Language attitudes and religion: Kurdish Alevis in the UK

    Get PDF
In this article I report on results of a Matched Guise Tests (MGT) study investigating attitudes towards Bohtan (BHKr) and Maraş Kurmanji (MRKr) spoken among the UK diaspora. I focus on BHKr, which I use to refer to the Kurmanji that is identified as ā€œgood Kurmanjiā€, also referred to as ā€œacademicā€/ ā€œproperā€, and MRKr to refer to the Kurmanji that is referred to as ā€œbad Kurmanjiā€ by Kurmanji speakers in the UK (Author 2018). The MGT, and questions pertaining to perceptual dialectology such as respondents’ perceptions of region, religion, gender and class in this study, show that attitudes towards what is perceived as BHKr and MRKr differ significantly. By concentrating on language attitudes towards Kurmanji which have never been studied in the UK context before, this paper investigates negative and positive evaluations of both BHKr and MRKr in relation to religious affiliation

Computation of option greeks under hybrid stochastic volatility models via Malliavin calculus

    Get PDF
This study introduces computation of option sensitivities (Greeks) using the Malliavin calculus under the assumption that the underlying asset and interest rate both evolve from a stochastic volatility model and a stochastic interest rate model, respectively. Therefore, it integrates the recent developments in the Malliavin calculus for the computation of Greeks: Delta, Vega, and Rho and it extends the method slightly. The main results show that Malliavin calculus allows a running Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm to present numerical implementations and to illustrate its effectiveness. The main advantage of this method is that once the algorithms are constructed, they can be used for numerous types of option, even if their payoff functions are not differentiable.Comment: Published at https://doi.org/10.15559/18-VMSTA100 in the Modern Stochastics: Theory and Applications (https://www.i-journals.org/vtxpp/VMSTA) by VTeX (http://www.vtex.lt/

Migration of highly educated Belgian and Dutch Turks : ā€˜Young Brains’ of Turkey

    Get PDF
The aim of this research is to reflect the social imaginaries of highly educated Turkish migrants on their migration to their parents’ home country. Based on fieldwork and interviews with 19 Turkish-origin Belgian and Dutch citizens in a post-migration setting, this study demonstrates their pre- and postmigration lifestyles, and propounds the way they attribute meaning to their movement. The gap between personal wills of the actors of migration and expectations of them clearly shows how policies are flawed in their considerations of socio-cultural and economic development through ā€˜development agents’

Turkey's relations and energy cooperation with the BESC

    No full text
Turkey is conducting an increasingly active energy diplomacy and in order to understand the role and strategies of Ankara in energy geopolitics, it is important to apprehend Turkey's behaviours at international level. In this respect, Turkey's energy ties with international (energy) organizations have key importance. Hence, this paper seeks to analyze the energy relationship between Ankara and the BSEC. Turkey attends activities of the organization in order to increase its visibility at international level, become a leader in the Black Sea region, and boost its political and economic ties with member states. However, due to the limited effectiveness of the organization in general and in the field of energy in particular, its contribution to the Turkish energy sector has remained modest

Harmonic functions, h-transform and large deviations for random walks in random environments in dimensions four and higher

We consider large deviations for nearest-neighbor random walk in a uniformly elliptic i.i.d. environment on Zd\mathbb{Z}^d. There exist variational formulae for the quenched and averaged rate functions IqI_q and IaI_a, obtained by Rosenbluth and Varadhan, respectively. IqI_q and IaI_a are not identically equal. However, when d≄4d\geq4 and the walk satisfies the so-called (T) condition of Sznitman, they have been previously shown to be equal on an open set Aeq\mathcal{A}_{\mathit {eq}}. For every ξ∈Aeq\xi\in\mathcal{A}_{\mathit {eq}}, we prove the existence of a positive solution to a Laplace-like equation involving ξ\xi and the original transition kernel of the walk. We then use this solution to define a new transition kernel via the h-transform technique of Doob. This new kernel corresponds to the unique minimizer of Varadhan's variational formula at ξ\xi. It also corresponds to the unique minimizer of Rosenbluth's variational formula, provided that the latter is slightly modified.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/10-AOP556 the Annals of Probability (http://www.imstat.org/aop/) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (http://www.imstat.org

Construction a new generating function of Bernstein type polynomials

Main purpose of this paper is to reconstruct generating function of the Bernstein type polynomials. Some properties this generating functions are given. By applying this generating function, not only derivative of these polynomials but also recurrence relations of these polynomials are found. Interpolation function of these polynomials is also constructed via Mellin Transformation. This function interpolates these polynomials at negative integers which are given explicitly. Moreover, relations between these polynomials, the generalized Stirling numbers, and Bernoulli polynomials of higher order are given. Furthermore some applications associated with B\'ezier curve are given.Comment: 7 page
