The present article is based on the experience of child education teachers in montage of short films carried out in schools in the outskirts of Campinas-SP. These experiences express a path that emerged in the cartographic research developed in the project Lugar-escola e cinema (Place-school and cinema), and led us to rehearse the perspective of montage as ignorant schoolmaster of a pedagogy of cinema. The article begins by indicating the need to distinguish the concepts of editing and montage, due to the singularities of the school context and the way cinema is produced there. Then, it reports and reflects on processes of individual and collective film creation, where montage and editing act distinctly in negotiations between teachers-filmmakers and in learning from and with cinema. Since these processes are as multiple as they are intuitive, the article reports in what way intuition combined with technical knowledge led to a certain type of montage, where the spread of senses and confidence in the viewer play a decisive role in our experience of making-seeing-talking about films in a school cine club.

    Get PDF
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of three growth retardants on the development and yield of dry bean plants. The treatments were control (water), maleic hydrazide (0.09 g a.i. L-1), ethyl-trinexapac (0.5 g a.i. L-1) and propiconazole (0.125 g a.i. L-1). Maleic hydrazide decreased the plant growth rate, resulting in the height reduction (46%). It also inhibited the twining shoot development, thus controlling the vigor excess of this genotype which has indeterminate growth. On the other hand, plants which were treated with ethyl-trinexapac and propiconazole showed the higher heights (from 25 to 52%, respectively), indicating that both compounds provide the plant growth. These compounds also increased the number of pods (48 to 52%) and grains (47 to 102%), when compared to the control. However, ethyltrinexapac and maleic hydrazide decreased 50-grain dry mass (41 to 52%), indicating changes in the photoassimilate partition among plant structures. This change was evidenced by the correlation coefficient of the biomass allocated between the shoots and grains, which was inversely proportional (r=-60.57) and highly significant (p=0.0002). It is concluded that maleic hydrazide is an efficient growth inhibitor of dry bean plants. Propiconazole and ethyl-trinexapac provide the plant growth, and also improve the main yield components. However, ethyl-trinexapac and maleic hydrazide decrease grain biomass

Exploring the Potential of Heterosis to Improve Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Popcorn Plants

    Get PDF
Nitrogen is crucial for plant growth and development, and improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is a viable strategy for reducing dependence on nitrogen inputs and promoting sustainability. While the benefits of heterosis in corn are well known, the physiological mechanisms underlying this phenomenon in popcorn are less understood. We aimed to investigate the effects of heterosis on growth and physiological traits in four popcorn lines and their hybrids under two contrasting nitrogen conditions. We evaluated morpho-agronomic and physiological traits such as leaf pigments, the maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII, and leaf gas exchange. Components associated with NUE were also evaluated. N deprivation caused reductions of up to 65% in terms of plant architecture, 37% in terms of leaf pigments, and 42% in terms of photosynthesis-related traits. Heterosis had significant effects on growth traits, NUE, and foliar pigments, particularly under low soil nitrogen conditions. N-utilization efficiency was found to be the mechanism favoring superior hybrid performance for NUE. Non-additive genetic effects were predominant in controlling the studied traits, indicating that exploring heterosis is the most effective strategy for obtaining superior hybrids to promote NUE. The findings are relevant and beneficial for agro farmers seeking sustainable agricultural practices and improved crop productivity through the optimization of nitrogen utilization

O¬†√≠ndice de Mulamba &¬†Mock e o m√©todo REML/Blup proporcionam os melhores ganhos preditos para a popula√ß√£o UENF 14.The objective of this work was to compare four selection indices and the REML/Blup method in the evaluation of the predicted genetic gains for the characteristics of interest to the breeding program of the UENF¬†14 popcorn. Two hundred full‚ÄĎsib progenies were evaluated in one season, in two locations (North and Northwest Regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), with two replicates, totaling¬†800 observations. The characteristics evaluated were average plant height, average height of first ear insertion, final stand, tipping, stem diameter, prolificacy, grain yield and popping expansion. Among the selection indices tested, Mulamba &¬†Mock‚Äôs provided the best results for selection of full‚ÄĎsib progenies. The REML/Blup method proved to be very efficient, selecting progenies with high relative performance and better predicted genetic gains than those of the selection indices tested. The progenies selected using the REML/Blup method, for highest grain yield, are not the same as those selected for higher popping expansion. The Mulamba & Mock index and the REML/Blup method provide the best predicted gains for the UENF 14 population

Risk factors associated with death in Brazilian children with severe dengue: a case-control study

    Get PDF
Objective: The purpose of this case-control study was to evaluate risk factors associated with death in children with severe dengue. Methods: The clinical condition of hospitalized patients with severe dengue who died (cases, n‚Ää=‚Ää18) was compared with that of hospitalized patients with severe dengue who survived (controls, n‚Ää=‚Ää77). The inclusion criteria for this study were age under 13 years; hospital admission in S√£o Luis, northeastern Brazil; and laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of dengue. Results: Severe bleeding (hemoptysis), a defining criterion for dengue severity, was the factor most strongly associated with death in our study. We also found that epistaxis and persistent vomiting, both included as warning signs in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of dengue, were strongly associated with death. No significant association was observed between any of the laboratory findings and death. Conclusions: The finding that epistaxis and persistent vomiting were also associated with death in children with severe dengue was unexpected and deserves to be explored in future studies. Because intensive care units are often limited in resource-poor settings, any information that can help to distinguish patients with severe dengue with a higher risk to progress to death may be crucial

The objective of this work was to evaluate the phytochemical composition and the antibacterial and antibiotic-modulating activities of the essential oils of Eugenia brasiliensis Lam (OEEb) and Piper mosenii C. DC (OEPm) singly or in association with blue LED (Light-emitting diode) light. The antibacterial and antibiotic-modulatory activities of the essential oils on the activity of aminoglycosides were evaluated to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC, \u3bcg/mL) in the presence or absence of exposure to blue LED light. The chemical analysis showed \u3b1-pinene and bicyclogermacrene as major constituents of OEPm, whereas \u3b1-muurolol was the main compound of OEEb. Both OEEb and OEPm showed MIC 65 512 \u3bcg/mL against the strains under study. However, the association of these oils with the blue LED light enhanced the action of the aminoglycosides amikacin and gentamicin. In conclusion, the association of aminoglycosides with the blue LED light and essential oils was effective against resistant bacteria
