Ownership structure and new product development in transnational corporations in China
This paper examines the relationship between the ownership structure and new product development (NPD) at the affiliates of transnational corporations in China. Seven research hypotheses are tested on a panel data set covering 10,000 manufacturing firms with foreign involvement
for the period 1998-2001. The results from probit and tobit models show that contractual joint ventures, equity joint ventures and joint stock enterprises are better organizational forms than wholly owned enterprises
for increasing both the probability and intensity of NPD. We also find that ventures with OECD participation are more likely to be involved in NPD than those with participation by “overseas” Chinese TNCs
Three-way noiseless signal splitting in a parametric amplifier with quantum correlation
We demonstrate that a phase-insensitive parametric amplifier, coupled to a
quantum correlated source, can be used as a quantum information tap for
noiseless three-way signal splitting. We find that the output signals are
amplified noiselessly in two of the three output ports while the other can more
or less keep its original input size without adding noise. This scheme is able
to cascade and scales up for efficient information distribution in an optical
network. Furthermore, we find this scheme satisfies the criteria for a
non-ideal quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement and thus can serve as a QND
measurement device. With two readouts correlated to the input, we find this
scheme also satisfies the criterion for sequential QND measurement
Spectral properties of photon pairs generated by spontaneous four wave mixing in inhomogeneous photonic crystal fibers
The photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is one of the excellent media for generating
photon pairs via spontaneous four wave mixing. Here we study how the
inhomogeneity of PCFs affect the spectral properties of photon pairs from both
the theoretical and experimental aspects. The theoretical model shows that the
photon pairs born in different place of the inhomogeneous PCF are coherently
superposed, and a modulation in the broadened spectrum of phase matching
function will appear, which prevents the realization of spectral factorable
photon pairs. In particular, the inhomogeneity induced modulation can be
examined by measuring the spectrum of individual signal or idler field when the
asymmetric group velocity matching is approximately fulfilled. Our experiments
are performed by tailoring the spectrum of pulsed pump to satisfy the specified
phase matching condition. The observed spectra of individual signal photons,
which are produced from different segments of the 1.9 m inhomogeneous PCF,
agree with the theoretical predictions. The investigations are not only useful
for fiber based quantum state engineering, but also provide a dependable method
to test the homogeneity of PCF.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev.
PM2.5-Related Health Economic Benefits Evaluation Based on Air Improvement Action Plan in Wuhan City, Middle China
On the basis of PM2.5 data of the national air quality monitoring sites, local population data, and baseline all-cause mortality rate, PM2.5-related health economic benefits of the Air Improvement Action Plan implemented in Wuhan in 2013–2017 were investigated using health-impact and valuation functions. Annual avoided premature deaths driven by the average concentration of PM2.5 decrease were evaluated, and the economic benefits were computed by using the value of statistical life (VSL) method. Results showed that the number of avoided premature deaths in Wuhan are 21,384 (95% confidence interval (CI): 15,004 to 27,255) during 2013–2017, due to the implementation of the Air Improvement Action Plan. According to the VSL method, the obtained economic benefits of Huangpi, Wuchang, Hongshan, Xinzhou, Jiang’an, Hanyang, Jiangxia, Qiaokou, Jianghan, Qingshan, Caidian, Dongxihu, and Hannan District were 8.55, 8.19, 8.04, 7.39, 5.78, 4.84, 4.37, 4.04, 3.90, 3.30, 2.87, 2.42, and 0.66 billion RMB (1 RMB = 0.1417 USD On 14 October 2019), respectively. These economic benefits added up to 64.35 billion RMB (95% CI: 45.15 to 82.02 billion RMB), accounting for 4.80% (95% CI: 3.37% to 6.12%) of the total GDP of Wuhan in 2017. Therefore, in the process of formulating a regional air quality improvement scheme, apart from establishing hierarchical emission-reduction standards and policies, policy makers should give integrated consideration to the relationship between regional economic development, environmental protection and residents’ health benefits. Furthermore, for improving air quality, air quality compensation mechanisms can be established on the basis of the status quo and trends of air quality, population distribution, and economic development factors
An all-fiber source of pulsed twin beams at telecom band for quantum communication
Motivated by the pursuit of a simple system to produce non-classical light
sources for long- distance quantum communication, we generate for the first
time an all-fiber source of pulsed twin beams in 1550 nm band by using a high
gain fiber optical parametric amplifier. The noise of intensity difference of
the twin beams is below the shot noise limit by 3.1 dB (10.4 dB after
correction for losses). A detailed study reveals a number of limiting factors
for higher noise reduction. Therefore, further noise reduction will be feasible
once care is taken for these limiting factors.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
