During the early twentieth century, Feininger traveled between Germany and the United States, bringing new ideas about painting that he learned from the German Expressionists and invigorating modernist art in America. This work reflects the German Expressionists’ commitment to employing traditional materials in new ways—Feininger created a modern, geometric abstraction using a woodcut, one of the oldest printmaking techniques. Part of the James Smith Pierce Collection.
