Small x nonlinear evolution with impact parameter and the structure function data
The nonlinear Balitsky-Kovchegov equation at small x is solved numerically,
incorporating impact parameter dependence. Confinement is modeled by including
effective gluon mass in the dipole evolution kernel, which regulates the
splitting of dipoles with large sizes. It is shown, that the solution is
sensitive to different implementations of the mass in the kernel. In addition,
running coupling effects are taken into account in this analysis. Finally, a
comparison of the calculations using the dipole framework with the inclusive

Topical Tritiated Thymidine for Epidermal Growth Fraction Determination
Direct autoradiographic identification of the epidermal growth fraction (GF) requires the delivery of tritiated thymidine ([3H]dThd) to the skin during the time interval of an entire cell cycle. The GF in normal human epidermis has not been directly measured using this technique because the systemic infusion of radioactive [3H]dThd in benign skin conditions is precluded by ethical considerations. Studies were undertaken to assess the feasibility of measuring the epidermal GF in vivo by the topical delivery of [3H]dThd. The percutaneous penetration of [3dThd in various vehicles was evaluated to select an effective topical delivery system. A vehicle consisting of Azone, isopropanol, and water (2:49:49) was the best of 4 different vehicles tested. The optimal penetration of [3H]dThd, with respect to the concentration of Azone over a range of 0–4%, was achieved at 2%. During the initial 24h following a single topical application of [3H]dThd to hairless mice the labeling increased linearly with time. In vivo studies in hairless mice produced a GF of 95% by both continuous systemic [3H]dThd infusion, and by twice daily topical [3H]dThd. Azone vehicles induced epidermal hyperplasia which was minimized by lowering the Azone concentration and by decreasing the frequency of applications from 24 to 48h. Rapid RBE-Weighted Proton Radiation Dosimetry Risk Assessment
Proton therapy dose is affected by relative biological effectiveness differently than X-ray therapies. The current clinically accepted weighting factor is 1.1 at all positions along the depth–dose profile. However, the relative biological effectiveness correlates with the linear energy transfer, cell or tissue type, and the dose per fraction causing variation of relative biological effectiveness along the depth–dose profile. In this article, we present a simple relative biological effectiveness-weighted treatment planning risk assessment algorithm in 2-dimensions and compare the results with those derived using the standard relative biological effectiveness of 1.1. The isodose distribution profiles for beams were accomplished using matrices that represent coplanar intersecting beams. These matrices were combined and contoured using MATLAB to achieve the distribution of dose. There are some important differences in dose distribution between the dose profiles resulting from the use of relative biological effectiveness = 1.1 and the empirically derived depth-dependent values of relative biological effectiveness. Significant hot spots of up to twice the intended dose are indicated in some beam configurations. This simple and rapid risk analysis could quickly evaluate the safety of various dose delivery schema
The arrestin-domain containing protein AdcA is a response element to stress.
International audienceBACKGROUND: Cell behaviour is tightly determined by sensing and integration of extracellular changes through membrane detectors such as receptors and transporters and activation of downstream signalling cascades. Arrestin proteins act as scaffolds at the plasma membrane and along the endocytic pathway, where they regulate the activity and the fate of some of these detectors. Members of the arrestin clan are widely present from unicellular to metazoa, with roles in signal transduction and metabolism. As a soil amoeba, Dictyostelium is frequently confronted with environmental changes likely to compromise survival. Here, we investigated whether the recently described arrestin-related protein AdcA is part of the cell response to stresses. RESULTS: Our data provide evidence that AdcA responds to a variety of stresses including hyperosmolarity by a transient phosphorylation. Analysis in different mutant backgrounds revealed that AdcA phosphorylation involves pathways other than the DokA and cGMP-dependent osmostress pathways, respectively known to regulate PKA and STATc, key actors in the cellular response to conditions of hyperosmolarity. Interestingly, however, both AdcA and STATc are sensitive to changes in the F-actin polymerization status, suggesting a common primary sensor/trigger and linking the stress-sensitive kinase responsive for AdcA phosphorylation to the actin cytoskeleton. We also show that STATc-dependent transcriptional activity is involved for the timely dephosphorylation of AdcA in cells under stress. CONCLUSION: Under osmotic stress, AdcA undergoes a phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cycle involving a stress-sensitive kinase and the transcription regulator STATc. This transient post-transcriptional modification may allow a regulation of AdcA function possibly to optimize the cellular stress response
Operative versus nonoperative treatment of acute Achilles tendon ruptures: A pilot economic decision analysis
Background: The operative treatment of Achilles tendon ruptures has been associated with lower rerupture rates and better function but also a risk of surgery-related complications compared with nonoperative treatment, which may provide improved outcomes with accelerated rehabilitation protocols. However, economic decision analyses integrating the updated costs of both treatment options are limited in the literature.
Purpose: To compare the cost-effectiveness of operative and nonoperative treatment of acute Achilles tendon tears.
Study Design: Economic and decision analysis; Level of evidence, 2.
Methods: An economic decision model was built to assess the cost-utility ratio (CUR) of open primary repair versus nonoperative treatment for acute Achilles tendon ruptures, based on direct costs from the practices of sports medicine and foot and ankle surgeons at a single tertiary academic center, with published outcome probabilities and patient utility data. Multiway sensitivity analyses were performed to reflect the range of data.
Results: Nonoperative treatment was more cost-effective in the average scenario (nonoperative CUR, US1995), but crossover occurred during the sensitivity analysis (nonoperative CUR range, US2079; operative CUR range, US8380). Operative treatment cost an extra average marginal CUR of US$1475 compared with nonoperative treatment, assuming uneventful healing in both treatment arms. The sensitivity analysis demonstrated a decreased marginal CUR of operative treatment when the outcome utility was maximized, and rerupture rates were minimized compared with nonoperative treatment.
Conclusion: Nonoperative treatment was more cost-effective in average scenarios. Crossover indicated that open primary repair would be favorable for maximized outcome utility, such as that for young athletes or heavy laborers. The treatment decision for acute Achilles tendon ruptures should be individualized. These pilot results provide inferences for further longitudinal analyses incorporating future clinical evidence
