The Improvement of Reliability of High-k/Metal Gate pMOSFET Device with Various PMA Conditions
The oxygen and nitrogen were shown to diffuse through the TiN layer in the high-k/metal gate devices during PMA. Both the oxygen and nitrogen annealing will reduce the gate leakage current without increasing oxide thickness. The threshold voltages of the devices changed with various PMA conditions. The reliability of the devices, especially for the oxygen annealed devices, was improved after PMA treatments
Quantitative measures of functional outcomes and quality of life in patients with C5 palsy
AbstractBackgroundIt is generally understood that postoperative C5 palsy can occur with anterior or posterior decompression surgery, but functional measures of the palsy have not been well documented. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of C5 palsy in different surgical procedures, examine the correlations between muscle strength, upper extremity functional measures, and health-related quality of life, and to observe potential risk factors contributing to C5 palsy.MethodsOur investigation involved a retrospective study design. A total of 364 patients who underwent decompression surgery were indicated within the selected exclusion criteria. Additionally, 12 C5 palsy patients were recruited. The relationships between the manual muscle test (MMT), the action research arm test (ARAT), the Jebsen test of hand function (JTHF), and the European quality of life-5 dimensions (EQ-5D) were studied, and univariate analyses were performed to search possible risk factors and recovery investigation.ResultsThe data analyzed in the 12 cases and C5 palsy incidences (3.3%) were: 0.7% in anterior procedures (n = 2), 8.8% in posterior procedures (n = 6), and 36.4% in combined procedures (n = 4). Moderate-to-high correlations were observed between the ARAT, JTHF, EQ-5D visual analog scale scores, and MMT (r = 0.636–0.899). There were significant differences in patient age, etiology of cervical lesion, variable decompression procedures, and the number of decompression levels between the C5 palsy and non-C5 palsy groups. For female patients (p = 0.018) and number of decompression levels (p = 0.028), there were significant differences between the complete recovery and the incomplete recovery groups.ConclusionPatients undergoing combined anterior–posterior decompression surgery had the highest incidence of C5 palsy, and correlations between the ARAT, JTHF, EQ-5D visual analog scale clinical tools, and MMT scores supported these findings. Female status and lower decompression levels could also be predictive factors for complete recovery, although additional research is needed to substantiate these findings

Case Report: Morbihan disease treated with tofacitinib successfully
IntroductionTo date, there is no standard treatment for Morbihan disease. Several studies have reported that Morbihan disease responds well to systemic corticosteroids (prednisone and prednisolone), systemic antibiotics (tetracyclines), antihistamines (ketotifen) and surgical therapy (Lymphaticovenous anastomosis). To our knowledge, Tofacitinib, as a Janus-activated kinase (JAK) inhibitor, plays a vital role in the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. Therefore, Tofacitinib may be a promising medical option for patients with Morbihan disease.Case PresentationThe first case involves a 43-year-old Chinese man who presented a 12-month history of progressive painless swelling of the left upper eyelid. According to the skin biopsy, perivascular dermal edema with dilatation of lymphatic vessels and telangiectasia was observed, accompanied by mixed lymphocyte infiltrate, including histiocytes, plasma cells, and a few eosinophils. The second case involves a Chinese female patient who presented a 2-year history of progressive left-sided facial edema, which was eventually diagnosed as Morbihan disease. The skin biopsy revealed lymphocyte infiltration in the superficial vessels of dermis and some accessories. Based on patients’ clinical presentation, skin biopsy results, and exclusion of differential diagnoses such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), they were diagnosed with Morbihan disease. They were both treated with Tofacitinib (5mg, po twice daily).OutcomesPatient 1 underwent a trial of Tofacitinib at a dosage of 5 mg twice daily for one month, with notable improvement. His edema and erythema present on the left face were alleviated. Patient 1 reduced the dosage of Tofacitinib by half (5mg, once daily) and continued using it for 5 months. During the 6-month follow-up, the facial erythema in the patient subsided, and there was a noticeable improvement in the swelling of the left eyelid compared to before. Patient 2, her lesions gradually improved after one-week treatment. She received a one-month treatment of Tofacitinib, and during the subsequent six-month follow-up, there was no evidence of eruption recurrence.ConclusionWe present the first cases of two patients receiving short-term Tofacitinib as therapy for Morbihan disease and retrieving huge succession. Tofacitinib may be a promising oral alternative for patients with Morbihan disease. However, its safety and efficacy require further assessment through clinical trials
Identification of overexpressed cytokines as serum biomarkers of hepatitis C virus-induced liver fibrosis using bead-based flexible multiple analyte profiling
Hepatic inflammation is the stimulator to activate hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and triggers fibrogenesis. Cytokines are produced during liver inflammation and maybe considered as liver fibrosis biomarker. The aim of this study was to investigate whether cytokines can be used as reliable biomarkers of liver fibrosis using flexible multi-analyte profiling (xMAP). A total of 61 chronic hepatitis C patients with different severity of liver fibrosis were enrolled. Liver biopsy was used as standard to assess the severity of fibrosis according to METAVIR classification. Afterward, 15 samples from healthy controls were analyzed and totally 50 cytokines were screened using flexible multi-analyte profiling to discover differential biomarkers. Finally, levels of protein expressions of individual stages of liver fibrosis were measured. In histological examination, the necroinflammatory score (histology activity index, HAI) was increased from F1 to F4 stage in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected patients, indicating that inflammation was accompanied with the progression of liver fibrosis. Using flexible multi-analyte profiling, four serum cytokines, including IFN-α2 (p=0.023), GRO-α (p=0.013), SCF (p=0.047) and SDF-1α p=0.024), were identified under antibody specific recognition and elevated with HAI score. This study reveals the relationship between cytokines and liver fibrosis, and demonstrated that IFN-α2, GRO-α, SCF and SDF-1 α may be used as biomarkers to predict liver fibrosis. The overexpressed cytokines may play a role in the progression of liver fibrosis and deserves further investigation. Keywords: Cytokine, flexible multi-analyte profiling, hepatitis C virus, liver fibrosisAfrican Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 11(29), pp. 7535-7541, 29 April, 201
Source attack of decoy-state quantum key distribution using phase information
Quantum key distribution (QKD) utilizes the laws of quantum mechanics to
achieve information-theoretically secure key generation. This field is now
approaching the stage of commercialization, but many practical QKD systems
still suffer from security loopholes due to imperfect devices. In fact,
practical attacks have successfully been demonstrated. Fortunately, most of
them only exploit detection-side loopholes which are now closed by the recent
idea of measurement-device-independent QKD. On the other hand, little attention
is paid to the source which may still leave QKD systems insecure. In this work,
we propose and demonstrate an attack that exploits a source-side loophole
existing in qubit-based QKD systems using a weak coherent state source and
decoy states. Specifically, by implementing a linear-optics
unambiguous-state-discrimination measurement, we show that the security of a
system without phase randomization --- which is a step assumed in conventional
security analyses but sometimes neglected in practice --- can be compromised.
We conclude that implementing phase randomization is essential to the security
of decoy-state QKD systems under current security analyses.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
