    Incidents of poor welfare on farm in Victoria, Australia, are generally identified during an investigation that follows receipt of a complaint. Using deidentified records of complaints received by the Victoria State Government between 2011 and 2020, this study aimed to describe the source, number and the relationship between rainfall/stock prices and substantiated welfare complaints (SWC). Only incidents involving non-dairy cattle, sheep and goats in extensive farming systems will be considered. The main source of complaints received by the Victorian Government is the general public. Almost half of all complaints were made for cattle (48%), 39% for sheep, 11% for mixed species, and 2% for goats. The number of SWC varied between months, each year and across the different regions of Victoria. The ratio of the actual mean rainfall of the last three seasons to the long-term mean of the last three seasons of rainfall (RL3SR) and livestock prices together were the best predictors of the total number of SWC (adjusted R square value for heavy lamb-RL3SR was highest (0.590), followed by merino lamb-RL3SR (0.588), goat-RL3SR (0.545) and steer-RL3SR (0.478) all were significant (p ≤ 0.05)). The rainfall by region and town were not good predictors of the number of SWC. There was a correlation between rainfall and the number of SWC, possibly due to changes in pasture availability. Favorable seasonal conditions however, were not protective of livestock welfare and it is likely a number of factors may be implicated.</p

    Electro-optic sampling based characterization of broad-band high efficiency THz-FEL

    Extremely high beam-to-radiation energy conversion efficiencies can be obtained in a THz FEL using a strongly tapered helical undulator at the zero-slippage resonant condition, where a circular waveguide is used to match the radiation group velocity to the electron beam longitudinal velocity. In this paper we report on the first electro-optic sampling (EOS) based measurements of the broadband THz FEL radiation pulses emitted in this regime. The THz field waveforms are reconstructed in the spatial and temporal domains using multi-shot and single-shot EOS schemes respectively. The measurements are performed varying the input electron beam energy in the undulator providing insights on the complex dynamics in a waveguide FEL

    Effect of Organic Co-Contaminants on Technetium and Rhenium Speciation and Solubility under Reducing Conditions

    The chemical and biogeochemical reduction of pertechnetate (TcO4-) and perrhenate (ReO4-) have been compared alongside complexation of the reduced species by three anthropogenic ligands relevant to nuclear waste (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), and isosaccharinic acid (ISA)). An HPLC size-exclusion column coupled to ICP-MS was used to separate the species and quantify Tc and Re. During method development, ReO4- showed recalcitrance to direct chemical reduction by Sn(II) under conditions that readily reduced TcO4- and resulted in Tc(IV)−organic complexes. In microcosm experiments of a silty loam soil containing TcO4-, ReO4-, and ISA (3.0 mM), EDTA (0.17 mM), or NTA (2.4 mM), anoxia developed to iron-reducing conditions during the 42 day experimental period. The majority of the TcO4- was reduced to particle-reactive Tc(IV) and removed from solution during nitrate reduction, but there was no chromatographic evidence of Tc(IV)−organic complexes in the porewater. Overall, the excess organic complexants added did not cause a measurable difference in the solubility of Tc(IV) over the control experiments in this organic-rich (12% organic carbon) soil. ReO4- did not undergo reduction, as shown by the constant porewater concentration and the chromatographic data, and thus Re does not function as an analogue for Tc under environmental nitrate- and iron-reducing conditions

    Nutrient Loading through Submarine Groundwater Discharge and Phytoplankton Growth in Monterey Bay, CA

    We quantified groundwater discharge and associated nutrient fluxes to Monterey Bay, California, during the wet and dry seasons using excess <sup>224</sup>Ra as a tracer. Bioassay incubation experiments were conducted to document the response of bloom-forming phytoplankton to submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) input. Our data indicate that the high nutrient content (nitrate and silica) in groundwater can stimulate the growth of bloom-forming phytoplankton. The elevated concentrations of nitrate in groundwater around Monterey Bay are consistent with agriculture, landfill, and rural housing, which are the primary land-uses in the area surrounding the study site. These findings indicate that SGD acts as a continual source of nutrients that can feed bloom-forming phytoplankton at our study site, constituting a nonpoint source of anthropogenic nutrients to Monterey Bay

We derive analytical expressions for the spectral parameter of THz radiation, emitted superradiantly in a rectangular waveguide using a Longitudinal Section Magnetic mode expansion. The results compare well with numerical simulations using UCLA GPTFEL code. GPT simulations of the accelerator e-beam transport show that the chirp provided by a hybrid photocathode RF gun, can produce tight bunching at the undulator site below σ = 100fs. This enables intense superradiant emission up to 3THz, limited by the beam bunching factor. Phase-space analysis of the beam transport indicates that keeping the beam bunching parameter small enough for higher THz frequency operation is limited by the energy spread of the beam in the gun.</p
