Description of the Fifth Instar of \u3ci\u3eApache Degeerii\u3c/i\u3e (Homoptera: Fulgoroidea: Derbidae)

(excerpt) Apache degeerii (Kirby) ranges from Maine south to Florida and west to Iowa and Texas; it has also been recorded from British Columbia and Washington (Metcalf 1945. Wilson and McPherson 1980). This derbid has been recorded from oak, beech, maple, and hickory (Swezey 19(4); otherwise no information on its biology is available

Description of the Fifth Instar of \u3ci\u3eEpiptera Opaca\u3c/i\u3e (Homoptera: Fulgoroidea: Achilidae)

(excerpt) Epiptera opaca (Say) ranges from Quebec south to Georgia and west to Ontario and Mississippi; it has also been recorded from British Columbia (Beirne 1950, Wilson and McPherson 1980). This achilid has been associated with pines (Hepburn 1967); otherwise no information on the biology of this species is available. Based on observations of E. fusca (Walker), Hepburn (1967) noted that the immature stages of all species of Epiptera probably live beneath the loose bark of dead trees, presumably feeding on fungal hyphae

PUTTING CRAVING INTO CONTEXT: EFFECTS OF PERCEIVED SMOKING OPPORTUNITY ON THE NEURAL RESPONSE TO CIGARETTE CUE EXPOSURE

Recent years have seen the emergence of research applying functional neuroimaging to the study of cue-elicited drug craving. This research has begun to identify a distributed system of brain activity during drug craving. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine the effects of smoking expectancy on the neural response to neutral (e.g., roll of tape) and smoking-related (holding a cigarette) stimuli in male cigarette smokers deprived of nicotine for 8 hours. As predicted, several brain regions exhibited differential activation during cigarette versus neutral cue exposure. Moreover, instructions about smoking opportunity affected cue-elicited activation in several regions. These results highlight the importance of perceived drug availability in the neurobiological response to drug cues

Tymbal Morphology and Co-ccurrence of \u3ci\u3eSpartina\u3c/i\u3e Sap-Feeding Insects (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha)

    Get PDF
The exoskeletal morphology of the structures associated with the production of substrate vibrations used for communication was examined for members of three guilds of sap-feeding insects on the cordgrasses Spartina alterniflora Loisel, S. patens (Aiton) Muhl., and S. pectinata Link (Poaceae: Chloridoidea). Measurements of the second abdominal sternite and its apodemes, the ā€œtymbal,ā€ were made for the males of 14 species of planthoppers and 2 species of leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha: Caliscelidae, Cicadellidae, Delphacidae, Derbidae). Morphometric comparisons revealed significant differences among the insect species on each of the cordgrass species. If tymbal morphology reflects definitive features of the vibrational signals then coexistence by the members of each sap-feeding guild is likely fostered by partitioning the ā€œsubstrate resource.ā€ Tymbal morphology may be a valuable tool for determining the presence of sibling species and for providing insights regarding behavior, ecology, and evolution of these insects

Abductive two-dimensionalism: a new route to the a priori identification of necessary truths

    Get PDF
Epistemic two-dimensional semantics, advocated by Chalmers and Jackson, among others, aims to restore the link between necessity and a priority seemingly broken by Kripke, by showing how armchair access to semantic intensions provides a basis for knowledge of necessary a posteriori truths. The most compelling objections to E2D are that, for one or other reason, the requisite intensions are not accessible from the armchair. As we substantiate here, existing versions of E2D are indeed subject to such access-based objections. But, we moreover argue, the difficulty lies not with E2D but with the typically presupposed conceiving-based epistemology of intensions. Freed from that epistemology, and given the right alternativeā€”one where inference to the best explanation provides the operative guide to intensionsā€”E2D can meet access-based objections, and fulfill its promise of restoring the desirable link between necessity and a priority. This result serves as a central application of Biggs and Wilson, according to which abduction is an a priori mode of inference

Preface to the special issue on "recent developments and new directions in thin-film flow"

Thin ļ¬lms of ļ¬‚uids are of central importance in numerous industrial, biomedical, geophysical and domestic applications, and display a rich and varied range of behaviours, including pattern formation, dewetting, rupture and ļ¬nite-time blow up. As well as being of great interest in their own right, thin-ļ¬lm ļ¬‚ows provide a ā€œtest bedā€ for research into a variety of challenging nonlinear problems in engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics. As a consequence, research by a wide range of scientists, using a variety of analytical, numerical and experimental techniques on many different aspects of thin-ļ¬lm ļ¬‚ow, has grown significantly in recent years, as novel applications have continued to appear and increasingly sophisticated theoretical and experimental techniques have been developed
