Effective Maxwell equations from time-dependent density functional theory
The behavior of interacting electrons in a perfect crystal under macroscopic
external electric and magnetic fields is studied. Effective Maxwell equations
for the macroscopic electric and magnetic fields are derived starting from
time-dependent density functional theory. Effective permittivity and
permeability coefficients are obtained.Comment: 36 page

Finding High-Dimensional D-OptimalDesigns for Logistic Models via Differential Evolution
D-optimal designs are frequently used in controlled experiments to obtain the most accurateestimate of model parameters at minimal cost. Finding them can be a challenging task, especially whenthere are many factors in a nonlinear model. As the number of factors becomes large and interact withone another, there are many more variables to optimize and the D-optimal design problem becomes highdimensionaland non-separable. Consequently, premature convergence issues arise. Candidate solutions gettrapped in local optima and the classical gradient-based optimization approaches to search for the D-optimaldesigns rarely succeed. We propose a specially designed version of differential evolution (DE) which is arepresentative gradient-free optimization approach to solve such high-dimensional optimization problems. The proposed specially designed DE uses a new novelty-based mutation strategy to explore the variousregions in the search space. The exploration of the regions will be carried out differently from the previouslyexplored regions and the diversity of the population can be preserved. The proposed novelty-based mutationstrategy is collaborated with two common DE mutation strategies to balance exploration and exploitationat the early or medium stage of the evolution. Additionally, we adapt the control parameters of DE as theevolution proceeds. Using logistic models with several factors on various design spaces as examples, oursimulation results show our algorithm can find D-optimal designs efficiently and the algorithm outperformsits competitors. As an application, we apply our algorithm and re-design a 10-factor car refueling experimentwith discrete and continuous factors and selected pairwise interactions. Our proposed algorithm was able toconsistently outperform the other algorithms and find a more efficient D-optimal design for the problem
A Neural Stochastic Volatility Model
In this paper, we show that the recent integration of statistical models with
deep recurrent neural networks provides a new way of formulating volatility
(the degree of variation of time series) models that have been widely used in
time series analysis and prediction in finance. The model comprises a pair of
complementary stochastic recurrent neural networks: the generative network
models the joint distribution of the stochastic volatility process; the
inference network approximates the conditional distribution of the latent
variables given the observables. Our focus here is on the formulation of
temporal dynamics of volatility over time under a stochastic recurrent neural
network framework. Experiments on real-world stock price datasets demonstrate
that the proposed model generates a better volatility estimation and prediction
that outperforms mainstream methods, e.g., deterministic models such as GARCH
and its variants, and stochastic models namely the MCMC-based model
\emph{stochvol} as well as the Gaussian process volatility model \emph{GPVol},

CoLight: Learning Network-level Cooperation for Traffic Signal Control
Cooperation among the traffic signals enables vehicles to move through
intersections more quickly. Conventional transportation approaches implement
cooperation by pre-calculating the offsets between two intersections. Such
pre-calculated offsets are not suitable for dynamic traffic environments. To
enable cooperation of traffic signals, in this paper, we propose a model,
CoLight, which uses graph attentional networks to facilitate communication.
Specifically, for a target intersection in a network, CoLight can not only
incorporate the temporal and spatial influences of neighboring intersections to
the target intersection, but also build up index-free modeling of neighboring
intersections. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to use graph
attentional networks in the setting of reinforcement learning for traffic
signal control and to conduct experiments on the large-scale road network with
hundreds of traffic signals. In experiments, we demonstrate that by learning
the communication, the proposed model can achieve superior performance against
the state-of-the-art methods.Comment: 10 pages. Proceedings of the 28th ACM International on Conference on

IRGAN: A Minimax Game for Unifying Generative and Discriminative Information Retrieval Models
This paper provides a unified account of two schools of thinking in
information retrieval modelling: the generative retrieval focusing on
predicting relevant documents given a query, and the discriminative retrieval
focusing on predicting relevancy given a query-document pair. We propose a game
theoretical minimax game to iteratively optimise both models. On one hand, the
discriminative model, aiming to mine signals from labelled and unlabelled data,
provides guidance to train the generative model towards fitting the underlying
relevance distribution over documents given the query. On the other hand, the
generative model, acting as an attacker to the current discriminative model,
generates difficult examples for the discriminative model in an adversarial way
by minimising its discrimination objective. With the competition between these
two models, we show that the unified framework takes advantage of both schools
of thinking: (i) the generative model learns to fit the relevance distribution
over documents via the signals from the discriminative model, and (ii) the
discriminative model is able to exploit the unlabelled data selected by the
generative model to achieve a better estimation for document ranking. Our
experimental results have demonstrated significant performance gains as much as
23.96% on Precision@5 and 15.50% on MAP over strong baselines in a variety of
applications including web search, item recommendation, and question answering.Comment: 12 pages; appendix adde
Impact of multiple time delays on bifurcation of a class of fractional nearest-neighbor coupled neural networks
In this paper, the impacts of multiple time delays on bifurcation of a class of fractional nearest-neighbor coupled neural networks are considered. Firstly, the sum of time delays is selected as a parameter, and the fractional nearest-neighbor coupled neural network model is linearized to obtain the corresponding characteristic equation. Then, utilizing stability and bifurcation theory of fractional-order delay differential equations, we investigate the effect of time delays on the system’s stability and bifurcations. The results show that when the time lag exceeds the critical value, the system will lose stability and generate Hopf bifurcation. Finally, the correctness of the conclusions in this paper is verified through numerical simulation
Lifelong Sequential Modeling with Personalized Memorization for User Response Prediction
User response prediction, which models the user preference w.r.t. the
presented items, plays a key role in online services. With two-decade rapid
development, nowadays the cumulated user behavior sequences on mature Internet
service platforms have become extremely long since the user's first
registration. Each user not only has intrinsic tastes, but also keeps changing
her personal interests during lifetime. Hence, it is challenging to handle such
lifelong sequential modeling for each individual user. Existing methodologies
for sequential modeling are only capable of dealing with relatively recent user
behaviors, which leaves huge space for modeling long-term especially lifelong
sequential patterns to facilitate user modeling. Moreover, one user's behavior
may be accounted for various previous behaviors within her whole online
activity history, i.e., long-term dependency with multi-scale sequential
patterns. In order to tackle these challenges, in this paper, we propose a
Hierarchical Periodic Memory Network for lifelong sequential modeling with
personalized memorization of sequential patterns for each user. The model also
adopts a hierarchical and periodical updating mechanism to capture multi-scale
sequential patterns of user interests while supporting the evolving user
behavior logs. The experimental results over three large-scale real-world
datasets have demonstrated the advantages of our proposed model with
significant improvement in user response prediction performance against the
state-of-the-arts.Comment: SIGIR 2019. Reproducible codes and datasets:

Numerical Solutions of 2-D Steady Incompressible Flow in a Driven Skewed Cavity
The benchmark test case for non-orthogonal grid mesh, the "driven skewed
cavity flow", first introduced by Demirdzic et al. (1992, IJNMF, 15, 329) for
skew angles of alpha=30 and alpha=45, is reintroduced with a more variety of
skew angles. The benchmark problem has non-orthogonal, skewed grid mesh with
skew angle (alpha). The governing 2-D steady incompressible Navier-Stokes
equations in general curvilinear coordinates are solved for the solution of
driven skewed cavity flow with non-orthogonal grid mesh using a numerical
method which is efficient and stable even at extreme skew angles. Highly
accurate numerical solutions of the driven skewed cavity flow, solved using a
fine grid (512x512) mesh, are presented for Reynolds number of 100 and 1000 for
skew angles ranging between 15<alpha<165
