Quantum Critical Dynamics Simulation of Dirty Boson Systems

Recently the scaling result z=dz=d for the dynamic critical exponent at the Bose glass to superfluid quantum phase transition has been questioned both on theoretical and numerical grounds. This motivates a careful evaluation of the critical exponents in order to determine the actual value of zz. We study a model of quantum bosons at T=0 with disorder in 2D using highly effective worm Monte Carlo simulations. Our data analysis is based on a finite size scaling approach to determine the scaling of the quantum correlation time from simulation data for boson world lines. The resulting critical exponents are z=1.8±0.05,ν=1.15±0.03,z=1.8 \pm 0.05, \nu=1.15 \pm 0.03, and η=0.3±0.1\eta=-0.3 \pm 0.1, hence suggesting that z=2z=2 is not satisfied.Comment: 4 pages 4 figure

Higher-order contributions and non-perturbative effects in the non-degenerate nonlinear optical absorption of direct-gap semiconductors

The semiconductor Bloch equations for a two-band model including inter- and intraband excitation are used to study the nonlinear absorption of single and multiple light pulses by direct-gap semiconductors. For a consistent analysis the contributions to the absorption originating from both the interband polarization and the intraband current need to be included. In the Bloch equation approach theses contributions as well as different excitation pathways in terms of sequences of inter- and intraband excitations can be evaluated separately which allows for a transparent analysis, the identification of the dominant terms, and analyzing their dependence on the excitation conditions. In the perturbative regime, we obtain analytical expressions for the multi-photon absorption coefficients for continuous-wave excitation. These results are shown to agree well with numerical results for short pulses and/or finite dephasing and relaxation times and we confirm the previously predicted strong enhancement of two-photon absorption for non-degenerate conditions for pulsed excitation. We discuss the dependencies on the light frequencies, initial band populations, and the time delay between the pulses. The frequency dependence of the two-photon absorption coefficient for non-degenerate excitation is evaluated perturbatively in third-order. The higher-order contributions to the optical absorption include three- and four-photon absorption and show a rich frequency dependence including negative regions and dispersive lineshapes. Non-perturbative solutions of the Bloch equations demonstrate a strongly non-monotonous behavior of the intensity-dependent optical absorption for a single incident pulse and in a pump-probe set-up

Three-dimensional universality class of Ising model with power-law-correlated critical disorder

We use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to test the Weinrib-Halperin criterion that predicts new universality classes in the presence of sufficiently slowly decaying power-law-correlated quenched disorder. While new universality classes are reasonably well established, the predicted exponents are controversial. We propose a method of growing such correlated disorder using the three-dimensional Ising model as benchmark systems both for generating disorder and studying the resulting phase transition. Critical equilibrium configurations of a disorder-free system are used to define the two-value distributed random bonds with a small power-law exponent given by the pure Ising exponent. Finite-size scaling analysis shows a new universality class with a single phase transition, but the critical exponents νd=1.13(5),ηd=0.48(3)\nu_d=1.13(5), \eta_d=0.48(3) differ significantly from theoretical predictions. We find that depending on details of the disorder generation, disorder-averaged quantities can develop peaks at two temperatures for finite sizes. Finally, a layer model with the two values of bonds spatially separated to halves of the system genuinely has multiple phase transitions and thermodynamic properties can be flexibly tuned by adjusting the model parameters.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

Does Passive Social Media Use Harm Well-Being?

    Get PDF
Research into the effects of social media on well-being often distinguishes “active” and “passive” use, with passive use supposedly more harmful to well-being (i.e., the passive use hypothesis). Recently, several studies and reviews have begun to question this hypothesis and its conceptual basis, the active/passive dichotomy. As this dichotomy has become a staple of social media research but evidence challenging its validity is mounting, a comprehensive debate on its pros, cons, and potential future is needed. This adversarial review brings together two voices – one more supportive, and the other more critical – toward the active/passive model. In constructive dialogue, we summarize and contrast our two opposing positions: The first position argues that the active/passive dichotomy is a useful framework because it adequately describes how and why passive use is (more) harmful for well-being. The second position challenges the validity of the dichotomy and the passive use hypothesis specifically. Arguments are presented alongside (a) the empirical basis, (b) conceptualization, and (c) operationalization of active and passive use, with particular focus on the passive use hypothesis. Rather than offering a conciliatory summary of the status quo, the goal of this review is to carve out key points of friction in the literature on the effects of social media through fruitful debate. We summarize our main agreements and unresolved disagreements on the merits and shortcomings of the active/passive dichotomy. In doing so, this review paves the way for researchers to decide whether and how they want to continue applying this lens in their future work

Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States. This paper describe development and financial performance of cooperative in District Pelalawan among 2007 - 2008. Studies on primary and secondary cooperative in 12 sub-districts. Method in this stady use performance measuring of productivity, efficiency, growth, liquidity, and solvability of cooperative. Productivity of cooperative in Pelalawan was highly but efficiency still low. Profit and income were highly, even liquidity of cooperative very high, and solvability was good
