Construing Ideational Meaning in Electronics Devicesadvertisements in Jawa Pos: a Systemic Functional Linguisticmultimodal Discourse Analysis

This research deals with multimodal discourse analysis. The data were collected from printed advertisements ofJawa Pos newspaper. Generic Structure Potential of printed advertisement (GSP) proposed by Cheong (2004)and Halliday\u27s (1994) transitivity were applied. Cheong\u27s framework is applied to reveal the elements of visualand linguistic elements, meanwhile Halliday\u27s transitivity is used to know the processes. Thereby, this researchdiscovers the relationship between image and text in one context. The result shows that visual elements in theprinted advertisements are Lead, Emblem, and Display. Lead consists of Locus of Attention (LoA) andComplements to the Locus of Attention (Comp. LoA). Meanwhile, the linguistic elements are Announcement,Emblem, Enhancer, Tag, and Call-and-Visit Information. Finally, it is found that there is interconnectednessbetween the visual and linguistic elements in the printed advertisement. It causes high ContextualizationPropensity (CP), narrow Interpretative Space (IS), and also small Semantic Effervescence (SE)

<p>(A) Graphical map of the BLAST results showing nucleotide identity between <i>A</i>. <i>fasciata</i> mitogenome and 15 related species listed in <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0136297#pone.0136297.t001" target="_blank">Table 1</a>, as generated by the CGView comparison tool (CCT). CCT arranges BLAST result in an order where sequence that is most similar to the reference (<i>A</i>. <i>fasciata</i>) is placed closer to the outer edge of the map. The rings labelled 1 to17 indicate BLAST results of <i>A</i>. <i>fasciata</i> mitogenome against <i>A</i>. <i>chrysaetos</i>, <i>N</i>. <i>nipalensis</i>, <i>N</i>. <i>alboniger</i>, <i>S</i>. <i>cheela</i>, <i>A</i>. <i>monachus</i>, <i>B</i>. <i>lagopus</i>, <i>B</i>. <i>buteo</i>, <i>B</i>. <i>buteo burmanicus</i>, <i>A</i>. <i>soloensis</i>, <i>A</i>. <i>virgatus</i>, <i>A</i>. <i>gentilis</i>, <i>A</i>. <i>nisus</i>, <i>P</i>. <i>haliaetus</i>, <i>S</i>. <i>serpentarius</i>, <i>C</i>. <i>aura</i>, <i>P</i>. <i>badius</i>, and <i>S</i>. <i>leptogrammica</i>, respectively. (B) Nucleotide-based phylogenetic tree of 16 Accipitriformes species, with two Strigiformes birds as outgroups. This analysis is based on 13PCGs. Both ML and Bayesian analyses produced identical tree topologies. The ML bootstrap and Bayesian posterior probability values for each node are indicated.</p

Aspect and Entity Extraction from Opinion Documents

Opinion mining has been an active research area in Web mining and Natural Language Processing (NLP) in recent years. In this thesis, we present a comprehensive study of aspect and entity extraction from opinion documents for opinion mining. We first introduce the aspect-based opinion mining model. Then, we propose a new method for aspect extraction and ranking, which is based on language patterns and dependency grammar. Meanwhile, it is capable of ranking extracted aspects by their importance, i.e. relevancy and frequency. In addition, we discover that there are two kinds of special product aspects in some domains. One is noun aspect implying opinion. The other is the resource term. Novel extraction algorithms are proposed to identify them from opinion documents. In terms of entity extraction task, it is similar to the classic named entity extraction (NER) problem. However, there is a major difference. In a typical opinion mining application, the users often want to find opinions on some competing entities, e.g., competing or relevant products. This implies that the discovered entities must be of the same type/class. Basically, this is a set expansion problem. To deal with this problem, we present two set expansion algorithms for entity extraction in opinion documents. One is based on positive and unlabeled (PU) learning model. The other is based on Bayesian Sets. We also discuss extracting topic documents from a collection. Opinion mining system crawls and indexes opinion documents first and then used for different specific tasks later. Typically, the documents are not well categorized because one does not know what the future tasks will be. Normally, keyword search is used to find relevant opinion documents for analysis. However, the documents that are retrieved in this way can have both low recall and low precision. Another way is to train a document classifier. But the training procedure is time-consuming and labor-intensive.We propose an unsupervised technique to solve this problem based on a new PU learning algorithm

Archaeal RNA ligase from thermoccocus kodakarensis for template dependent ligation

    No full text
<p>Nicking-sealing RNA ligases play a significant biological role in host defense and cellular repair, and have become an important molecular tool in biomedical engineering. Due to the propensity for RNA to form secondary structures, RNA modifying enzymes with elevated optimum temperatures are highly desired. Current characterized double stranded RNA ligases, such as the bacteriophage T4 RNA ligase 2, while possessing good template dependency, are not active at elevated temperatures. The few characterized RNA ligases from thermophiles exhibit high template independency. We synthesize and characterize here, KOD RNA ligase (KOD1Rnl), a thermostable and template dependent RNA ligase from the archaeon, Thermoccocus Kodakarensis. We disclose that a 13 time reduction in template independent ligation can be achieved with the addition of a single stranded DNase, such as RecJ. We also elucidate the effects of the presence of blood proteins on the activity of KOD1Rnl. Template dependent and thermostable RNA ligases, such as KOD RNA ligase, can be utilized in RNA detection, modification and sequencing.</p

    Terahertz investigations on photoisomerisable compounds

<p>We performed computational terahertz studies on organometallic photoisomerisable compounds, employing both gas phase and solid phase calculations. The calculations demonstrate the potential of employing terahertz techniques on photoisomerisable compounds. In particular, the <i>trans</i>-ligand, counterion and crystal effects are evaluated via the density functional theory calculations. In order to fully understand the terahertz responses of the photoisomerisable compounds, their experimental terahertz spectra were obtained and compared to the calculations. The calculated spectra generally predict the experimentally observed absorption peaks, while combined gas phase and solid phase calculations offer better agreement with the experiments. The first principles calculations also reveal the sensitivity of terahertz signal on the photoisomerisation processes, suggesting a photo-terahertz set-up that could be built in the future to fast screen and fully understand the photoisomerisable compounds, for related applications such as photo-transducer and photo-switch that require photoinduced geometrical changes.</p

3D reconstructions with negative staining of an IgG antibody by IPET.

<p>(A) A single-instance of an IgG antibody was imaged by negative staining (NS) ET. Nine tilted views of the same single IgG particle were selected from 81 tilt micrographs that were CTF corrected by TOMOCTF, and then displayed in leftmost column. By FETR algorithm, the 3D reconstruction was iterated and converged. The corresponding tilting projections of the 3D reconstruction from major iterations were displayed beside the raw images in six columns. (B) The final 3D reconstruction of a targeted individual antibody particle was displayed in a contour level that contained a volume corresponding to 160 kDa. The reconstruction displayed three ring-shaped domains that corresponding to three domain of IgG antibody. (C) Docking the crystal structure (PDB entry 1IGT) of each domain of the IgG antibody into each ring-shaped density of IgG showed a good fit. The docking was performed by a rigid-body docking option in Chimera program <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0030249#pone.0030249-Pettersen1" target="_blank">[79]</a>. The loops between the domains were simply connected by Chimera. (D) Another example of the IPET method in a 3D reconstruction of another single-instance of a targeted individual IgG antibody particle. The NS-ET images of the raw images and projections of the related reconstruction were also displayed. (E) The 3D reconstruction of this antibody particle displayed a similar structural feature to the first one, such as the three domains. (F) Docking the IgG antibody crystal structure into the density map showed a good fit as well.</p
