    More frequencies of KUV 02464+3239

    Preliminary results on KUV 02464+3239, a pulsating DA white dwarf are presented. Located near the red edge of the DAV instability strip, KUV 02464+3239 shows large amplitude and long period pulsation modes. Up to now only one mode was known from a 50-minute-long light curve. Our more extended observations allowed the identification of three additional frequencies. The presence of previously known harmonics were confirmed and weak subharmonics are also noticeable at some parts of the light curve.     Comment to the paper : Collapse of the vortex-lattice inductance and shear modulus at the melting transition in untwinned YBa2_2Cu3_3O7_7, by Matl \QTR{em}{et al.}

    In a recent paper, Matl et al present a high-frequency study of the complex resistivity of a pinned vortex lattice in YBaCuO . They focus on the inductive-to-resistive transition which is investigated as a function of temperature at a constant field B0=2B_0=2 T, so that the transition is associated with the vanishing of vortex pinning strength. To our view, their conclusions rely on a rather brittle experimental body and the collapse of C66 results from an involved analysis of the finite frequency corrections to ρ(ω)\rho (\omega). These corrections are not necessary since the complex frequency spectrum has been previously interpreted by the two modes model, first proposed for low Tc materials. We think that it is more adequate to interpret the present data and should be at least considered.Comment: 4pages tex. submitted to PR

    Exploring the Knoedler Gallery\u27s Premium Picture Market, 1872-1934

    This paper was first delivered at the conference Art Dealers, America and the International Art Market, 1880-1930 sponsored by the Getty Research Institute, The Getty, Los Angeles, CA, January 2018. The essay is based on research conducted at the GRI Special Collections’s archival holdings of materials belonging to the New York art gallery M. Knoedler & Co. The paper outlines a quantitative methodology for approaching the Getty’s data set, which was created through the transcription of Knoedler’s 11 painting stock books covering the gallery’s operations from 1872 to its closing in 1970. The paper explores the advantages of concentrating on the gallery’s premium picture market and discusses what can and cannot be learned from the information provided by the stock books. It explains why concentrating on the gallery’s purchases rather than sales best reveals the evolving tastes of American art collectors from the Gilded Age to the Depression. Using only Knoedler’s high-end market, the paper demonstrates which artists and kinds of art the gallery most strongly invested in and how these investments changed over time
