Open Educational Resources: Expanding the Conversation Regarding Adoption and Use on a College Campus

As more institutions explore Open Educational Resource (OER) initiatives, librarians should be involved in the campus-wide conversation. Also, OER means more than free online textbooks; a broader conversation needs to be prioritized as institutions step into the OER movement. This article is an adaptation of the author’s presentation at the 2016 Annual Conference of the Association of Christian Librarians, titled “Out of Bounds: Exploring Open Educational Resources.

Academic Performance among Student Library Employees: How Library Employment Impacts Grade Point Average and Perception of Success

The study of college student employment and its effects on retention, academics, and student satisfaction is not new and yet has come to varying conclusions; also, very little has been reviewed on what impact a student’s place of employment may have on their academics. This research examines student employees at a college library and how that specific type of employment has impacted the academic success of those employees. The study used a combination of data, comparing their cumulative grade point average with survey results asking about their perception of the effect library employment had on their academics. The overwhelming majority of students felt that library employment had a positive impact on their academics and this perception was confirmed by their collective, average GPAs when compared to that of their peers. This research expands the knowledge not only in the potential impact of place on academics but also in how college libraries perceive their impact upon student employees and the benefits of such employment

Each piece is a reflection of the author\u27s command of narrator, plot, characterization, and many other important elements within the art of fiction. The purpose of this creative thesis is to show examples of the author\u27s ability to demonstrate proficiency within the boundaries of a collection of short stories

Characterizing The Roles Of Il-11 And Cd68 In Breast Cancer Bone Metastasis

The molecular mechanisms regulating the preferential metastasis of breast cancer to bone have not been fully elucidated, but it is hypothesized that local conditions in the bone create an environment conducive to colonization by breast cancer cells and that the breast cancer cells interact directly with cells in the bone. In this dissertation, two goals were pursued: (1) to explore breast cancer secreted interleukin (IL)-11\u27s role on osteoclast function and (2) investigate the expression and potential role of CD68 in breast cancer adhesion to bone. Higher rates of bone metastasis occur in human breast cancer tumors expressing IL-11, a cytokine shown to promote osteoclast formation, but the specific mechanisms are controversial. I determined that breast cancer secreted IL-11 was unable to directly support osteoclast survival or formation in sub-optimal RANKL conditions but instead supports a population of osteoclast progenitors. These findings clarify IL-11\u27s specific role in breast cancer bone metastasis, and future studies are warranted to address the therapeutic potential of IL-11 for treating and preventing breast cancer induced osteolysis. For the second aim, I examined breast cancer cell lines and found that CD68, a lysosomal associated membrane protein associated with breast cancer recurrence, is upregulated in breast cancer lines that have a high capacity to metastasize to bone. A fragment of CD68 was independently identified in a phage display assay to pan for bone adhesion molecules, suggesting CD68 may be involved in breast cancer bone metastasis by acting as a bone adhesion molecule. Expression of CD68 correlated with ability of breast cancer cell lines to adhere to bone, but more specific assays failed to reveal a direct role of CD68 in adhesion to bone. Future studies are needed to characterize CD68\u27s exact role in breast cancer, but the discovery of breast cancer expression may have implications for the common use of CD68 as a macrophage marker, and may provide insight into CD68\u27s correlation as a risk factor for breast cancer recurrence. These studies contribute to the foundation of work necessary for developing specific therapeutics by contributing to a better understanding of the mechanisms regulating breast cancer bone metastasis

The historical and cultural meanings of American music lyrics from the Vietnam War.

This dissertation analyzes song lyrics written in the United States during the country’s involvement in the Vietnam War (1945-1975) by using social, historical, political, philosophical, and cultural criticisms. The majority of this dissertation focuses on Anti-Vietnam War protest lyrics, but neutral and pro-Vietnam War stances are also recognized. This work aims to primarily discuss music written in the United States during the Vietnam War era, but does recognize greater spheres of social protest against the war that occurred abroad. This dissertation asserts that the Anti-Vietnam War movement was on to something – an ideology that war was not the answer, and that, given a chance, peace could work. The Anti-Vietnam War movement brought the United States to a previously unseen cultural crossroads, yet those against the Vietnam War were ultimately unable to pronounce the movement as victorious. The horrors of war in Vietnam – depicted in this dissertation through Vietnam Veterans’ memoirs as well as through literary, philosophical and multi-media historical artifacts – and the angry cries against it – seen through historical and philosophical artifacts along with song lyrics from the era – present a portrait of the United States of America in a state of crisis. By combining a close reading of song lyrics with history, literature, philosophy, and other art forms of the era, we can ultimately see that the United States’ decision to enter the Vietnam War was a choice, but the option chosen was incorrect according to many American voices

Annotated Bibliography: The Reference Desk: Grand Idea or Gone Down the River?

This bibliography is from a panel presentation at the 2017 ACL Conference. The goal of this panel was to explore different rationales or sets of values that illustrated the continuation of the reference desk and reference service as essential to the success of the academic community. We discovered that “what to do with reference” is far from a settled question. We discovered passionate arguments, diverse models, and an array of data. In this current stage of figuring out the value of academic libraries to the campus as a whole and to students in particular, it seemed that there was limited hard data connecting Reference services to how they met students’ needs. How do we make ourselves valuable, important, essential, and useful? Maybe we need to change our model? If so, how do we examine ourselves and our environment appropriately to make this happen? What factors should we examine? Which ones must we keep? What things can we discard or change? When students come to seek assistance, they generally need the short, instant, and personal help, without having to attend a whole training session or class. Individual and personalized guidance for their immediate need is the most important factor for them. How do libraries provide that

Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute Training Methodology: Best Practices for Fire Service Instructors

    Get PDF
Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute Training Methodology: Best Practices for Fire Service Instructors was developed on February 01, 2021 by Kelly McCoy and Erin McGruder of Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute (KFRTI), leveraging the input of KFRTI Program Managers and Program Coordinators. This document will be used for “on-boarding” new and existing contract instructors within KFRTI. The intent of this document is to increase training effectiveness and instructor consistency in delivering fire services training to the State of Kansas’ 14,650 firefighters.Until October 2020, Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute (KFRTI) had over 300 contract fire instructors registered within the learning management system. This is a large number of instructors to manage and there is no information available for how effective instructors have been in the field. Using a rubric created by KFRTI, the number of contract instructors has been narrowed to 78. In addition to requiring National Fire Protection Association Instructor I certification, Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute designed a foundational training methodology document to be used in “on-boarding” new and existing contract instructors to increase instructor effectiveness and consistency in instructional approach. This methodology, based on best practices in adult learning and firefighting instruction, will help improve fire service instruction across the State of Kansas
