Simultaneous measurement of distance and thickness of a thin metal plate with an electromagnetic sensor using a simplified model.
This paper presents a simplified model which can describe the inductance change when an air-core coil is placed next to a thin nonmagnetic metallic plate. The model has two independent parameters and is valid for a range of thickness, conductivity, and lift-offs. Use of this new relationship provides a fast and accurate method to measure the distance and thickness simultaneously. Measurements made for a sample coil next to thin copper and aluminum plates of various thicknesses verified the theory and the proposed method. © 2004 IEEE
Criteria for reliable entanglement quantification with finite data
We propose one and a half criteria for determining how many measurements are
needed to quantify entanglement reliably. We base these criteria on Bayesian
analysis of measurement results, and apply our methods to four-qubit
entanglement, but generalizations to more qubits are straightforward.Comment: >4
Single-Event Handbury-Brown-Twiss Interferometry
Large spatial density fluctuations in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can
come from many sources: initial transverse density fluctuations, non-central
collisions, phase transitions, surface tension, and fragmentations. The common
presence of some of these sources in high-energy heavy-ion collisions suggests
that large scale density fluctuations may often occur. The detection of large
density fluctuations by single-event Hanbury-Brown-Twiss interferometry in
heavy-ion collisions will provide useful information on density fluctuations
and the dynamics of heavy-ion collisions.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, invited talk presented at the XI International

Acylsulfonamide safety-catch linker : promise and limitations for solid-phase oligosaccharide synthesis
Safety-catch linkers are useful for solid-phase oligosaccharide synthesis as they are orthogonal to many common protective groups. A new acylsulfonamide safety-catch linker was designed, synthesized and employed during glycosylations using an automated carbohydrate synthesizer. The analysis of the cleavage products revealed shortcomings for oligosaccharide synthesis
Reconstruction of coded aperture images
Balanced correlation method and the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) were implemented to reconstruct a laboratory X-ray source as imaged by a Uniformly Redundant Array (URA) system. Although the MEM method has advantages over the balanced correlation method, it is computationally time consuming because of the iterative nature of its solution. Massively Parallel Processing, with its parallel array structure is ideally suited for such computations. These preliminary results indicate that it is possible to use the MEM method in future coded-aperture experiments with the help of the MPP
