Bayesian Statistical Inference on Elliptical Matrix Distributions
In this paper we are concerned with Bayesian statistical inference for a class of elliptical distributions with parameters μ and Σ. Under a noninformative prior distribution, we obtain the posterior distribution, posterior mean, and generalized maximim likelihood estimators of μ and Σ. Under the entropy loss and quadratic loss, the best Bayesian estimators of Σ are derived as well. Some applications are given
Multi-wavelength Stellar Polarimetry of the Filamentary Cloud IC5146: I. Dust Properties
We present optical and near-infrared stellar polarization observations toward
the dark filamentary clouds associated with IC5146. The data allow us to
investigate the dust properties (this paper) and the magnetic field structure
(Paper II). A total of 2022 background stars were detected in -, -,
-, and/or -bands to mag. The ratio of the polarization
percentage at different wavelengths provides an estimate of ,
the wavelength of peak polarization, which is an indicator of the small-size
cutoff of the grain size distribution. The grain size distribution seems to
significantly change at 3 mag, where both the average and dispersion
of decrease. In addition, we found
0.6-0.9 m for mag, which is larger than the 0.55 m
in the general ISM, suggesting that grain growth has already started in low
regions. Our data also reveal that polarization efficiency (PE ) decreases with as a power-law in -, -, and
-bands with indices of -0.710.10, -1.230.10 and -0.530.09.
However, -band data show a power index change; the PE varies with
steeply (index of -0.950.30) when mag but softly
(index of -0.250.06) for greater values. The soft decay of PE in
high regions is consistent with the Radiative Aligned Torque model,
suggesting that our data trace the magnetic field to mag.
Furthermore, the breakpoint found in -band is similar to the where we
found the dispersion significantly decreased. Therefore, the
flat PE- in high regions implies that the power index changes result
from additional grain growth.Comment: 31 pages, 17 figures, and 3 tables; accepted for publication in Ap
Whole exome and targeted deep sequencing identify genome-wide allelic loss and frequent SETDB1 mutations in malignant pleural mesotheliomas.
Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), a rare malignancy with a poor prognosis, is mainly caused by exposure to asbestos or other organic fibers, but the underlying genetic mechanism is not fully understood. Genetic alterations and causes for multiple primary cancer development including MPM are unknown. We used whole exome sequencing to identify somatic mutations in a patient with MPM and two additional primary cancers who had no evidence of venous, arterial, lymphovascular, or perineural invasion indicating dissemination of a primary lung cancer to the pleura. We found that the MPM had R282W, a key TP53 mutation, and genome-wide allelic loss or loss of heterozygosity, a distinct genomic alteration not previously described in MPM. We identified frequent inactivating SETDB1 mutations in this patient and in 68 additional MPM patients (mutation frequency: 10%, 7/69) by targeted deep sequencing. Our observations suggest the possibility of a new genetic mechanism in the development of either MPM or multiple primary cancers. The frequent SETDB1 inactivating mutations suggest there could be new diagnostic or therapeutic options for MPM
Assessment of changes in lipid profile and related enzymes in children with asthma
Purpose: To investigate the influence of the lipid profile and related parameters on the development of asthma in children aged 10 to 15 years. Methods: Peripheral blood samples were collected from a group diagnosed with asthma as well as from a healthy control group. The lipid profile parameters measured were total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC), reduced glutathione (GSH), and malondialdehyde (MDA), and the activities of lecithin–cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) and cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP).Results: TC, TG, LDL, and VLDL levels were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher in the asthma group compared with the controls, while HDL level was lower. Total TAC and GSH were lower in the asthma group, while MDA level, and LCAT and CETP activities were higher. Conclusion: There is a link between an elevated lipid profile and increased antioxidant capacity in asthmatic children

Synthesis, Structural Characterization, Hirschfeld Surface Analysis and Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction of Yb(III) Complex with 4-Aacetylphenoxyacetic Acid and 1,10-Phenanthroline Ligands
A new nine-coordinated Yb(III) complex [YbL3(Phen)] (1) (HL = 2-(4-acetylphenoxy)acetic acid (APA), Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) was synthesized with 2-(4-acetylphenoxy)acetic acid, YbCl3.6H2O, NaOH and 1,10-phenanthroline as materials. Complex (1) was characterized by IR and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis. The results show that the Yb(III) ion is nine-coordinated with seven carboxylate oxygen atoms from five different deprotonated APA ligands and two nitrogen atoms from one Phen ligand. Complex (1) forms a 3D supramolecular framework through the - stacking interactions between the Phen aromatic rings. The hirschfeld surface analysis of complex (1) was also calculated. The CO2 photoconversion activity of complex (1) has been performed under UV-vis light irradiation. The complex (1) shows good photocatalytic activity with the yield of CO is closed to 146 mmol/g after three hours of UV-vis light irradiation, the CO selectivity has reached to 97.9%. The Relationship between Brown Adipose Tissue Activity and Neoplastic Status: an 18F-FDG PET/CT Study in the Tropics
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Brown adipose tissue (BAT) has thermogenic potential. For its activation, cold exposure is considered a critical factor though other determinants have also been reported. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between neoplastic status and BAT activity by 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in people living in the tropics, where the influence of outdoor temperature was low.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>18F-FDG PET/CT scans were reviewed and the total metabolic activity (TMA) of identified activated BAT quantified. The distribution and TMA of activated BAT were compared between patients with and without a cancer history. The neoplastic status of patients was scored according to their cancer history and 18F-FDG PET/CT findings. We evaluated the relationships between the TMA of BAT and neoplastic status along with other factors: age, body mass index, fasting blood sugar, gender, and outdoor temperature.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Thirty of 1740 patients had activated BAT. Those with a cancer history had wider BAT distribution (<it>p </it>= 0.043) and a higher TMA (<it>p </it>= 0.028) than those without. A higher neoplastic status score was associated with a higher average TMA. Multivariate analyses showed that neoplastic status was the only factor significantly associated with the TMA of activated BAT (<it>p </it>= 0.016).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Neoplastic status is a critical determinant of BAT activity in patients living in the tropics. More active neoplastic status was associated with more vigorous TMA of BAT.</p
