    Development of a Gimballed, dual frequency, space-based, microwave antenna for volume production

    A dual-frequency, two-axis Gimballed, Microwave Antenna (GMA) has been developed by COM DEV and Motorola for commercial satellites. The need for volume production of over three hundred antennas at a rate of four per week, a compressed development schedule, and the commercial nature of the effort necessitated a paradigm shift to an 'overall' cost-driven design approach. The translation of these demands into antenna requirements, a description of the resulting GMA design, and examples of development issues are detailed herein

    Statistical analysis of 'White Riesling' (Vitis vinifera ssp. sativa L.) clonal performance at 16 locations in the Rheinland-Pfalz region of Germany between 1971 and 2007

    Performance trials have been evaluated of 30 'White Riesling' clones grown at 16 locations in the Rheinland-Pfalz region between 1971 and 2007. A mixed linear model approach was used to handle the highly-unbalanced data structure. Environmental factors accounted for about 95 % of the variation for individual observations. Genotypic clone variation contributed only 0.65 % to the total variation for grape yield, 0.29 % for total soluble solids (TSS) and 0.22 % for acidity. F-tests for clonal differences showed significant F-values for each characteristic. Estimated clone means ranged from 107.4 to 130.8 kg·ar-1 (1 ar = 100 m2) for grape yield, from 72.0 to 75.2 °Oechsle for TSS and from 12.5 to 13.4 g·l-1 for acidity. Significant mean differences were found only for clones located near the lower and upper extremes of the performance range. Long-term time trends of clonal performance are also present. On average over the 36 year period, grape yields increased by 2.00 kg·ar-1 each year and TSS by 0.87 °Oechsle each year, whereas acidity decreased by 0.21 g·l-1 each year. No significant deviations of individual clones from the general long-term trends were verifiable for grape yield but some clones showed significant deviations for TSS and acidity.A closer look at the linear trend for grape yield displayed a discontinuity around 1989. Before 1989 a linear gain of about 3.99 kg·ar-1 was apparent whereas, after this time a very slight decrease of 0.28 kg·ar-1 was observed. For mean daily temperature, the long-term trend was remarkably parallel to that of grape yield and TSS. For the Rheinland-Pfalz region, daily temperature increased significantly by 0.046 °C per year, whereas average daily sunshine showed a no significant change over time.

    Age and growth of blue rockfish (Sebastes mystinus) from central and northern California

    Otoliths from blue rockfish (Sebastes mystinus), were aged by using a combination of surface and break-and-burn methods. The samples were collected between 1978 and 1998 off central and northern California. Annual growth increments in the otoliths were validated by using edge analysis for females up to age 23 and for males to age 25.The first annual growth increment was identified by comparing the diameter of the otolith from fish known to be one year old collected in May (when translucent zone formation was completed) to the mean diameter of the first translucent zone in the otoliths from older fish. Our estimated maxi-mum ages of 44 years for males and 41 years for females were much older than those reported in previous studies. Von Bertalanffy growth models were developed for each sex. Females grew faster and reached larger maximum length than males. The growth models were similar to those generated in other studies of this species in southern and central California. Fish from northern and central California had similar maximum sizes, maximum ages, and growth model parameters

    Measuring highly accurate foot position and angle trajectories with foot-mounted IMUs in clinical practice

    Background: Gait analysis using foot-mounted IMUs is a promising method to acquire gait parameters outside of laboratory settings and in everyday clinical practice. However, the need for precise sensor attachment or calibration, the requirement of environments with a homogeneous magnetic field, and the limited applicability to pathological gait patterns still pose challenges. Furthermore, in previously published work, the measurement accuracy of such systems is often only validated for specific points in time or in a single plane. Research question: This study investigates the measurement accuracy of a gait analysis method based on foot-mounted IMUs in the acquisition of the foot motion, i.e., position and angle trajectories of the foot in the sagittal, frontal, and transversal plane over the entire gait cycle. Results: A comparison of the proposed method with an optical motion capture system showed an average RMSE of 0.67° for pitch, 0.63° for roll and 1.17° for yaw. For position trajectories, an average RMSE of 0.51 cm for vertical lift and 0.34 cm for lateral shift was found. The measurement error of the IMU-based method is found to be much smaller than the deviations caused by the shoes. Significance: The proposed method is found to be sufficiently accurate for clinical practice. It does not require precise mounting, special calibration movements, or magnetometer data, and shows no difference in measurement accuracy between normal and pathological gait. Therefore, it provides an easy-to-use alternative to optical motion capture and facilitates gait analysis independent of laboratory settings

    Description and growth of larval and pelagic juvenile pygmy rockfish (Sebastes wilsoni) (family Sebastidae)

    A developmental series of larval and pelagic juvenile pygmy rockfish (Sebastes wilsoni) from central California is illustrated and described. Sebastes wilsoni is a non- commercially, but ecologically, important rockfish, and the ability to differentiate its young stages will aid researchers in population abundance studies. Pigment patterns, meristic characters, morphometric measurements, and head spination were recorded from specimens that ranged from 8.1 to 34.4 mm in standard length. Larvae were identified initially by meristic characters and the absence of ventral and lateral midline pigment. Pelagic juveniles developed a prominent pigment pattern of three body bars that did not extend to the ventral surface. Species identification was confirmed subsequently by using mitochondrial sequence data of four representative specimens of various sizes. As determined from the examination of otoliths, the growth rate of larval and pelagic juvenile pygmy rockfish was 0.28 mm/day, which is relatively slow in comparison to the growth rate of other species of Sebastes.     Influence of ocean conditions on the timing of early life history events for blue rockfish (Sebastes mystinus) off California

    Settled juvenile blue rockfish (Sebastes mystinus) were collected from two kelp beds approximately 335 km apart off Mendocino in northern California and Monterey in central California. A total of 112 rockfish were collected from both sites over 5 years (1993, 1994, 2001, 2002, and 2003). Total age, settlement date, age at settlement, and birth date were determined from otolith microstructure. Fish off Mendocino settled mostly in June and fish off Monterey settled mostly in May (average difference in settlement=23 days). Although the difference in the timing of settlement followed this same pattern for both areas over the five years, settlement occurred later in 2002 and 2003 than in the prior years of sampling. The difference in the timing of settlement was due primarily to differences in birth dates for the two areas. The time of settlement was positively related to upwelling and negatively related to sea level anomaly for most of the months before settlement. Knowledge of the timing of settlement has implications for design and placement of marine protected areas because protection of nursery grounds is frequently a major objective of these protected areas. The timing of settlement is also an important consideration in the planning of surveys of early recruits because mistimed surveys (caused by latitudinal differences in the timing of settlement) could produce biased estimates

The main caveat to this approach is that without proper oversight by the authority, operators may reduce quality to cut costs and maximize profits. To counter this, performance regimes are developed and incentives are typically offered to achieve the policy goals of the authority. Through an analysis of current theory and practice, this thesis is intended to serve as an introduction to the end-to-end process of transport contracts- drawing from the fields of contract economics, organizational structure, service quality, and performance measurement as they relate to public transport service. Expanding on current practice, suggestions are offered for future interurban bus operations contracts in the Province of Gipuzkoa, Spain. First, several recommendations regarding contract structure and bidding procedures are discussed, proposed, and demonstrated. Then, under the framework of the European standard on quality management in public transport, a selection of performance measures are proposed. These measures were especially selected and designed for the technological capacities and operational conditions of Gipuzkoa. Several of these measures (ridership, on-time performance, and completed service) are then suggested for incentives within future contracts.
