Many students often face difficulties when they are writing an essay in English while they are required to master written English as one of their basic competencies as the vocational students. The study observes common mistakes occurring in English essays written by first grade students of Oil and Gas Processing Study Program of Chemical Engineering Department in Politeknik Negeri Lhokseumawe, Aceh, Indonesia. The mistakes were categorized into seven types, i.e. word collocation and phrase, preposition, article/determiner, verb form, word order, spelling and punctuation. This research aims to find out the relation between the occurrences of the mistakes to the background of the students as the non-native English speaker. The methodology used in this study was combined between descriptive analysis and quantitative method. Data were analyzed by calculating the mistakes number done the students in their essays. The percentage of each mistake parameter is presented in pie chart form. Twenty-two students were involved in this study. Based on the result found in the study, the writer has gained several points that can be used to improve the teaching material for writing for academic purpose course. The study suggests that the course should focus on word collocation and some basic grammars instead of giving them English text

Managing an Effective English Language Laboratory in a Polytechnic

    Get PDF
Polytechnic graduates are required to have applied skills as well as communication skills in English. In most of the polytechnics in Indonesia, English courses are served as compulsory courses for students and in some institutions language laboratories are established in order to support their students. To run an effective language laboratory there are, at least four aspects that need to be considered, namely lab facilities, standard operating rules, students, and lab coordinators. Of all the agents, lab coordinators are classified as internal factors that can easily be empowered by the institutions in the management of the language lab. This paper aims to discuss leadership and management roles in improving an English Language Laboratory. The discussions are based on literature reviews, personal experiences and observations gained by the author whilst working at Politeknik Negeri Lhokseumawe for the last decade plus perceptions of teachers and administrators who have worked in the lab. Regarding the leadership and management in the language laboratory there are four items that should be improved: management of leadership, professional development, rewards, and the concept of educational management

This study aims to determine whether relationship marketing and service quality affect customer loyalty at Bank BPR Sumsel. This study used a causal research method, an inference research type to realize cause-and-effect, determine the influence of the variables that are the cause (independent variables), and the effect (dependent variable) of a phenomenon. The data used in this study were primary data by distributing questionnaires to deposit customers at the Head Office of the Bank BPR Sumsel. The number of samples used as respondents was 100.  The data analysis technique used in this study was multiple linear regression analysis, which was previously tested for validity and reliability. The results obtained are relationship marketing and service quality have a positive and significant effect on customer loyalty at the Bank BPR Sumsel.  From the test results, the R2 (R Square) value of 0.691 or (69.1%) indicated that the percentage contribution of the independent variables’ (RM and SQ) influence on the dependent variable (customer loyalty) was 69.1%. Alternatively, the independent variables used in the model (RM and SQ) could explain 69.1% of the dependent variable (customer loyalty). Meanwhile, the remaining 30.9% was influenced or explained by other variables not included in this research model such as pricing, brand image, and customer values

Gas-liquid two-phase flow pattern determination for vertical microchannel

    Get PDF
Microchannel has gradually received attention due to its high surface to volume rat,io, which indirectly resulted in high rate of heat and mass transfer. To achieve more efficient system, it is likely that one should have the basic understanding on the flow morphologies at the microscale. Currently, many industrial applications such as heat exchanger, bubble columns, pneumatic transport, pollution control and many others facing the multi phase flow condition. Multiphase flow can be defined as the simultaneous flow of more than one phase such as gas-solid, gas-liquid as well as gas-liquid-solid flows. Each of those multiphase flows produces different flow regimes. It is identified that studies on the flow regimes are important due to the greater influence on the heat transfer rate as well as the hydrodynamics characteristics of the flow. Thus, throughout this project, numerical study with the application of Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) software is perform to model, simulate and observe the flow regimes mapped for gas-liquid multiphase flow in a vertically oriented microchannel
