We hope you will find this the 2002 fall edition of the CHA bulletin enjoyable and informative. It is our first for us (Peter and John). It has been a quick but rewarding learning experience, and we would like to thank Joanne Mineault for her enthusiasm and assistance.

CHA visit to the War Museum

During CHA council meetings last November of 2006 CHA council members were given a first-rate tour of the recently completed Canadian War Museum, located on the LeBreton Flats, a plain of wetland and former industrial land adjascent to networks of mill races and hydro dams on the right bank of the Ottawa River. The tour was given by CWM World War. One curator and historian Tim Cook. The tour allowed visitors to take in the remarkable breadth, chronological and thematic, of the CWM permanent exhibition, from the pre-contact(native) ways of fighting to the Seven Years War and all the way up to and well into the 20th century marked by two World Wars, the Korean War etc. Dr. Cook shared with visitors the challenges of preparing a display — what works, what does not work

Mars surface based factory. Phase 2, task 1C: Computer control of a water treatment system to support a space colony on Mars

In a continued effort to design a surface based factory on Mars for the production of oxygen and water, a preliminary study was made of the surface and atmospheric composition on Mars and determined the mass densities of the various gases in the Martian atmosphere. Based on the initial studies, oxygen and water were determined to be the two products that could be produced economically under the Martian conditions. Studies were also made on present production techniques to obtain water and oxygen. Analyses were made to evaluate the current methods of production that were adaptable to the Martian conditions. Even though the initial effort was the production of oxygen and water, it was found necessary to produce some diluted gases that can be mixed with the oxygen produced to constitute 'breathable' air. The conceptual design of a breathable air manufacturing system, a means of drilling for underground water, and storage of water for future use were completed. The design objective was the conceptual design of an integrated system for the supply of quality water for biological consumption, farming, residential and industrial use

Urbanization, Colonization and Underdevelopment in the Bas-Saint-Laurent : Fraserville and the Témiscouata in the Late Nineteenth Century

This paper is based on the premise that regional differentiation is intrinsic to the formation of contemporary capitalist society. Informed by current dependence theory, we discuss the applicability of the agri-forestry concept to the experience of one Bas-Saint-Laurent sub-region (the Témiscouata) during the late XIXth Century period. The agri-forestry System, it is argued, impoverished agriculture and fragmented the county economy between a rural forestry sector and an urban railroad one. It was, in short, the prime agency of underdevelopment in the Bas-Saint-Laurent
