This research used a pre-experimental design with one-group pre-test and post-test design. The researcher chose XI OTKP and XI TB class of SMKS YPSEI Palangka Raya as the research sample utilizing purposive sampling. The researcher applied multiple choice and short answer test as the instrument for data collection. The obtained data were then analyzed using the Paired Sample T-Test in SPSS version 22 at a significance level of 5% (0.05).  The result showed that the Sig. (2 tailed) = 0,001 < 0,05. As a result of Ha was accepted. To summarize, podcasts are an effective medium for teaching listening to students in the eleventh grade at SMKS YPSEI Palangka Raya. However, when implementing the media, a teacher must consider the students\u27 listening habits. By taking into account the students\u27 level of listening habit, a teacher can properly select the medium used to teach listening in order to increase the students\u27 listening talent

    Get PDF
The terms synchronous and asynchronous learnings are becoming trendy nowadays as the full online learning is conducted in all levels of education in order to prevent the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak. Accordingly, it is prominent to investigate students’ perceptions towards synchronous and asynchronous learning based on their experiences in online learning during this pandemic. Survey design was used in this research and the sample were 42 students of English Education Study Program at a public university in Palangka Raya. The data were collected from the responses of questionnaire given to the students. The result indicates that the synchronous and asynchronous activities in online learning gives new experience for the students, and they prefer the combination of both in their online learning instead of having only synchronous or asynchronous meetings most of the time. Synchronous meetings equip the students when dealing with new or complicated concepts and keep their interest in learning while the asynchronous ones give the students their personal pace in learning as they can adjust their time and speed

    Get PDF
There are difficulties faced by students in learning reading of the narrative text, such as difficulties to find details, translating new words, finding main ideas, and making inferences. This research was conducted to see the effect of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) on students reading comprehension of narrative text by applying ‘preview’ for brainstorming, ‘click and clunk’ for translating new words, ‘get the gist’ for finding details, and main ideas, and ‘wrap up’ for making inferences. It is a quasi-experimental research with experimental and control groups. The sample was the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Palangka Raya.  XI MIPA 3 and XI MIPA 2 classes were the experimental and control groups, and each consists of 37 students. Reading comprehension tests were used to collect the data. Since the data were normally distributed, the hypotheses were tested by using the independent sample t-test. The hypothesis testing results show that the obtained sig (2-tailed) was 0.027 and smaller than the probability value of sig. 0.05 (Sig. 0.027 < Sig. 0.05). Therefore, Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. In other words, CSR significantly affects students’ reading comprehension of narrative text

    Get PDF
Flipped learning (FL) is the approach used in this research based on two reasons: firstly, the traditional learning fails to facilitate students’ need for knowledge construction, collaboration, and sufficient practice and feedback in online learning; therefore, the teacher had to use another approach called Flipped Learning. Secondly, Flipped Learning has the potency to facilitate the students’ needs mentioned earlier. This research is a survey research and was conducted in an online Writing Class at the university of Palangka Raya and a questionnaire and interview were the instruments used to collect the data needed. The result shows that the success in implementing the FL could be achieved when the four pillars of FL integrated appropriately in the teaching and learning process.  As the result, the students gave highly positive responses towards FL that it can facilitate their needs in the online writing class during the pandemic as the four pillars are accordingly implemented; therefore, the pre-learning activities, practices, small group discussions and feedbacks are adequately provided through FL

This research aims to develop reading materials in the form of short stories based on Central Kalimantan culture. Reading materials for university level in the form of local content are still limited. In fact, Dayak culture can be an interesting alternative reading material besides providing academic texts to students. Based on the needs analysis, it is known that at the English Education Study Program of Universitas Palangka Raya, there is a need for reading materials that are able to improve reading skills while containing relevant texts with text difficulty levels that are appropriate for student levels. Further, the reading materials should be in accordance with student interests and needs, contain effective learning strategies, and integrate culture or local content. This research applies Developmental Research in accordance with the ADDIE stages (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). Based on the Evaluation, the developed reading materials are in the form of short stories that contain Central Kalimantan cultural aspects embedded in activities, name of people, name of places, and name of food. Writing test and questionnaire were used as the instrument in order to collect the data needed. The researcher applied parametic statistic in form t-test statistic. That was Dependent Sample T-Test to compare the score of pre-test and post-test on one group. The result of this research shows that there was an effect using using greeting card video and imitative writing on writing greeting card. It was provent by the result of the data analysis that was the comparison of pre-test and post-test scores, by using T-Test Statistic Formula. The test statistic result was 0,065, the critical value with 5% significance level and degree freedom (df)=30 was 2042. In this research, the difference between pre-test and post-test scores had an effect because the test statistic value was greater than critical value in Table Critical Value for Students Distribution 0,065<2042 The alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. And also in the questionnaire, most of questions got positive responses which means that the results of the data was supported by the result of the questionnaire. Previous studies have investigated the community's perspectives on local languages’ existence due to exposures to various languages in residential areas or through formal education in secondary schools. However, there is a lack of evidence on the research of university students’ perspectives on local languages’ existence because they are exposed to international languages as a result of learning and the vast development of technology. Therefore, the current study investigates English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' beliefs on local languages' existence in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In order to measure intangibles, survey research with a one-shot design was conducted following the techniques of planning, defining the population, sampling, constructing the instrument, conducting the survey, and processing the data. The participants of this study were university students majoring in English Language Education and the setting of this study was at one public university in Central Kalimantan Province of Indonesia. A questionnaire in the open- and close-ended questions was distributed to collect data. The current study results confirm that the majority of the participants were active users of local languages and were exposed to international languages (English, Korean, Japanese) through education and entertainment. The participants positively viewed the local languages' existence amidst the exposure of international languages because the local languages were still used in daily life and parts of culture that had been inherited for generations. Furthermore, the participants had taken action to preserve their local languages by continuously using local languages in their family and friendship domains both in the real world and through social media
