Cognitive manipulation of emotional and non-emotional information in working memory of patients with depression: a rigid processing style
IntroductionCognitive psychology is one of the important perspectives to understand depression. Compared with previous studies, recent researchers increasingly focused on the exploration of the comprehensive cognitive process of patients with depression. The cognitive operation ability of working memory is an important comprehensive cognitive process, which reflects how individuals establish representations. This is the basis for the formation of experience and schema. The purpose of this study is to explore whether there are abnormalities in cognitive manipulation in patients with depression, and to analyze its possible role in the pathogenesis and maintenance of depression.MethodIn this cross-sectional study, depressed patients was enrolled in the clinical psychology department of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital as the case group, while healthy individuals were recruited in the hospital and social meetings as the control group. Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD)-17, Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) and rumination thinking scale (RRS) were adopted as measurement tools, and working memory operation tasks were adopted to test each subject, so as to measure their cognitive operation ability.ResultA total of 78 depressed patients and 81 healthy individuals completed the study. The results showed that the rumination level of the case group was higher than that of the control group, and the difference was significant first; Second, in the āinconsistentā condition, the case group under different stimulus conditions when the response was significantly higher than the control group; Thirdly, the ācognitive operation consumptionā value of the case group was significantly higher than that of the control group under the three stimulus conditions, among which, the operational cost value of sadnessāneutral stimulus was significantly higher than that of the other two stimulus conditions.ConclusionPatients with depression had obvious difficulties in cognitive manipulation of information with different values in working memory, which reflected in the fact that it took them longer time to adjust the relationship between information and established new representations. Among them, patients with depression had a higher degree of cognitive manipulation of sad stimuli, indicating that their abnormal cognitive manipulation had certain emotion specificity. Finally, the difficulty of cognitive operation was closely related to the level of rumination
The influence of cognitive ability in Chinese reading comprehension: can working memory updating change Chinese primary school studentsā reading comprehension performance?
With the development of educational cognitive neuroscience, language instruction is no longer perceived as mechanical teaching and learning. Individual cognitive proficiency has been found to play a crucial role in language acquisition, particularly in the realm of reading comprehension. The primary objective of this study was to investigate two key aspects: firstly, to assess the predictive effects of the central executive (CE) on the Chinese reading comprehension scores of Chinese primary school students, and secondly, to explore the influence of CE training on the Chinese reading comprehension performance of Chinese primary school students. Chinese primary school students were recruited as participants. Experiment 1 used a Chinese N-back task, a Chinese Stroop task, and a number-pinyin conversion task to investigate the predictive effect of the CE components on Chinese reading comprehension. Experiment 2, based on the results of Experiment 1, used the Chinese character N-back training to explore the influence of updating training on Chinese reading comprehension. The findings from Experiment 1 underscored that CE had a predictive effect on Chinese reading comprehension scores. And updating had a prominent role in it. Experiment 2 revealed that the experimental group exhibited an enhancement in their updating performance following N-back training. Although the reading comprehension performance of the two groups after training did not produce significant differences in total scores, the experimental group showed maintained and higher microscopic reading comprehension scores than the control group in the more difficult post-test. In summary, this study yields two primary conclusions: (1) CE was able to predict Chinese reading comprehension scores. Updating has an important role in prediction. (2) Updating training enhances studentsā updating performance and positively influences studentsā Chinese microscopic reading comprehension performance
The functional decline of tomato plants infected by Candidatus Liberbacter solanacearum: an RNA-seq transcriptomic analysis
IntroductionCandidatus Liberibacter solanacearum (CLso) is a regulated plant pathogen in European and some Asian countries, associated with severe diseases in economically important Apiaceous and Solanaceous crops, including potato, tomato, and carrot. Eleven haplotypes of CLso have been identified based on the difference in rRNA and conserved genes and host and pathogenicity. Although it is pathogenic to a wide range of plants, the mechanisms of plant response and functional decline of host plants are not well defined. This study aims to describe the underlying mechanism of the functional decline of tomato plants infected by CLso by analyzing the transcriptomic response of tomato plants to CLso haplotypes A and B.MethodsNext-generation sequencing (NGS) data were generated from total RNA of tomato plants infected by CLso haplotypes A and B, and uninfected tomato plants, while qPCR analysis was used to validate the in-silico expression analysis. Gene Ontology and KEGG pathways were enriched using differentially expressed genes.ResultsPlants infected with CLso haplotype B saw 229 genes upregulated when compared to uninfected plants, while 1,135 were downregulated. Healthy tomato plants and plants infected by haplotype A had similar expression levels, which is consistent with the fact that CLso haplotype A does not show apparent symptoms in tomato plants. Photosynthesis and starch biosynthesis were impaired while starch amylolysis was promoted in plants infected by CLso haplotype B compared with uninfected plants. The changes in pathway gene expression suggest that carbohydrate consumption in infected plants was more extensive than accumulation. In addition, cell-wall-related genes, including steroid biosynthesis pathways, were downregulated in plants infected with CLso haplotype B suggesting a reduction in membrane fluidity, cell signaling, and defense against bacteria. In addition, genes in phenylpropanoid metabolism and DNA replication were generally suppressed by CLso infection, affecting plant growth and defense.DiscussionThis study provides insights into plantsā defense and functional decline due to pathogenic CLso using whole transcriptome sequencing and qPCR validation. Our results show how tomato plants react in metabolic pathways during the deterioration caused by pathogenic CLso. Understanding the underlying mechanisms can enhance disease control and create opportunities for breeding resistant or tolerant varieties
Generative Model for Models: Rapid DNN Customization for Diverse Tasks and Resource Constraints
Unlike cloud-based deep learning models that are often large and uniform,
edge-deployed models usually demand customization for domain-specific tasks and
resource-limited environments. Such customization processes can be costly and
time-consuming due to the diversity of edge scenarios and the training load for
each scenario. Although various approaches have been proposed for rapid
resource-oriented customization and task-oriented customization respectively,
achieving both of them at the same time is challenging. Drawing inspiration
from the generative AI and the modular composability of neural networks, we
introduce NN-Factory, an one-for-all framework to generate customized
lightweight models for diverse edge scenarios. The key idea is to use a
generative model to directly produce the customized models, instead of training
them. The main components of NN-Factory include a modular supernet with
pretrained modules that can be conditionally activated to accomplish different
tasks and a generative module assembler that manipulate the modules according
to task and sparsity requirements. Given an edge scenario, NN-Factory can
efficiently customize a compact model specialized in the edge task while
satisfying the edge resource constraints by searching for the optimal strategy
to assemble the modules. Based on experiments on image classification and
object detection tasks with different edge devices, NN-Factory is able to
generate high-quality task- and resource-specific models within few seconds,
faster than conventional model customization approaches by orders of magnitude
The relationship between moral judgment ability, parenting style, and perfectionism in obsessiveācompulsive disorder patients: A mediating analysis
IntroductionGuilt is an important part of obsessiveācompulsive disorder. The abnormal moral cognition of obsessiveācompulsive disorder patients may be closely related to their high level of guilt. The purpose of this study was to explore the development level of moral judgment in patients with obsessiveācompulsive disorder and the role of parenting style and perfectionism in moral judgment development.MethodA cross-sectional study was conducted in the clinical psychology department of a Class III hospital in Beijing. The patients with obsessiveācompulsive disorder were recruited, and the healthy control subjects were recruited at the same time. Questionnaires were used to collect data, including the Yale-Brown Compulsion Scale, the Moral Judgment Test, the Parenting Style Evaluation Scale, and the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale.ResultA total of 231 patients with obsessiveācompulsive disorder and 246 healthy controls were included. The results showed that, first, the obsessiveācompulsive group scored significantly lower on moral judgment than the healthy control group. Second, the tendency of non-adaptive perfectionism was significantly higher in the obsessiveācompulsive group than in the healthy control group. Third, parentsā excessive control, denial, punishment, and other parenting styles and non-adaptive perfectionism are higher than those of healthy people. Fourthly, the mother of obsessiveācompulsive disorder patients is overly interference and protective. Rejection, denial, punishment, harshness, and fatherās rejection and denial play a partial mediating role in moral judgment ability through the degree of non-adaptive perfectionism.ConclusionThe development level of moral judgment ability of patients with obsessiveācompulsive disorder was significantly lower than that of the normal group, and the level of non-adaptive perfectionism was significantly higher than that of the normal group. Parents of obsessiveācompulsive patients use more high-pressure control education. Parenting style partially affects the moral judgment of obsessiveācompulsive patients through the degree of non-adaptive perfectionism
Memristive Non-Volatile Memory Based on Graphene Materials
Resistive random access memory (RRAM), which is considered as one of the most promising next-generation non-volatile memory (NVM) devices and a representative of memristor technologies, demonstrated great potential in acting as an artificial synapse in the industry of neuromorphic systems and artificial intelligence (AI), due its advantages such as fast operation speed, low power consumption, and high device density. Graphene and related materials (GRMs), especially graphene oxide (GO), acting as active materials for RRAM devices, are considered as a promising alternative to other materials including metal oxides and perovskite materials. Herein, an overview of GRM-based RRAM devices is provided, with discussion about the properties of GRMs, main operation mechanisms for resistive switching (RS) behavior, figure of merit (FoM) summary, and prospect extension of GRM-based RRAM devices. With excellent physical and chemical advantages like intrinsic Youngās modulus (1.0 TPa), good tensile strength (130 GPa), excellent carrier mobility (2.0 Ć 105 cm2āVā1āsā1), and high thermal (5000 Wmā1āKā1) and superior electrical conductivity (1.0 Ć 106 Sāmā1), GRMs can act as electrodes and resistive switching media in RRAM devices. In addition, the GRM-based interface between electrode and dielectric can have an effect on atomic diffusion limitation in dielectric and surface effect suppression. Immense amounts of concrete research indicate that GRMs might play a significant role in promoting the large-scale commercialization possibility of RRAM devices

Food-burying behavior in red imported fire ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)
The food-burying behavior has been reported in many mammals and birds, but was rarely observed in invertebrates. The red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren, is an invasive pest in many areas of the world that usually performing food-burying during the foraging processes. However, the impacted factors and measureable patterns of this behavior is largely unknown. In the present study, food-burying vs food-transport behaviors of Solenopsis invicta were observed under laboratory and field conditions. When starved (no food was provided for 37 days) in the laboratory, food (sausage) was consumed by large numbers of ants, and few burying behaviors were observed. However, when food was provided until satiation of the colonies, food-transport was suppressed and significantly more soil particles were relocated on the food and graph paper square (where the food was placed) when compared with these colonies exposed to starved conditions. Videotapes showed that soil particles (1.47 Ā± 0.09 mm2) were preferentially placed adjacent to (in contact with) the food items at the beginning; and after the edges were covered, ants transported significantly smaller soil particles (1.13 Ā± 0.06 mm2) to cover the food. Meanwhile, larger particles (1.96 Ā± 0.08 mm2) were pulled/dragged around (but not in contact with) the food. Interestingly, only a small number of ants, mainly the small workers, were involved in food-burying, and the ants tended to repeatedly transport soil particles. A total of 12 patterns of particle transport were identified, and soil particles were most frequently picked from the foraging arena and subsequently placed adjacent to the food. In the field, almost all released food was actively transported by Solenopsis invicta workers, and no burying behavior was observed. Our results show that the food-burying behavior of Solenopsis invicta may be associated with the suppressed foraging activity, and the burying task may be carried out by certain groups of workers
