Ways of Coping Emotion Focused Coping, Religious Coping, the MMPI manipulative reaction profile (Hs, D, Pd, Ma), the Interpersonal Behavior Survey General Assertiveness scale, and Frequency of Church Attendance. This study was approached from a cognitive phenomenological perspective which integrated the work of Lazarus and Moos. Developing training for return to work and increasing chaplaincy programs in Pain Treatment Centers are practical applications of these findings
How do CEOs see their roles? Management philosophies and styles in family and non-family firms
Using a survey of 800 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) in 22 emerging economies, we show that CEOs' management styles and philosophies vary with the ownership and governance structure of their firms. Founders and CEOs of firms with greater family involvement display a greater stakeholder focus, and feel more accountable to employees and banks than to shareholders. They also have a more hierarchical management approach, and see their role as maintaining the status quo rather than bringing about change. In contrast, CEOs of non-family firms emphasize shareholder-value-maximization. Finally, firm-level variation in ownership is as important in explaining management philosophies as cross-country or industry-level differences. Project-based Service-Learning in an Instructional Technology Graduate Program
The study focused on the critical incidents that occurred to instructional design students when they were involved in project-based service-learning as part of a curriculum that lead to a master’s degree. The study provided an illustration that the workplace application of skills, knowledge, and understanding are enhanced through utilization. Students worked with local nonprofit agencies to provide instructional support ranging from needs assessments to delivery of course content. Results indicated that project-based service learning was an effective tool for promoting greater learning. The importance of learning through active participation and reflection was supported, and by extending learning beyond the classroom, students were able to apply their knowledge in ways that transformed their learning experience and fostered a sense of caring about others

Anisotropic Small-Polaron Hopping In W:Bivo4 Single Crystals
DC electrical conductivity, Seebeck and Hall coefficients are measured between 300 and 450 K on single crystals of monoclinic bismuth vanadate that are doped n-type with 0.3% tungsten donors (W:BiVO4). Strongly activated small-polaron hopping is implied by the activation energies of the Arrhenius conductivities (about 300 meV) greatly exceeding the energies characterizing the falls of the Seebeck coefficients' magnitudes with increasing temperature (about 50 meV). Small-polaron hopping is further evidenced by the measured Hall mobility in the ab-plane (10(-1) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) at 300 K) being larger and much less strongly activated than the deduced drift mobility (about 5 x 10(-5) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) at 300 K). The conductivity and n-type Seebeck coefficient is found to be anisotropic with the conductivity larger and the Seebeck coefficient's magnitude smaller and less temperature dependent for motion within the ab-plane than that in the c-direction. These anisotropies are addressed by considering highly anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor (approximate to 5 angstrom) transfers in addition to the somewhat shorter (approximate to 4 angstrom), nearly isotropic nearest-neighbor transfers. Copolymerization Studies of Vinyl Chloride and Vinyl Acetate with Ethylene Using a Transition-Metal Catalyst
Since the advent of Ziegler−Natta polymerization of ethylene, attempts have been made to extend coordination polymerization to commercially important monomers with polar functionality. In this study we examined the copolymerization of perdeuterated vinyl chloride (VC) and perdeuterated vinyl acetate (VA) with ethylene using a tridentate Fe(II) dichloride pyridine diimine metal catalyst. The resulting ethylene oligomers were examined by GC/MS and ^2H NMR spectroscopy. It was shown that VC was inserted once for every ∼180 ethylene monomers and VA was inserted once for every ∼350 ethylene monomers. VC and VA behave as comonomers for coordination/insertion polymerizations with ethylene. However, we find that insertion with either monomer leads to termination of the growing chain via β-elimination processes. The deuterium atoms are exclusively located at the olefin terminus for each of the monomers
