    Natural ventilation for dwellings in tropical wet regions is very important for health. The requirement for natural ventilation is measured in air change rate (ACH) constituting of the availability of fresh air, quality of air circulation, heat losses, and unwanted gasses in the room. Wind speed is useful for accelerating evaporative cooling process and thus plays an important role for thermal comfort in the interior room. Local wind conditions affects the ventilation of a building and therefore might cause problems in predicting the natural ventilation and thermal comfort in a high-rise building, especially in the area and orientation of an opening that is not perpendicular to the wind direction. Ventilation parameters that are to be observed are the air flow rate and air change (ACH) that are gained from a simulation using the AILOS software. The results show that if the opening orientation is at the wind shadow zone, the interior space will not receive wind, it obtains sucking pressure instead. The design of an opening should focus on the area of inlet and outlet because when ACH does not increase, consequently internal wind speed becomes low and thermal comfort will not be met

    Residential buildings require adequate natural light distribution for visual comfort and daily productivity. To analyze natural light distribution is to use illuminance dan daylight factor (DF) values, in relation to the atmospheric condition and wet tropical environment. Problems arise from the dimensions, materials, opening orientations, overhangs and obstructions used in low-cost residential flats. This research aims to observe the influence of the dimensions in openings, overhangs and obstructions on the lighting strategy and the role of the three aspects in increasing visual comfort. The simulation activity of this natural lighting phenomenon is performed using the SUPERLITE v. 2.0. program. The results show that dimensions, materials and the orientation of the openings influences the contour pattern of lighting in the building and triggers glare if the lighting contrast is too high. Overhangs over the openings that are too large may decrease light penetration inside the building because they hinder Sky Component (SC), but are likely to increase Externally Reflected Component (ERC) value depending on the reflection potential of the surface. The presence of obstuction infront of an opening can decrease light intensity inside the building because of the decrease in SC value but can also minimize glare since the light intensity entering the building would be more even in distribution

    Salah satu penunjang kegiatan akademik dalam proses belajar mengajar di kampus adalah ruang laboratorium. Kegiatan di dalam ruang laboratorium dapat berjalan dengan efektif jika didukung dengan sistem pencahayaan buatan yang memadai. Tidak jarang sistem pencahayaan buatan dalam sebuah kampus kurang mendapat perhatian karena pada saat perancangan nilai ekonomis yang menjadi perhatian utama. Pada laboratorium Jurusan Sastra Inggris dan Jurusan Ilmu Komunikasi di Universitas Kristen Petra Surabaya hanya terdapat 1 dari 9 laboratorium yang memenuhi standar tingkat luminasi buatan. Dengan bantuan program software DIALux 4.9 dilakukan proses optimasi sistem pencahayaan buatan pada beberapa laboratorium yang belum memenuhi persyaratan tersebut. Hasil optimasi menunjukkan bahwa untuk memperoleh sistem pencahayaan buatan yang efektif dan efisien perlu dilakukan penggantian beberapa tipe lampu dan warna dinding ruang laboratoriu

    In multi-function rooms, the acoustic system usually becomes a vital issue because speech and music truly depend on sound in delivering message. The accuracy of a message and its meaning delivered to the audience increases with the quality of the acoustic system of the room. Conversely, choosing and applying the right materials for the interior elements and furnitures is truly vital in creating a good acoustic system. Results of observation in the multi-function room of Salle France CCCL Surabaya reveal the poor reverberation time and sound insulation of the room. This study uses the quantitative research method in which field data are analyzed and verified to determine the reverberation time, acoustic response and sound insulation. This process was done by using manual calculation as well as computerized calculation using the Autodesk Ecotect Analysis 2010 software. The process of optimizing the acoustic design system was then performed while still considering the rules of conservation buildings to achieve the optimum design solution. The results of optimization revealed that addition of new elements in the interior of the Salle France multi-function room is required that are not permanent and could be returned to their original form so that they abide by the main rules of conservation buildings. Attempts to insulate sound were done by adding new elements such as glasswool, rubber, eva sponge, sealant and acourette mat in ceilings, cable holes, keyholes, slots, and jalousies on the door to prevent sound leaks from the room

    A classroom functions as a place for learning and teaching activities. To accommodate these funcions, it is important to consider the lighting quality that should meet the standard requirement for the learning activities. Initial measurements of the light intensity of the classrooms in SMA Negri 9 Surabaya show that some of these classrooms have not met the standard requirement. This research used the Dialux v. 4.8 software to investigate and discover the best lighting quality that should be achieved according to ligthing standards. Results show that the type of lamp used influences the lighting conditions of a classroom. Meanwhile different interior elements, furniture materials and finishings also affect the distribution of light which produce different light reflections that influence the comfort level of the users. The use of colour on the interior elements and furnitures also affect the light intensity in which every colour produces different light reflections and interior atmoshphere

    Inpatient rooms in Dutch colonial heritage hospitals have some unique physical characteristics related to lighting, such as the height of the building structure and the use of terazzo for wall and floor finishing. These characteristics cause the atmosphere of the hospital to appear bleak since the amount of lighting illumination in the rooms is not fulfilled. The purpose of this research is to analyze and find solutions for optimal lighting design by taking the case of the upper-class wards in two Dutch colonial hospitals in Surabaya: the RS Darmo and the SSR St. Vincentius A Paulo. The first step is observation and measurement using Lightmeter LX-103 to determine the amount of turning on the instrument room, followed by verification and simulation optimization using a computer program of DIALux v.4.6. The analysis showed that the lighting conditions on the wards at both hospitals have not met the optimum standards. Thus, there are several ways to optimize light levels, including: the replacement of materials and colors of the walls and floors with brighter colors, decreasing the ceiling height using a drop ceiling, replacement of the colors of the furniture with brighter colors, and the use of 28-36W fluorescent lamp and soft white 26W down lighting
