Real time teletext broadcast system performance enhancement using ghost rows

    Get PDF
Teletext is a one way broadcast system which provides a variety of services to its users. A one way broadcast system is attractive because a single transmission of a piece of information satisfies all potential users of that information. The main drawback of these types of systems is that a user must wait until the required information arrives. Therefore, the access time is an important consideration in the design of broadcast teletext systems. In addition, another important factor, information update delay, is very significant in real time broadcast teletext. The shortening of this delay is important.for real time applications especially for systems broadcasting financial information. In this paper, we propose to use the ghost rows together with the storage capabilities of modern terminals to shorten both the access time and the update delay. A queueing model is developed to analyse the performance of this new system. ©1997 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    A Fast Signal-Dependent Time-Frequency Representation

    Get PDF
In last few years, in order to overcome same limitations of the short time Fourier transform (STFT), while avoiding the cross-terms that make the Wigner distribution difficult to interpret, some signal-dependent time-frequency representations (SDTFR) have been proposed. In this paper, the authors introduce a computationally efficient signal-dependent time-frequency method which is suitable for on-line analysis. This SDTFR uses a Gaussian window (GW) similar to STFT, but varies the parameter σ of the GW with time to achieve high signal concentration and high resolution in time. The parameter σ can be automatically calculated by the slope of instantaneous frequency (IF) and instantaneous bandwidth (IB) at that time.published_or_final_versio

Teletext data change detection and noiseless data compression

    Get PDF
Full Channel teletext system is a high speed data broadcasting system. Pages of information are broadcast in a cyclic manner. The detection of data change in the information pages is necessary for data analysis, database update and retransmission. Lossless data compression is also necessary to enhance the data throughput in rebroadcasting and to reduce the storage requirement. Performing data change detection and data compression in real time using a software approach in a small machine is impossible for such high speed data. In this paper, we describe the algorithms that are suitable for hardware implementation for both data change detection and noiseless data compression.published_or_final_versio

A study of network-based kernel methods on protein-protein interaction for protein functions prediction

    Get PDF
Predicting protein functions is an important issue in the post-genomic era. In this paper, we studied several network-based kernels including Local Linear Embedding (LLE) kernel method, Diffusion kernel and Laplacian Kernel to uncover the relationship between proteins functions and Protein-Protein Interactions (PPI). We first construct kernels based on PPI networks, we then apply Support Vector Machine (SVM) techniques to classify proteins into different functional groups. 5-fold cross validation is then applied to the selected 359 GO terms to compare the performance of different kernels and guilt-by-association methods including neighbor counting methods and Chisquare methods. Finally we made predictions of functions of some unknown genes and verified the preciseness of our prediction in part by the information of other data source.postprintThe 3rd International Symposium on Optimization and Systems Biology (OSB 2009), Zhangjiajie, China, 20-22 September 2009. 3-D facial anthropometric norms for the southern Chinese

    Get PDF
Session 9 - Integration of Innovations in Teaching and Daily RoutinePURPOSE: Accurate and demographic-specific normative data are required for the precise quantification of dysmorphology when accessing facial deformities. However, normative three-dimensional (3-D) data are not currently available for Chinese faces. The aims of this study were; (1) to create a normative database of facial anthropometric measurements for young adults with southern Chinese ancestry, (2) to develop a 3-D anthropometric analysis scheme applicable for assessing dentofacial deformities and (3) to compare the facial anthropometric measurements of young Chinese males and females …postprin

Peri-operative administration of rectal diclofenac sodium. The effect on renal function in patients undergoing minor orthopaedic surgery

    Get PDF
In a randomized, double-blind study, we administered placebo and diclofenac sodium 100 mg suppositories 1 h pre-operatively and on the first post-operative morning to 22 adult patients undergoing minor orthopaedic surgery. A standardized post-operative intravenous fluid regimen was instituted until oral fluids were tolerated. Renal function was assessed pre-operatively, and on the first and second post-operative days by the measurement of urine output, creatinine, urea, sodium, potassium and NAG (N-acetyl-b-D-glucosaminidase) levels and serum creatinine, urea, sodium and potassium concentrations. On the first postoperative day, the diclofenac group demonstrated a reduced urinary sodium excretion. On the second postoperative day, a reduced urinary NAG/creatinine ratio was observed in the diclofenac group when compared to placebo. We conclude that peri-operative administration of diclofenac causes changes in renal function consistent with prostaglandin inhibition on the first post-operative day but had no lasting adverse effects in this group of patients. Our results reinforce the need for caution when administering this drug in the context of pre-existing renal impairment.published_or_final_versio
