AimTo evaluate the correlation between tic disorders and allergies and to inform strategies for the treatment and prevention of tic disorders.MethodsWe conducted online searches of the MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, CNKI, CBM, WanFang, and VIP Information databases. Case-control studies and cohort studies related to tic disorders and allergic conditions were searched. Two researchers screened the literature, extracted data, and evaluated quality in strict accordance with the predetermined retrieval strategy and inclusion criteria. Finally, RevMan 5.4 software was used to conduct a meta-analysis. We used the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) approach to rating the certainty of evidence about each allergy outcome as high, moderate, low, or very low.ResultsWe obtained seven eligible studies involving eight allergic conditions. The following allergic conditions were significantly associated with the presence of a tic disorder: asthma (OR = 1.90, 95% CI = 1.57–2.30, P ConclusionThe occurrence of tic disorders may be associated with the presence of certain allergic disorders. FTIR Characterization of Water–Polymer Interactions in Superacid Polymers
The
OD stretch of dilute HOD in H<sub>2</sub>O absorbed in a series
of sulfonated syndiotactic polyÂ(styrene) and sulfonated polyÂ(sulfone)
membranes was studied using FTIR spectroscopy to measure how the character
of the sulfonate head group and the backbone polarity influenced the
water–membrane interactions. Using a three-state model, the
OD stretch yielded information about the populations of absorbed water
participating in hydrogen bonds with polymer-tethered sulfonate groups,
water in an intermediate state, or water hydrogen bonding with other
water molecules. The perfluoroalkyl sulfonate moiety, which behaves
as a superacid, consistently displayed the largest fraction of head-group-associated
water due to its strong acidic character. Measurements of the OD stretch
gave insight into the strength of the hydrogen bonds formed between
water and the sulfonate groups. Water associated with the superacid
displayed an OD stretch peak position that was blueshifted by 39 cm<sup>–1</sup> compared to the aryl-sulfonate-associated water with
an OD stretching frequency that was centered at 2547 cm<sup>–1</sup>. The polarity of the polymer backbone also affected the OD stretch
peak position. As hydration increased, the OD peak stretching frequency
in polyÂ(styrene)-based membranes displayed a red shift from 2566 to
2553 cm<sup>–1</sup>, whereas there was no OD peak maxima shift
in polyÂ(sulfone)-based membranes due to the greater amount of intermediate
water in the more polar polyÂ(sulfone) backbone system
Association between interleukin-6 and preterm birth: a meta-analysis
Interleukin (IL)-6 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays an important role in preterm birth (PTB), Several meta-analyses investigated the association between IL-6 and PTB, but definitive conclusion has not yet been achieved. This updated meta-analysis aimed to ascertain the association between IL-6 and PTB by examining IL-6 levels in both normal birth and PTB groups. Prospective cohort studies were retrieved in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane library from their inception until 18 February 2020. The primary outcome was the association between IL-6 and PTB, and secondary outcomes were the association between IL-6 and spontaneous PTB. Nine studies involving 1904 patients were included. Overall, IL-6 from different sample types (maternal blood, amniotic fluid and cervicovaginal fluid) was associated with PTB (standard mean difference [SMD]: 0.86, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.32 to 1.39, p p p = 0.022), but not significant in maternal blood (SMD: −0.11, 95%CI: −0.57 to 0.34, p = 0.623).
