    Culture Matters - A Study on Presence in an Interactive Movie

    <p><i>We conducted a cross cultural study to test the influences of different cultural backgrounds on the user’s presence experience in interacting with a distributed interactive movie. In addition we were interested in the effects of embodied interaction on presence. The influence of culture background is clear - Chinese participants perceived more presence than Dutch participants in all conditions. The results also show that interaction methods (direct touch against remote control) had no influence, while embodiment (robot against screen agent) had mixed effects on presence. </i></p

    Giant Magnetic Anisotropy of Transition-Metal Dimers on Defected Graphene

    Continuous miniaturization of magnetic units in spintronics and quantum computing devices inspires efforts to search for magnetic nanostructures with giant magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) and high structural stability. Through density functional theory calculations, we found that either Pt–Ir or Os–Ru dimer forms a stable vertical structure on the defected graphene and possess an MAE larger than 60 meV, sufficient for room-temperature applications. Interestingly, their MAEs can be conveniently manipulated by using an external electric field, which makes them excellent magnetic units in spintronics and quantum computing devices

    Large Perpendicular Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy at the Fe/Pb(001) Interface

    The search for ultrathin magnetic films with large perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (PMA) has been inspired for years by the continuous miniaturization of magnetic units in spintronics devices. The common magnetic materials used in research and applications are based on Fe because the pure Fe metal is the best yet simple magnetic material from nature. Through systematic first-principles calculations, we explored the possibility to produce large PMA with ultrathin Fe on non-noble and non-magnetic Pb(001) substrate. Interestingly, huge magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of 7.6 meV was found in the Pb/Fe/Pb(001) sandwich structure with only half monolayer Fe. The analysis of electronic structures reveals that the magnetic proximity effect at the interface is responsible for this significant enhancement of MAE. The MAE further increases to 13.6 meV with triply repeated capping Pb and intermediate Fe layers. Furthermore, the MAE can be tuned conveniently by charge injection

    ATPbind: Accurate Protein–ATP Binding Site Prediction by Combining Sequence-Profiling and Structure-Based Comparisons

    Protein–ATP interactions are ubiquitous in a wide variety of biological processes. Correctly locating ATP binding sites from protein information is an important but challenging task for protein function annotation and drug discovery. However, there is no method that can optimally identify ATP binding sites for different proteins. In this study, we report a new composite predictor, ATPbind, for ATP binding sites by integrating the outputs of two template-based predictors (i.e., S-SITE and TM-SITE) and three discriminative sequence-driven features of proteins: position specific scoring matrix, predicted secondary structure, and predicted solvent accessibility. In ATPbind, we assembled multiple support vector machines (SVMs) based on a random undersampling technique to cope with the serious imbalance phenomenon between the numbers of ATP binding sites and of non-ATP binding sites. We also constructed a new gold-standard benchmark data set consisting of 429 ATP binding proteins from the PDB database to evaluate and compare the proposed ATPbind with other existing predictors. Starting from a query sequence and predicted I-TASSER models, ATPbind can achieve an average accuracy of 72%, covering 62% of all ATP binding sites while achieving a Matthews correlation coefficient value that is significantly higher than that of other state-of-the-art predictors

    Objective: To explore the association between vitamin A (vit A) status and risk of asthma.Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and the Cochrane Library were electronically searched to identify related studies that reported the association between vit A status and asthma. All databases were searched from inception to November 2022. Two reviewers independently screened literature, extracted data, and assessed risk bias of included studies. Meta-analysis was performed on R software Version 4.1.2 and STATA Version 12.0.Results: A total of 19 observational studies were included. A pooled analysis showed that the serum vit A concentrations in patients with asthma was lower than that in healthy controls (standard mean difference (SMD)= −2.479, 95% confidence interval (CI): −3.719, −.239, 95% prediction interval (PI): −7.510, 2.552), and relatively higher vit A intake in pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of asthma at age 7 years (risk ratio (RR)= 1.181, 95% CI: 1.048, 1.331). No significant correlation was observed between serum vit A levels or vit A intake and the risk of asthma.Conclusion: Our meta-analysis confirms that serum vit A levels are lower in patients with asthma than in healthy controls. Relatively higher vit A intake during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of asthma at age 7 years. There is no significant correlation between vit A intake and asthma risk in children, nor between serum vit A levels and asthma risk. The effect of vit A may depend on age or developmental stage, diet and genetics.
