    Sustainable development and its impact on entrepreneurship and investments

    The effects of sustainable development on entrepreneurship and investments are discussed. It is observed that financial enlargement is a prerequisite of financial development for which production increase and more input are essential. An environmentally compatible development of entrepreneurship does not constitutes of a ecological sensitivity alone and is also a prerequesite for the continuance of development. It is suggested that in order to achieve sustainable development, it should be based on a system of reasonable terms with cohesion and consistency aiming at the safeguarding of the ecosystem survival

    An evaluation approach to environmental program and project planning

    This paper presents the incorporation of realistic practice into the formulation of evaluation methodology in environmental planning. The approach is based on the principles of realistic evaluation. The latter, founded on scientific realist philosophy, offers a complete blueprint for evaluation activities and proposes realistic development in policy making. Combining theory and method, as well as qualitative and quantitative procedures, realistic evaluation focuses on testing theories of how outcomes are generated by specific mechanisms, fired and activated in particular contexts. Its commitment to the belief that evaluation research depends on the investigation of causal explanation underlines the fact that environmental interventions are closely connected with and affect social world. In this way the social dimension in environmental interventions is enhanced and a more sophisticated perspective is introduced in the evaluation process. Realistic evaluation offers to environmental planning and development an actual practice into the conduct of evaluation. © 2004 Kluwer Academic Publishers

    Planning, management and assessment of projects concerning hazardous waste in Greece

    Managing industrial hazardous waste (IHW) is a complex issue. This study summarizes the main industries in Greece that produce IHW, the major types of IHW and the corresponding quantities. Main sources of IHW in Greece are industrial plants such as chemical, refinery, cement, and fertilizer industries and the major types are sludge from wastewater treatment, slug and dust from dust filters. Greece, at the time, does not have proper disposal sites or facilities and the present methods of disposal are temporary storage and export. A catalogue containing Greek laws that govern IHW management is being presented and the main laws are analyzed. Proven IHW treatment and processing technologies and methods are described in this paper and finally a proposal concerning management of IHW projects in Greece is being made in order IHW and all related projects to be managed in an environmentally sound way

The current paper demonstrates a concise description of the existing environmental impact appraisal methods and, simultaneously, a new combination of monetary valuation techniques applied in each potential receptor, which intends to provide an innovative multiperspective assessment concerning future environmental projects

    Application of risk management techniques for the remediation of an old mining site in Greece

    This article summarizes the project and risk management of a remediation/reclamation project in Lavrion, Greece. In Thoricos the disposal of mining and metallurgical wastes in the past resulted in the contamination with heavy metals and acid mine drainage. The objective of this reclamation project was to transform this coastal zone from a contaminated site to an area suitable for recreation purposes. A separate risk assessment study was performed to provide the basis of determining the relevant environmental contamination and to rate the alternative remedial schemes involved. The study used both existing data available from comprehensive studies, as well as newly collected field data. For considering environmental risk, the isolation and minimization of risk option was selected, and a reclamation scheme, based on environmental criteria, was applied which was comprised of in situ neutralization, stabilization and cover of the potentially acid generating wastes and contaminated soils with a low permeability geochemical barrier. Additional measures were specifically applied in the areas where highly sulphidic wastes existed constituting active acid generation sources, which included the encapsulation of wastes in HDPE liners installed on clay layers.
