First Author Advantage: Citation Labeling in Research
Citations among research papers, and the networks they form, are the primary
object of study in scientometrics. The act of making a citation reflects the
citer's knowledge of the related literature, and of the work being cited. We
aim to gain insight into this process by studying citation keys: user-chosen
labels to identify a cited work. Our main observation is that the first listed
author is disproportionately represented in such labels, implying a strong

Scienceography: the study of how science is written
Scientific literature has itself been the subject of much scientific study,
for a variety of reasons: understanding how results are communicated, how ideas
spread, and assessing the influence of areas or individuals. However, most
prior work has focused on extracting and analyzing citation and stylistic
patterns. In this work, we introduce the notion of 'scienceography', which
focuses on the writing of science. We provide a first large scale study using
data derived from the arXiv e-print repository. Crucially, our data includes
the "source code" of scientific papers-the LaTEX source-which enables us to
study features not present in the "final product", such as the tools used and
private comments between authors. Our study identifies broad patterns and
trends in two example areas-computer science and mathematics-as well as
highlighting key differences in the way that science is written in these
fields. Finally, we outline future directions to extend the new topic of

Novel nanoparticle detection method using electrochemical device based on anodic aluminum oxide nanopore membrane
AbstractSome investigations suggest that nanoparticles are potentially the most dangerous because they can also penetrate deeper into lung tissue than other large particles. However, some researchers declare that the research on security of environmental nanoparticles should be on the basis of the standardization of investigation system. Therefore, it is significant to detect nanoparticles for both environmental evaluation and further treatment. In this paper, a method for iron oxide nanoparticle detection was investigated by a novel electrochemical device based on AAO nanopore membrane and preliminary results was taken out which may create novel avenues and applications for nanoparticle detection
Who is Here: Location Aware Face Recognition
Abstract Face recognition has many challenges. For instance, the illumination, various facial expression and different viewpoints add difficulties to identify the same person from a bunch of images. Searching over a huge set of images will only amplify such difficulties. We introduce the location aware face recognition framework for mobile-taken photos to alleviate the hardness. With the help of location sensor on the mobile devices, we collect images with location information. We propose an algorithm to reduce the search space of face recognition and therefore achieve better accuracy. Photos are clustered by locations on the server. Each location is then associated with a face classifier. Every client can send a "Who is Here" type query to the server by uploading an image with the location. The algorithm on the server will search over the given location and identify the person on the image. Experiments are conducted on mobile devices. The results are quite promising that higher accuracy is achieved and the query can be answered in near real-time
The impact of green technology innovation on global value chain upgrading in China’s equipment manufacturing industry
In recent years, China’s equipment manufacturing industry has been actively embedded in the global value chain (GVC), but pollution emission has become an important factor hindering the industry from climbing to the high-end link of GVC. How to break through this restriction through green technology innovation is exactly urgent for the Chinese government and manufacturers. Therefore, using the panel data of China’s equipment manufacturing industry and its subsectors from 2007 to 2019, this paper constructs an econometric model to investigate the impact of green technology innovation on the GVC upgrading, and further examines the mediating effect through stepwise regression method. The results show that for the full samples of China’s equipment manufacturing industry, there is a U-shaped relationship between green technology innovation and the promotion of GVC status; and for basic metals and metal products manufacturing subsector and transport equipment manufacturing subsector, the conclusion is same with the whole industry; but for machinery equipment manufacturing subsector and electrical, electronic and optical equipment manufacturing subsector, the trend is opposite, that is, an inverted U-shaped relationship which first rises and then declines. Additionally, green technology innovation in China’s equipment manufacturing industry can promote GVC upgrading by reducing its dependence on GVC, optimizing export trade, reducing pollution costs, and promoting green product and process innovation. Based on the above, this paper finally proposes targeted policy implications to provide theoretical basis and experience reference for China’s equipment manufacturing industry to promote the GVC upgrading through green technology innovation
Induction of a torpor-like hypothermic and hypometabolic state in rodents by ultrasound
Torpor is an energy-conserving state in which animals dramatically decrease their metabolic rate and body temperature to survive harsh environmental conditions. Here, we report the noninvasive, precise and safe induction of a torpor-like hypothermic and hypometabolic state in rodents by remote transcranial ultrasound stimulation at the hypothalamus preoptic area (POA). We achieve a long-lasting (\u3e24 h) torpor-like state in mice via closed-loop feedback control of ultrasound stimulation with automated detection of body temperature. Ultrasound-induced hypothermia and hypometabolism (UIH) is triggered by activation of POA neurons, involves the dorsomedial hypothalamus as a downstream brain region and subsequent inhibition of thermogenic brown adipose tissue. Single-nucleus RNA-sequencing of POA neurons reveals TRPM2 as an ultrasound-sensitive ion channel, the knockdown of which suppresses UIH. We also demonstrate that UIH is feasible in a non-torpid animal, the rat. Our findings establish UIH as a promising technology for the noninvasive and safe induction of a torpor-like state
Genome-Wide Mutagenesis of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri Reveals Novel Genetic Determinants and Regulation Mechanisms of Biofilm Formation
Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac) causes citrus canker disease, a major threat to citrus production worldwide. Accumulating evidence suggests that the formation of biofilms on citrus leaves plays an important role in the epiphytic survival of this pathogen prior to the development of canker disease. However, the process of Xac biofilm formation is poorly understood. Here, we report a genome-scale study of Xac biofilm formation in which we identified 92 genes, including 33 novel genes involved in biofilm formation and 7 previously characterized genes, colR, fhaB, fliC, galU, gumD, wxacO, and rbfC, known to be important for Xac biofilm formation. In addition, 52 other genes with defined or putative functions in biofilm formation were identified, even though they had not previously reported been to be associated with biofilm formation. The 92 genes were isolated from 292 biofilm-defective mutants following a screen of a transposon insertion library containing 22,000 Xac strain 306 mutants. Further analyses indicated that 16 of the novel genes are involved in the production of extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) and/or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), 7 genes are involved in signaling and regulatory pathways, and 5 genes have unknown roles in biofilm formation. Furthermore, two novel genes, XAC0482, encoding a haloacid dehalogenase-like phosphatase, and XAC0494 (designated as rbfS), encoding a two-component sensor protein, were confirmed to be biofilm-related genes through complementation assays. Our data demonstrate that the formation of mature biofilm requires EPS, LPS, both flagellum-dependent and flagellum-independent cell motility, secreted proteins and extracellular DNA. Additionally, multiple signaling pathways are involved in Xac biofilm formation. This work is the first report on a genome-wide scale of the genetic processes of biofilm formation in plant pathogenic bacteria. The report provides significant new information about the genetic determinants and regulatory mechanism of biofilm formation
